4 years late to the party but I did some research on this game and found it’s part of the SuperLite series in Japan, basically another budget line like the Simple series. Midas published a lot of these games in the rest of the world but the thing is with the SuperLite series is they were more often than not just re-releases of other games (Tetris, Cotton, etc) but the games they actually did make and were original were often VERY simple games. Crosswords, Mahjong, that sort of stuff. This is part of them. It’s literally simple racing. As basic as humanly possible.
I dunno Jak, that guy at 8:33 looks like you after playing too much Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly! That game can do crazy things to a person! XD Great review as always Jak.
I think that Asian lady in the intro cinematic is supposed to be a riff on that one model who was kinda the mascot for Ridge Racer for several games. The hair is practically identical. I also find it hilarious that the character portraits are a mix of American indie comic rejects, and anime-esque rejects that look like bad Yu Yu Hakusho characters, if I'm citing a specific anime.
When I was younger, I used to love car racing games, like need for speed and gran turismo. I still do. If I played this back then, I would stop very quickly, snap the disk, and put in need for speed high stakes.
Got the new car as a kid but have never had the patience to replay to see if there is more. Also I had 1 playthrough where one of the shops was busy the entire way, preventing me from ever using it. Also if you manage to turn yourself around so you are going the wrong direction the game calls you an idiot.
Wow never heard f this game but then again, never heard of Midas in general like I mentioned in your last video but wow this game... I can see why it was disappointing to you, I'd feel the same way. I had a similar experience when I was a kid with a racing game on the ps1 as well. ATV Racers, when I booted the game up I got stuck on the first race, and the controls are extremely stiff. it's not as hard now but it's super annoying to try and beat.

Just thought about it, there's so many racing games that have tracks that last about 3 minutes, effectively meaning those single tracks offer more gameplay than Dragstars. I feel bad for you and the other misfortunate kids that had to play that.
Have you played Speed Freaks on the PS1? Very underrated game and racer. Be interesting to know your thoughts on speed freaks in the future if you get a chance.
Drag racing has to be the worst thing to make a video game out of because it's just PURELY down to the performance of the car with almost no input from the player unless both cars are manual. Clealy they were just looking for the easiest thing possible to make.

This was one of only TWO games published by MiDAS Games that I used to have (the other one being Dynasty Warriors 2, which I still love to this day), and believe me... after two weeks of being stuck on the very first stage, I got so fed up to the point that I took the disc out of my PS2 and snapped it in half.
At least the opening isn't as bad as the V8 Supercars one where a kid attends a race and sees his older brother crash AND FUCKING EXPLODE AND DIES. The weirder thing is that the opening is the backstory for the career mode, cause apparently seeing someone you love explode inspires to follow in their footsteps.
i noticed that they used models of actual cars, like the Chevrolet Camaro Z28, the El Camino SS, and the C3 Corvette. and I don't think they credited the manufacturer(s) at all!
Someone sped run Enter the Dragonfly in 1:09 so ETD is probably less, but that doesn't excuse the game for it's short time. It's not a Square Eyed Jak review without referencing Enter the Dragonfly.
Well they didn't really make it clear but they specifically used the word Dragster for a reason. You're just Drag Racing, which is just straight line racing usually for about a quarter mile I believe. They tried to give you drag racing with the aesthetic of street racing. Weird game.

fuck i had this game, but it was called something else. i had a multi disc with a fuck ton of midas games stuff on it, and i loved it as a kid because i love anime, fuck this game was shit and i never did any good at it, but it still gives me a warm feeling of nostalgia whenever i see it, even tho that feeling is undeserved.
