I'm seeing these spins-freely tests frequently on RUclips, as engineer. Amount and lubricant will make a difference, and the number of revolutions really doesn't say much. Do remember though when servicing: Some greases don't mix, i. e. they become a mess. Cartridge bearings from SKF, NTN, come with PH greases, and more often than not you'll get said mess around their seals, due to a mix with sheyster "marine grease." (I'm aware of the second aspect, comfort and predictable position.)
Lets add in: Ceramicspeed and BBinfinite will agree on this: just cause it spins better, does NOT mean it rolls or works better. For example, I have a Wheels Manufacturing BB on one bike, and on a second bike of the same model I have a Ceramicspeed coated BB. They both feel remarkable, but I think the Ceramicspeed has a better seal and just hasnt needed as much service. Little differences.
I’ve been using poor man’s X-Track pedals (the base model) and I’m amazed how big the improvement in feel there is over poor man’s Shimano M520. The support is amazing. Plus they’re red and look killer on my white Exploro.
Do you have this version that is all red from X-Track? I have Exploro Racemax white/red frame and wonder upon pedals and feel like the red of basic X-Tracks would not match the red paint of RaceMax so thinking X-Track Race or Race Carbon which has a red cover on the spindle.
@@pawelpankiewicz9458 yes, I have the basic X-Track pedals, they're all red. I haven't seen the white-red RaceMax in person but from the photos (the best color scheme on the Racemax in my opinion) it seems the red on it is just slightly darker than the pedals. They are roughy the same shade as the fulcrum logo on the wheels but more shiny. I think higher end X-Track are a matter of weight and additional bling factor. I'm perfectly happy with the base model.
@@rabomarc thanks a lot. The connection to the color on Fulcrum logo is also very helpful. If it's similar it's actually not as different as I thought. But web pictures differ so much depending on shop and actually screen you're looking at it from. Surely these must fit perfectly white exploro frame. Indeed RaceMax is tad darker. I think I'm going for the Race or Race carbon version and be satisfied with red cover of the spindle. If stores would be widely opened I'd for sure check the base red version in the store, but these pedals also not that easy to come by aside of web. One again thanks ☺️
Just need to give a shout out to this review - have converted all my SPD MTB gravel pedals to Looks and couldn't be happier (ESPECIALLY WITH THE CREAK GONE!).
This is actually quite interesting. The only reason why I haven't changed from Shimano XTR pedals (the M9100 in my case) to other brands is because of the Shimano cleats compatibility with those other brands. Shimano with Shimano just work beautifully and I haven't had any problems with my M520 and 2 pairs of SPD-M9100s. These LOOK do look promising and I might try if I had spare cash to burn.
I just got into cycling: learning about pedals and shoes has to be the least amount of fun I've ever had in my entire life when picking up a new sport. Thanks for the awesome and clear video, it really put me at ease about getting these.
Cheers Danny very nice of you to say! My first pair of clippy cycling shoes and pedals were MTB and I used them on a road bike. A lot of people will insist that road stuff is better, and it is in a few ways, but for a learner MTB pedals and shoes has a lot of benefits. Double sided pedals that are easy to clip in and out of will let you learn how it all works then maybe move to road stuff later. Or not. Whatever works for you!
I've got the non carbon version - i think it's called Race. My only disappointment with them is the engagement - when u try to clip in - it's a touch wonky - doesn't go in as efficiently or smoothly or surely as the shimanos - even the cheap shimanos have a consistency about them. ONce or twice i have to be conscious to reallly dab the shoe in before they engage - and the click is much softer than the shimanos. Got them for the 'wider' platform....honestly i can't really say i can feel a lot of difference in the supposedly wider platform - maybe i'm using much stiffer shoes and a softer shoe would reveal more.
I have road bike ( Roubaix ), but like SPD Clipless so i can wear mountain bike shoes ( Shimano Recon 3 ) so I can walk when necessary and not have cleat interfere... I purchased XT-Track En-Rage Plus for the extra wide platform support... However, I'm wondering if i should get Shimano PD-M8120 instead... Would appreciate your feedback... I would have gotten PD-M8120s but Pandemic have made them bit uneasy to obtain...
i have opposite experience of x-track en-rage after shimano m520 - look has noticably more confident clipping-in and better support. For me they just better than shimano for similar price, except i prefer shimao ball bearing rather than sealed bearings.
Shimano pedals, whether road or off-road, have always given me hot spots. I have always enjoyed Look or Look compatible road pedals for platform comfort and degree of float. Tried the x-track race carbon and loved them. I found the enduro version x-track en-rage for a killer price and love them even more. Don't care about added grams of weight for the cage surround. An added bonus is they come in two platform widths. Thumbs up to Look for their x-track line of pedals - happy feet at last!
Very satisfying! I've had the horror of bad hot spots with a Shimano shoe and pedal pairing a couple of years ago. Glad you've found your solution that works!
Ive ridden the Lokk Xtrac Carbon Race pedals for almost 2 years now. I have to say I disagree with you when you say you had a harder time clipping in. I had a far FAR easier time clipping in. At roughly what feels like the same tension, my foot just glides into the pedal so much better with more precision and accurracy. Thats not to say you are wrong, just that my experience makes me believe maybe you should do more testing on said subject cause my experience was vastly different. I also have several sets of XTR pedals of the last 2 generations. And the Looks are far far superior in my mind. Do a comparison of the Xtrac Vs the Time Atac XC 8.
I had them. After not even 1.000km they started creaking. Did not bother with the warranty. Went back to Shimano XTR, after 5000km still running smooth.
Yea my XTR pedals creak, well more of a squeak, sounds like the rubber on the pedal but through some testing I have found it is actually the edges of the cleat where it sits flat on the pedal body and there is only about 1mm of contact. Ive tried grease and oil but only lasts 20km, ive just been rubbing my foot in dirt and it stops it. Its only pedaling out of the saddle though, and it takes about 10km to start doing it so its been really hard to figure out if its the pedal, cleat or shoe. Maybe I should just try these... This noise is so loud and embarrassing, but ive just put up with it for 2 years because sometimes it just doesnt do it.
Oh man, that sounds a fair bit like the creak I had. I reckon it's worth giving some LOOKs a shot. It's a bargain price if they stop annoying noises from ruining your rides!
@@JustRideAdelaide Unfortunately I just found the Ti version and I happen to love gold... but dont like spending extra $100 for -80g hahaha. But seriously though ive been wanting to try new pedals for a long time and you might have got LOOK a sale :) Cheers for the video, I'll comment in future if I ended up getting pedals and if it fixed problem.

Hmm, I did the scientific spin test on my Shimano XT, m530, and a set of m520, and non spun except the 520...I do like the Looks tho and most of the shops around here have them... Is there any difference between the race models except for different materials? I was thinking about picking up the composition bodied set as I don’t like the red end cap of the carbon model and its about 2/3 of the price.
Always a pleasure Alan! So, when I rode the Mawson Trail last year one of the other guys had Eggbeaters. The pedals literally disintegrated 50 metres from the end of a 1,000 km ride. It was hilarious! He was so lucky that didn't happen earlier.
That has been my go to gravel bike pedal for many years, I just had an issue recently that the tension on my left pedal is kinda failing. I put it on 1 (easy to clip out) but it's still having a hard time clipping out. Any idea sir. I will keep buying Look Xtrac and for value it's amazing.
i'm going to switch to spd from spd-sl pedals on my gravel bike (only bike). Do you recommend these over the xt/xtr? I'll be using them on the road too, so the bigger contact is the thing pulling me towards them
Ride Adelaide: I take it you don't know that Shimano makes wide platform XTR and XT pedals as well (PD-M9020 and PD-M9120). Personally, I use clips on my road bike and flats on my MTB.
@@JustRideAdelaide Well, I guess if you're going to compare apples to oranges and you prefer oranges then that's great. My point was you're comparing a small platform to a large platform and 90% of the video was how much you liked the large platform.

Got a pair last year as I was suffering from painful feet, these pedals have alleviated that I presume because of the wider platform. Great Pedals.
Same here shimano killed my feet on a long mtb rides then switched over Look and im pain free .
I wasn't going to watch this video but I'm glad that I did. I'll try these pedals they LOOK promising.
Just ordered these yesterday. Can't wait to try! LIKED! ;)
The wider platform is definitely more confidence inspiring when taking my gravel bike off road

Looking for new pedals after prove crank brothers last just months (candy 1 and 7)
shimano cleats works with Look x-track pedals?
3 months too late, but yes they do
how do i remove the outer plastic cover to service the bearings? looks like it requires a special tool but LOOK is not selling it!!!
The guy I got to do the teardown used needle nose pliers. You only insert it into 2 of the holes but it gets the job done.
has anybody tried using these pedals for the favero assioma hack?
Thank you for your rewiew
You're welcome 😁
Could these be a worthy 2-bolt replacement for otherwise dedicated road riders?
I'd say they'll feel better than a Shimano 520/XT/XTR design if you're coming from the road.

Yep, Shimano cleats work perfectly 👌
