Vinnie Jones said in an interview that he reckons Billy Whitehurst was the hardest player he ever came up against.

When you’re a proper hard man you’ve got nothing to prove. When challenged you say come on then and fold the bastard. That was his way. Legend. He speaks well. Intelligent fella.

I wonder if Billy had managed to copyright the term ‘warhorse’ in relation to footballers if he’d be sitting on a few bob now.
Certainly, whenever my friends and I are talking about old ‘warhorse’ strikers in the 70s/80s Whitehurst and Mick Harford’s names come up a lot.

Does anybody know how I might get in touch with Billy, please? I am researching a book on one of the clubs (now defunct) he played for.

You'd have to be brave/stupid to boo Billy. He was at the Alex when I saw him, so prob not a good fit for Bill. There is no dog track in Crewe for starters!

Seen him play at Maine Road a few times. My favourite Man City player was Paul Lake and read his book ‘I’m not really Here’ and the funny story of accidentally elbowing Billy in a game and Billy’s response! Brilliant the pair of ‘em. . .
