RIP Tampa Bay Mutiny

  • The Tampa Bay Rowdies were one of the most successful clubs in the old NASL in the 70s and 80s. So naturally, when MLS started, Tampa Bay seemed like a prime candidate for a team. However with the Mutiny, things didn't exactly work out.'
What happened and why did the Mutiny fail? This is that story.
*At 4:28 in the video, I stated that the Mutiny lost 10 players to the dispersal draft. This came from a quote from then president Nick Sakiewicz. Although, I cannot find what players were taken. I do know that three were taken in the expansion draft, Nelson Vargas, Cle Kooiman, and Scott Budnick.
    Source of quote: www.brotherlyg...
** On a Facebook post regarding this topic, a former intern, Glenn Maddock, shared the following info:
"You know we didn't know about the team name or branding, when we launched, that was sprung on us by Nike & MLS officials who did whatever Nike said in those days. Their idea was to appeal to kids into video games. It was a cyber mutant, like from a video game. Mutiny was a play on the Bucs name, but we nixed the mascots, because it was so stupid, and the staff almost mutinied when Nike showed us the new kits. Nobody in the local soccer community could understand why we weren't the Rowdies again. But MLS was scared of any links to the failed NASL, and wanted total fresh start. Proved big mistake, as we've seen now in Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Jose. Fans love legacy & history. Orlando learned from Mutiny mistakes, and did it right."

I was with the Mutiny as Max the Bat, the team Mascot, for the last 5 years of the teams life. The bat was the symbol for the team because the old Tampa Bay Stadium(the Old Sombrero) was infested with bats and they would fly over the field as the sun set. Very intimidating! We are talking thousands of bats(a protected species in Tampa!) I loved working for them and managing the mascot. Max is, and will always be close to my heart!

Oh..and we never "nixed the mascots" sorry Glenn. We tried to get rid of Max and transition into new mascot "Sidekick the Soccer Ball" But After the WWE like match between the two(a fight Max would never had lost), the fans went on an email rant complaining about the change. From that point we had 2 Mascots!! Played by myself and my business partner. After the Mutiny we pitched a mascot for the Tampa Yankees. "The Blue Bomber" which was retired a few years ago. Lasting over 10 years!

I had only heard the Rowdies come back to existence because Joe Cole played a season there. If they can get a great fan base in the USL, that will speak on how Tampa Soccer fans embrace the Rowdies.

I’m glad the rowdies currently exist and have some sense of security but I’d be lying if I wouldn’t be happy if the rowdies ended up in the mls, I can get past the downfalls of MLS if it meant the rowdies has a sense of security and would be around for several generations

If MLS ever returns to Tampa Bay, it's gotta be the Rowdies that would represent the region. They got history, they got fans, and they have some of the most iconic jerseys in American soccer history. C'mon Garber, it's a slam dunk!

The name Tampa Bay Mutiny is pretty cool. They should’ve gone with a pirate theme to match the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and because pirates often committed mutiny.

I have that jersey if you're serious about wanting it. If a Rowdies fan I have the hats from the 2012 season made by Admiral (seaon they won the championship and earned their second star).

So stupid they didn't give the MLS franchise to the rowdies that had an owner and them they end the mutiny because the franchise didn't have an owner. Stupid.
