As a wedding shop owner and designer who's been in business for 30 plus years, I need to say a few words. The reason DB gives a strapless bra to try on their dresses, is because their dresses are poorly made, inexpensive and come without bra or support! The boutique dresses are WELL MADE, designer dresses that come with bra/great support and petticoat already in them. The David's bridals are affordable for a reason...they're made of "shower curtains". You pay big time when alterations and extras come along. They even charge you for the garment bags! It's fine if that's what you choose to do. In my opinion, choose small businesses.
Totally agree. Ever wonder why Jackie Kennedy's dresses never showed a bra strap? Because the bra and linings were made into the dresses! Most women today have never worn a well constructed, well fitted dress. They don't have to be couture, but well made gowns have many couture type features. I do realize that not everyone can afford a boutique dress and there is a place for "the Wal-mart of bridal," but if you want quality fabric, fit, trims, etc. you won't find them in a chain. To make matters worse, what they pay their fitting personnel is shameful compared to what they charge for alterations!
As someone who 1. Is also engaged! 😊 and 2. Is a stylist as David’s bridal (obviously a different store) I found this to be fascinating. We have changed a lot of our policies because of COVID (people are only allowed to bring 2 guests now, which is great with the advice you gave) and our appointments are only 60 minutes now but the time slots are still 90 minutes. In my opinion this makes the stylists much less rushed because before we had appointments butting up right next to each other (for example I could have a 12, 1:30, and 3 appointment all 90 minutes, which is why it is difficult for us to not feel rushed). Also, I believe the reason they reach out so much for confirmation for appointments is because our stylists make commission based on how much we sell per hour on average throughout the pay period rather than a percentage of the sale. So basically if someone doesn’t show up for their appointment, it really hard for us to make commission because we don’t have anyone to sell to for a full 90 minutes or more. However, I didn’t realize that they did that many confirmations and I completely get how that would be annoying. Hopefully this puts your experience into a little bit more perspective. I agree that the chain is super convenient but the structure of it can make it feel impersonal. I personally try my best to make it the next experience possible for my brides given the structure, but I know people’s experiences can very widely based of the stylist that they have. Sorry for the long comment, I just thought you might find some of the behind the scenes facts interesting 😊 I’m so glad you found your dress, congratulations!
Also I promise I’m not an employee that creeps on David’s bridal content 😂. I’ve been watching your videos (and loving them) for years and am normally a lurker but felt like I had to comment on this one. Much love ❤️
Haha thanks, Skylar! It was busy and I assumed she had an appointment right behind me. And I assumed they probably had to reach out a certain number of times and since my appointment was in 7 days, they probably had to squeeze them in. It was still a great experience and I’m lucky to have found my dream dress at such a reasonable price at David’s! ♥️♥️
*Too Much Tash* - "I knew that I wanted a sleeve, like some type of sleeve element". *Safiya Nygaard* - "That's a lot of good sleeve... I'm all about the sleeves... Look at that sleeve Ty!" *Bindi Irwin* - "I like the sleeves". If you say the word sleeve enough - many times in a row - it almost loses all meaning lol. Oh my gosh "inner side boob" ha, ha, ha I'm howling. 😂🤣 I like that both Safiya Nygaard and Samantha Ravndahl have put up videos talking about their experiences shopping for dresses, putting up pictures/videos, and what was their thought process, for anyone who wants even more content about weddings and sleeves. Fantastic video Tash!! It's so lovely to see you try on all those gowns. I thought you looked beautiful in all of them. I totally agree that sometimes the cut of the dress from the front wasn't suited to your height, but I thought nearly all of them looked stunning from the back! It's a great example to show that different garments look different from various angles. Sometimes it can take a while to find something perfect that's great from all angles and photographs well. 📸 A friend of mine (whom studied fashion design) also told me once that it can be hard to find good quality lace in commercial wedding dresses that don't look like appliques (usually they're sourced in bulk from manufacturers). An alternative that was suggested to me was, buy the dress that you really love, and then source lace independently that can be altered and sewn onto the dress later. I suppose that's the compromise of not paying for a full custom gown from the jump. I can't wait to see the photos from the main event when it happens! Maybe a video on what makeup you plan on wearing + the bridal party? 🙂
I bought my dress from David’s Bridal, and I had a really great experience! I love the Galina line from them! I loved being able to see everything online beforehand. I actually chose my dress online as my first choice. It was the first dress I tried on, and it’s the dress I bought! I still tried on probably 4 other gowns to appease my family, but I did completely love the dress I ended up buying.
As you mentioned at the end, my mother was one of those people who made it known that she didn’t like my dress. I was paying for my own dress, so her opinion didn’t really sway me, but it was very discouraging to know she felt that way. Whenever we went to pick up my dress and tried on the dress in the proper size and color, she did end up crying and loving it, but at first it was a pretty big bummer.
The one you liked the best at the boutique was my favorite on you! When I shopped for my wedding dress, I went to a small boutique and David’s bridal and I loved the boutique experience so much better and ended up getting my dress from there
I got my dress at David’s bridal. I went by myself twice at one store (the appointments were an hour and a half for me as well) to find out what silhouette I liked. The third I went I with my mother and 2 sisters. I found that this helped when i found my dress to say to them this is what I want. I also found that the staff kind of just wanted you to buy. I waited for a sale and saved $500 on my dress! So I would recommend waiting for anyone who will be buying from Davids bridal. It will go on sale!
I loved this video and I am so very happy for you! You look beautiful in all of them and it's just so nice to just see you the gushing. Much happiness to you and your husband♥️🌻🌻🌻
I think you looked beautiful in all of the dresses, Tash. The last one from the boutique was my fave. I can't wait to see the one you chose! Stay safe! TFS! ~ Nona
Your experience was mine too. The boutique was more personal, I got to look and see what they had but the lady was still very attentive to me. The perfect balance of letting me do my own thing and helping me find my dress. David's bridal was similar to your experience too. More "business like" but still about you. I didn't purchase my dress there, but I could see it being "you found your dress, great, let's get you wrapped up and on to the next appointment." I agree about not taking many people. I only took my mom and it was great. But I'm also the type of person, if I find the perfect dress and everyone else hates it, I really don't care because I love the dress. Everyone is different, though, so having everyone agree is important to others. Love this video--a nice change.
When I was younger (like pre-teen), I thought getting married was a given. Now it's not something I plan to do (although I would still like to). It was nice to experience this vicariously through you! I liked pieces of lots of the dresses, but I understand why you didn't pick them. I'm sure the one you bought is lovely!
I think the 4th dress was my favourite on you! I also liked the one James picked 🙂 I can't give any tips. The only thing I can say is that looking back after 6 years I still love my dress, but if the wedding would be now, I would probably choose something else. BUT!!! I still love my dress 🙂
David's Bridal has great tailoring. I got another dress from there because the boutique shop I got my dress from had nightmare tailoring and ruined my dress 💜
Carlisle’s is great - I had a very good experience with them and ended up getting my bridesmaids’ dresses from there. I got my dress from the white orchid - I definitely recommend them - they pulled a lot of beautiful dresses based on my preferences.
My daughter bought her dress and her bridesmaids dresses at David's, as well. Overall the experience was fine, but they were very busy and it did feel a bit rushed. Her dress is beautiful (she married in 2012) and it fit her perfectly. She ordered her undergarments there, too, so that was convenient. I'm glad you found your dream dress!! Blessings!!!!!
Your top is lovely 😍 Thank you for the tips!! I think I might end up making my dress (we've been engaged for 10 years, lots of time to plan), but if I end-up buying this is really great info! I really like the top of the last dress, a bit more whimsical than the rest, but the dress you liked best from the boutique is my favorite too.
Thanks for sharing! I just bought my wedding dress last week! Wearing a mask wasn't how I envisioned trying on dresses (before the pandemic). Each place was different about health restriction policies, but if anyone goes to try on dresses soon be prepared for the sales associate to not be allowed to help you get into the dress. They still helped clamp the dress after I was already in it though. And then they would step 6 feet back so I could take off my mask for a picture.
I got married 8 months ago and the first dress you tried on at David’s bridal was my dress! (I have a long torso though) . I used their alterations dept and had no issues. (Just know that wedding dress alterations are so expensive!) the dresses look beautiful on you! 💖💖💖 can’t wait to see the dress you chose!
I liked 2 dresses from the boutique most: the one you almost considered and the one with cap-sleeves that you said had heavy beading I think around 6:40 I don't know if these styles are for me, but I thought they looked so lovely on you. It makes me curious to see what thee dress looks like!
Just started looking for wedding dress and found to video! I tried on dresses at David’s bridal too and the experience was just ok 🙃 but congratulations!! 🎉🎊🍾
I love almost all of the dresses you pick at David's Bridal, that style and line is very flattering for your body type. And you've got lovely hair 💖, I'm very curious what hairstyle you choose for the wedding day.
I got my dress from David's Bridal as well. I ended up ordering online since what I wanted wasn't available in store.- so that was a gamble. The in-store experience was just OK for me as well and it did seem like the stylist was trying to get my into more expensive dresses. I mean, it's fun to try on dresses, but I felt kind of meh about the experience since all the dresses just didn't fit (i know. sample sizes) but I felt like a kid playing dress up verses feeling like an adult woman getting married. What i ended up with was perfect though - we eloped and I still had a pretty dress (technically 2 piece) that gave me all the bridal vibes. Can't wait to see photos from your wedding to see the final dress!
Well you’re probably already done shopping, but I think the dress at 7:00 was gorgeous on you. The one that you said you almost got was my 2nd favorite. Long sleeve wedding dresses are the best!
You looked so beautiful in all of them! The cap sleeve one looked awesome! Gave me that vintage vibe. You're so beautiful and any dress you picked I'm positive is going to be stunning!!! Thank you for sharing ❤️...side note... I was supposed to be in a wedding on June 6 but because of covid it was cancelled....I too purchased from Davids bridal and I had so many calls and confirmation texts for my appointment 🤣🤣🙄. And I couldn't return my dress 😔 because of covid cancellation even though it was new and untouched 🤷.
When my sister was shopping for dresses she only took my mom. She had borrowed a dress for her own wedding and my sister wanted to give her the "shopping experience". My sister picked the first dress she tried on so it wasn't much of an experience. lol!
I got my dress from David's Bridal. An absolutely beautiful Oleg Cassini trumpet gown. Unfortunately I had to swap my dress because my husband seen it lol. However they didnt give me any hassle about swapping my dress. Everytime I've gone there was a great experience. Oh not to mention my dress was originally 1500 bucks. I got it for 5
