I'm new to your site and your music. I really enjoy your playing and your instruction. Somehow I first caught your intro to Spike Driver's Blues and was hooked. Then you put up a catchy ragtime piece. I'm eager to learn from you.
I couldn't do the thumb g chord as i play on a classical guitar and it dont work... but I found a really cool alternate fingering where you do barre chord G but you lift the barre but keep your fingertips down to to hit the open 1st
I have played this song for quite a few years now and picked up a couple of good nuances here. It was quite helpful. One thing you do not cover is that Merle. like Doc, played with thumb and one finger only instead of two fingers. It makes a difference in getting the authentic Travis sound, especially on the fast rolls over the D7 and G later in the song. It also affects the bounce and syncopation on the parts you covered.
Freight Train and the Cannon Ball Rag were the first fingerprinting songs I learned a long time ago. Never did get "the run" exactly right on Black Mountain Rag.
John, I just discovered your channel and am impressed with your teaching approach. I am a pretty good guitarist but new to "fingerstyle blues". If I want to learn more and also support your work, how is the best way (patreon, Truefire?) Is there a way to find out what lessons (and songs) are included in the BGI Membership? Is the membership good for "acoustic guitar blues beginners"? Thanks, John Gig Harbor, WA
Hey John, the answer to your question at the end of the lesson is “yes” I would be very interested to see your practice methods on this one and your process of getting it up to speed. As always, wishing you a great week!
@@BluesGuitarInstitute - You are welcome! Your channel is one of a small handful that I am really rooting for to reach ever increasing audiences!! I appreciate all you do!
you probably dont care but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all the latest series on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my brother for the last months xD
I also like the medium gauge much more. I'm really glad about the black mountain picks. They are the first picks I feel like in home with as an ex-classical guitarist. Thanks for introducing them to me John.
Thanks for the comment. I haven't used that one but have used some other strap designs that I just couldn't get on with. Glad you dig them though. Finding your go-to pick can take forever! It did for me.
Thank you for the lesson
Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
Thanks so much for this John. It's a finger-buster (for me)!

Pretty cool. Thanks John 🎶🎶🎶
Glad you enjoyed it! Have a great day (evening) Nicole!

I may have covered that in the first lesson on Cannonball Rag. Not sure though so thanks for commenting here. What a great picker.

Wow, nice video. Would love to see your practice to get this tune down.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks, Scott. I appreciate it and thanks for the vote for a practice video on this. Cheers!

Such great songs.
Great video. Would love to see a tutorial on the rest of the song
Thanks, Richard. I did a part two on the channel that covers another section. ruclips.net/video/yn0wk3l7C4w/видео.html
Thank you!
Thank you for watching! Play on!

@Lance Adam yup, have been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself :D
I just got the medium gage. I like it much better. It's easier to do powerchord shuffles with a little give
That's cool. I've been into heavier gauges lately myself but I'm really glad we have the option now.

Love the channel, but Black Mountain picks pale in comparison to Justin Johnson’s thumb picks.
