Jonathan lewis music I thought the same thing! Sometimes I play Chet Atkins stuff at gigs and it obviously, always gets that reaction! (I wish!!) hahaha
moviemagg I haven’t brought it up. But I think I will. He showed it to me years ago but I don’t recall how he came to owning it. If I think of it I’ll reply back to this thread.
Check it out; the Red Ryder on upright bass! I guess it was either a Black Bart-free day in Hohman, Indiana or Ralphie was covering for him that day. =)
I don't know whether to be more jealous of Chet's prototype gretsch or the guy in the back holding a stratosphere double neck guitar like Jimmy Bryant played.
There's that special, custom made Gretsch 6120 with the prototype Ray Butts pickups. Gretsch made a short run of these guitars a few years ago. Wish they would have made the pickup insert the light grey as it is in this video rather than the white. It just would have been that much better.
I would play this for music 🎼 n my stereo or on guitar I really think every guitar player should study Chet metal country blues dosnt matter he has connect dots I never would have on my oun same with reed they got me playing the guitar again after my mom died she was Chet’s BIGGEST FAN that didn’t play guitar Chet the carters Jonny cash and CCR that is all I heard grown up it’s why I picked up the guitar and I bet you there’s a million of us guitarist so good 😂 why try not even close I learnd Van Halen and satrioni because of Chet definitely 👍 my happy place I don’t even need a stereo or guitar Chet starts playing wen you gota walk 13 miles in the rain 🌧️ there he is makeing it sunnyer
@stanprag That is Jackie Phelps, and I spoke to his widow last year to ask her about it. She told me that he built a lot of his own guitars, played them a while and then tore them apart and made a different guitar out of the parts. She also said none of his guitars still exist. Too bad. P.S. It was said of Jackie that he could play "Little Rock Getaway" on a Jew's harp. Apparently, a very versatile musician.
Anyone who knows which year this is? I can not tell if it is Filtertron humbuckers or single coil on that guitar. I think Filtertrons arrived in 57 or 58...I might be wrong though. Love that piece...I hope i can work it out and play it sometime!:)
Those are Filtertrons, maybe the very first ever. If you look really closely, you'll see two rows of pole pieces, six in each row. One row is at the top of the pick-up, the other row is at the bottom. I'm going to make a wild semi-educated guess to the year, 1956.
My Dad swears he saw chet play two songs simultaneously on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show when he was younger. It was Mary had a little lamb and something else that chet played on one guitar simultaneously and distinctly. Anyone else able to verify this and anyone able to find the video. If so post it to me.
I don't know of that specific clip but there is a video on youtube at the moment titled "Chet Atkins on The Jimmy Dean Show (3 tracks)" where he plays two songs simultaneously. Humoresque and Swanee River.
Guys - I believe this is in the early 60's - (the show and it's in color and the hair styles - Country Artists then - and now for most part - allow style trends to settle in, before their more conservative manners adapt them) I'm just saying - Be curious to know actual date...
I'd say it's probably from 1955/'56 (or no later than '57), cos Chet is playing his sealed top Gretsch 6120 with prototype Filter'Tron pickups. They were introduced in 1957, so after that Chet would have played his new model, the 6122 Country Gentleman. It's definitely not as "late" as early 60's, since Chet did not play this guitar after the introduction of the Filter'Trons.
I can tell you that is Jackie Phelps, but the make or model of the guitar i cannot... Possibly custom made thought because it looks far too avant-garde for 1950's mass production.
It has a dulcimer neck on it. I believe it's one of hundreds of privately-made guitars that were out and about wherever trees grow and clever backwoods folk start to considering and mulling. Very cool! At first I thought you meant the hollowbody archtop with the cool binding, which I've seen but can't place.
Tyler Bruney Right your are, Tyler! The upper neck had that funny sort of cutaway at the headstock--not quite Strat; So cool--thanks for giving the true answer!
Guys its not that hard to play. I dont get why people here look at this in some awe of unreachable technical mastery. Just look at classical guitarists performing scarlattis baroque music and you get the picture. Chet is not shy of beauty or mastery even it is about the bloody music he is interpreting and playing well. But lets face it. He is not some unbelievable technical master.
That is just about the stupidest thing I've ever read. Guitar syncing isn't a thing, and if it was, Chet certainly wouldn't have any need to do it. Also as the person above said, you can hear him practicing before and there are several videos of Chet playing in this same venue on the same day and you can hear hear practicing and tuning in those as well.
Chet was so far ahead of his time!- Never forgotten. Astounding musicality.
Chet's amazing but how was he ahead of his time? Can you be more specific?
Yaa Chet thought he was in 2021 playing this amazing tone.. when in reality He's really in the 50s
Simply put Chet is The G.O.A.T !
@@TooleyPeter Show us anyone else playing fingerstyle to the level Chet did at this time.
Masters, make it look effortless, but the degree of difficulty is beyond what mere mortals can comprehend.
Chet Atkins is the Master of the Masters. He is The G.O.A.T !
@@hammertownpavao Say the name........., "Mr. Guitar", and that says it all.
It's not hard to play in one key at a time.
I love all of Chet's playing, but I love best his performances in the 50's, like this one.
I'd give a "thumbs up" to Chet Atkins ANYTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!
His reaction to the second applause is priceless.
Must have accidentally flicked the APPLAUSE light back on for a second
Second applause prompt had to be a mistake.
Looking at the young Chet, makes me realizing that his picking talent had already reached the top!
That control, that ease, that classiness.
Love & Miss Chet Atkins!
Bass player holding down those tempo changes like a boss!
chet is like OK?!? after that second applause in the beginning
Jonathan Lewis Yea he raises his eyebrow like "alright!" Haha
Jonathan lewis music I thought the same thing! Sometimes I play Chet Atkins stuff at gigs and it obviously, always gets that reaction! (I wish!!) hahaha
@Catcher_In_The _Pie Now let us remember: the 1950's were the best days of life... Still had. God!
He knew all the licks and all the tricks.
he invented em
Chet Atkins my guitar hero best Gretsch guitar ever made was that one in the video..
Chet Atkins is always the best, this song was in Nintendo NES game called "Pooyan" in 1985.
such a delicate touch
My cousin came into owning that exact guitar signed by Chet Atkins 25 years ago. That thing is beautiful.
How did he aquire it and what did he pay for it. And does he still have it today...
moviemagg I haven’t brought it up. But I think I will. He showed it to me years ago but I don’t recall how he came to owning it. If I think of it I’ll reply back to this thread.
We’re still waiting to hear your story.
Dude is this for real.
any updates? :)@@chkrbrdvans
Fantastique Gretsch 😊
Why is it that every guitar Chet Atkins plays looks like the coolest guitar on the planet?
King of the guitar
Just did a cover of this, its incredible how he did this live at that tempo with such ease.
exactly he always makes it look ez
Wow, you’re tone is unbelievable. Nice work!
So smooth!

I don't know whether to be more jealous of Chet's prototype gretsch or the guy in the back holding a stratosphere double neck guitar like Jimmy Bryant played.
That's Jackie Phelps, who later became more famous for comedy rather than his guitar playing as a regular on Hee Haw.
@CacophonyOfDestruction - Thanks for that, I was wondering what it was! I love his big grin as he's listening to Chet's playing.

Nobody this great seems to come along anymore.
No one ever will - Chet Atkins is the 🐐!
there is so much Django Reinhardt in his playing here, what a freaking master of his craft!

Chet J Malmsteen Sweep picking and arpeggios before it's time...
Three great guitars in this video. Is that a crazy bigsby in the background? And what about the binding on the rhythm?
I just have to know what that gentleman behind Chet is holding!

lookit that shirt!! :)
He got all the chicks
wow !
While I agree, this is a piece by Dvorak that is composed in a major key. Regardless, it is true that, in general, music was happier back then.
Yes Chet is the best ever so don't think I was never meant to be because enabled Chet with greY talentry!

I think he was lip synching. Some of the video doesn't match the audio. Either way it doesn't matter, he's still the best to ever pick up a guitar.
I dont think he was you can hear him practicing the different chords in the beginning so his guitar is definitely on.
