Repotting Orchids into Lava Rock | Angraecum Didieri

- Hi all, in today’s video I’ll be repotting my Angrecum Didieri into Lava Rock. Lava rock has plenty of air yet holds good moisture - It’s a great environment for orchid roots that require more air. It also doesn’t break down, so this orchid can remain in this set up for several years.
IG @nicoledeannaorchids
Growing Conditions & Climate:
Almost all orchids grown indoors
Eastern Exposures (4-5 hours direct early morning sun) & LED Grow Lights
Most orchids grow under the lights
Only cool growers & orchids in bloom grow under my Eastern facing windows
Grow space doesn’t get any additional sunlight other than the LED’s
Zone 7a - Humid Subtropical

Thank you :)
Great repot . Love it 🤗
i have Angraecum leonis on my wish list, thank you for this!
A really cute orchid. I’m interested to see how it does in lava rock. Nice orchid repot. 🤗👏🌺
Thanks Shirley! I'll keep you updated :)
Super cute! Wish mine would bloom, excited to see how it does in lava rock!
Hopefully it'll bloom for you this spring
Cleaning the dead roots my favorite part, where did you get the white pots? I like them a lot.
On Amazon, I have them linked in the description. Thanks for watching!
Good morning Nicole, very interesting video about potting an orchid in 100% lava rock and nothing else. Also using a basket for maximum aeration. Are there many orchids (vandas of course) who appreciate being potted that way ? I am finding that tolumnias grow well in stones the size of cherries and smaller, in clay pots. I also find that potted that way, tolumnias need to be watered every second day. Nicole I am looking for one of your videos about watering and most of all about the fertilizers that you use, could not find one with a title with that subject. In my appartement in Ottawa I have almost the same growing conditions as you have.
Hey Andre! You're not the first to ask for a video on fertilizing! I'll make an updated video on the topic when I return from my trip. I did one a long time ago, but it needs updating. I don't use lavarock a lot, but I have a friend who grows Dendrobiums and cattleyas with 100% lavarock with success and it works well for her. The air gaps are plentiful and it holds some water. Thanks as always for watching and stay tuned for a fertilizing video in the next month 👍
Where do you buy your lava rock? I've looked at a few gardne centers and online and haven't found the size you have in small quantities. Thanks!
I actually got it on Amazon, but have seen it at Home Depot! Usually they carry it in the spring.
How is it going 2 years later? Why lava rock instead of leca? Larger chunks?
Ah man, this one died on me, I neglected my collection summer that year due to some bad personal issues. As for leca vs. lavarock, I think either can be used, lavarock for sure has big chunks but i feel can hold on to more water because of the grooves if you're doing a traditional set up. Thanks for watching!
I have repotted some but too many to go… 😣
Best of luck! It's a struggle. I'm glad I finished mostly.
Is it a cattalaya or vanda
Neither, It's an angrecum. An African orchid of a different genus. Nice fragrance!
So you reached 100. How many past 100 are you going to go?
I don't have many more left maybe a dozen? Many can stay in their pots from last year, and the ones that really need to be repotted are some of the more annoying ones like my sharry babies which are over due which I know will have annoying roots lol. Some of the others are in bloom right now, like maxillaria Tenufolia and I'm waiting for them to fade.
@@NicoleDeanna if you're bored, you can come do the rest of mine that need to be done. 🤣 I just got the kiwi bark from Fred (PRICEY!!) to try. Sadly, they have to wait until the kitchen remodel is done.
@@michaelmccarthy4077 then she can come to my place and repot while waiting for your remodel. 🤣
@@michaelmccarthy4077 HAHAHA! If I lived nearby I'd do a repotting party haha. I hope the bark works out well and is long lasting! Hopefully you can get away with keeping a few of them in the bark for 2-3 years before having to disturb them again. Hope the rest of the remodel is smooth.
@@orchidsbythelake LOL!
Where to buy one
Got mine at Gold Country Orchids:)
