Quality by Design and Quality Management

  • Quality by Design is all about making quality a proactive process, rather than a reactive one. In this video, best-selling author Craig Gygi describes how Quality by Design doesn’t just create a better product, but also saves a company money.
Traditionally, companies have embraced quality by embracing compliance. If the product or part falls within acceptable specifications, it’s a “quality” product. Anything outside of that range will cost the company; anything within it won’t. Gygi explains how these concepts are false and wind up costing companies in the long run.
The truth is, there’s a target companies should be trying to hit within the specifications. This target can be based off of consumer preferences or an amount of an ingredient or part that is most efficacious. Anytime a company deviates from that target, it costs them - whether they’re still within specifications or not.
Inserting quality into the design process early in product development requires a digital system that lets your designers collaborate in real time and make necessary changes while the cost is minimal.

I like the illustration on rules of 10s especially the curve of "Ability of implement" and the definition of Quality is on target w/minimal variation.

Thank you! You have very "easy to remember" style of presentation. I like, that you draw everything by hand and, at the same time, you have background text for better understanding and clear graphs as take-away massages.

Great presentation explainer. We are constantly conditioning customers to understand the level of work involved in pre project design and engineering and pre-budget estimate or quoting. This will be so valuable to our business in terms of disqualifying tyre kickers and focusing on the customers which understand and agree to remunerate us for our time and expertise.

Dear Sir - Very nice explaination of Cost of Quality through the 2D graph. Hit target with minimal variation is quality, that's true. But do you think, the Cost of production will follow the inverse pattern graph to meet this quality objective. Means closure to target will have more cost of prodution. How do you suggest to balance between Cost of Quality and cost of Production?
