Why Are Alaskan Kodiak Bears Wandering in Florida?

  • Authorities are trying to figure out how two Alaskan bears ended up in Florida. A man called for help after he spotted two small cubs. He recognized they weren’t the black bears that are common in northwest Florida. The cubs are Kodiak bears, a unique subspecies of the brown or grizzly bear, which are native to Alaska. Alaska Department of Fish and Game says Kodiak bears can stand at over 10 feet tall when on their hind legs and weigh more than 1,500 pounds.

    I wouldn't have been worried about cubs--they're usually pretty curious and not aggressive. They can afford to be because they have *momma bears* to take care of them. I would have been too busy looking around into the dark trying to figure out if, where and when Momma Bear was going to show up and take offence.

      Yeah I'd have been freaking out that mama was around.
      But since they're not native it's fairly obvious that there's no mama around.
      Still I'd probably be way too worried about a potential mama or human that illegally owned them coming out of the woods.
      So while my love of animals means I would have called for help. My common sense says stay in the vehicle, call 911 & be ready to floor it out of there.
      But in saying that my fibromyalgia is laughing because I tend to hurt too much to be out there. Especially at night.

    • @GrainneDhub-ll6vw
      @GrainneDhub-ll6vw 4 месяца назад +3

      @@Nirrrina I think your common sense is spot on. If you might be dealing with a momma bear or a human who is not too tightly wrapped, always have your escape route planned and within your ability to execute at a split second's notice. Don't feed the bears yourself, it gives them a taste for more!
      Clearly not a native species but since those cubs got there via human intervention, well, you never know just how much human intervention was involved. It would certainly be way easier and more successful to raise neonate cubs via momma bear than it would be via human substitute. Whoever had those cubs had, one hopes, anticipated that in a couple years, they would have 2 ginormous brown bears that had absolutely no fear of humans on their hands, so they would already have built the facilities for them.
      Of course, the facilities were obviously not adequate to the task if the cubs were roaming free. Whether they got loose on their own or whether they got loose via human error, that mistake should have been designed out of the facility before it ever held a bear.

But any animal that needs lots of outdoor space for sure needs to be weary of temperature and climate they live in. I see it all the time with huskys and larger winter dogs being imported to hot countries like india and such just because its not a local breed, its selfish af.

    So glad they found perpetrators of bear Knepper wh o brought these poor babies from Alaska!! And not to have an adequate enclosure, what if those bears were older and got out, could of had tragic consequence for people and bears.

    Im trying hard not to judge as an Alaskan myself who use to commercially fish out of Kodiak. I use to see them all the time in the water and also on the shores.
    These bears may have been adopted due to being abandoned or the mom passing away/being euthanized.
    I still think wild animals should be left wild. These cubs still even with their curiosity and cuteness have the potential to harm people.
    The person accountable for them needs to build better enclosures. It isn't that hard. Sounds like they underestimated their intelligence. Do better to protect the people and the bears.

      I think they need to be removed from whomever is responsible for them being there, and then fined, heavily. Then ship them back to Alaska to a wildlife sanctuary. Shouldn't take more than once to have a dangerous animal escape for their owner to be deemed irresponsible.
