I've realized from your videos that the entirety of my dislike for modern Barbie is her face. I wish they'd bring back the 90s face because it was so cute.
I'm personally nostalgic for the early 2000's face design, as that's what I grew up with. I agree that the current face mold is pretty unappealing. That combined with the uninteresting playline fashions is why I don't have any interest in collecting any Barbie dolls from this era.
I was thinking while editing this that the 90s doll faces did such a good job of having Barbie look youthful and glamorous, and the 2000s do a good job of looking more mature and glamorous. The 2020s... neither.

I think it's the eyebrows for me, I'm not sure what they did to Barbara but her eyebrows just feel disproportional now? The last time I saw a Barbie at a shop I actually thought it was a knock off at first

Ahaha I love that the Barbie who blows up balloons is the first to go in carrot cake 😂 I have her new in box bc a relative gave her to my sister for her birthday the year she came out, and my sister doesn't like dolls so she gave her to me. She's still in box as of right now, but one day I will take her out and mess with her goofy, ridiculous balloon blowing mechanic. I'm kinda surprised that still up to 2016 the boxes were saying 'For a special birthday girl'. I dunno. I thought they might have stopped doing that sooner? Unless the birthday wishes are for Barbie, and not the person getting her as a gift. I'm definitely overthinking it. 😛

My immediate thoughts on seeing the 2004 Birthday Wishes Barbie (at 12:04) was "If Gaz from Invader Zim had to wear a formal dress, this is what she'd wear". It's very 2000's era goth to me - it's not just the dark purple color, but also the arm bands and the dark lipstick that are really giving me that impression. I don't think it's very birthday, but I do like it for how much it stands out compared to everything else.
There she is! I recognize the 1990 "Happy Birthday Barbie" as the one of the only major dolls I begged for for some time and finally got. Her pink princess dress was the star of the show on every Barbie I owned afterward. The puff-sleeve bodice is actually separate from the two-layered skirt, which also made for more flexible play. Her hair had some strands of micro holographic tinsel ribbon in it as well. I played this doll absolutely into the ground before she reached a yard sale, so it's so interesting to see her untouched, as I did once in the store. This strange feeling of connection is what niche internet stuff is for.
Omg, I just get flashbacks to when my childhood crush got me the pink 2011 birthday Barbie!! It came with a hot pink crown and I would wear it constantly to show my ~LoVe~ for him (even tho we literally only saw each other like once a year). I still have it in my jewelry bin (I think the Barbie is in storage). Tho my love of pink has stayed strong, my love of boys has disappeared-

A year before I was born and I admit I like it better than the one for my year- but I do find the early 90s bdays nostalgic. really enjoyed this & seeing how the designs changed from year to year. I think my favorite has to be the 2003 bday wishes one! Like you said, I think the dress is quite elegant and the simplicity of the design in some ways really stands out

2013's Birthday Wishes stands out for having a very 1950's prom feel. They've also given her a bubble effect in her poufy skirt, so it subtle but smart - not a recycling of the past. The use of a very muted pink may also be a nod to millennial pink.

I saw the 1995 birthday barbie in an antique store recently and she blew me away. I'm a sucker for color and the pink, yellow, and blue combo along with the iridescent cellophane is so pretty. and the sleeves are so big and silly and amazing
