The rapid ultra-groovy and dazzling instrumentation was a surprising contrast to this deliciously dark story! Many vibes masterfully combined to give us another work of art on the same top tier level as Tarkus!! Thanks for watching! 🎪

I only got to see them live once, in 1977. Beforehand, I was wondering how well they'd be able to perform some of their songs live, and I was not disappointed! Amazing to see and hear so much music from only 3 guys! Keith was moving from one keyboard to another constantly, often playing both simultaneously, while moving patch cords around on a console without missing a note. This show remains a highlight among all the great bands I saw in those days.

@@retroreactions.... I had a couple of earlier opportunities to see them in the 70's and passed on them. So glad I didn't make that mistake a 3rd time! Here's some other big names I passed up in the 70's for various reasons: The Who, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Heart, Fleetwood Mac. Luckily the list of those I did see is equally impressive! Too many to name, here's just a few: Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, Bad Company, Foghat, Camel, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Areosmith, AC/DC Van Halen, Mahogany Rush. The 70's were an amazing time to see the best bands ever!

The very first concert I attended at age 19 with my younger brother was ELP the summer of 1971 at Asbury Park, NJ (Yes, the Jersey shore). Oh, my god! what an introduction to concert going! Keith Emerson was unbelievable with ultra speed on his variety of organs, synthesizers, and all sorts of gizmos. Imagine seeing a keyboardist surrounded by 5 or 6 keyboards, playing with one hand on one keyboard and the other hand on another keyboard! The music was unbelievable, unlike any other music of the times! Greg Lake's voice was fantastic and he didn't even get credit for his terrific guitar work. And how in the world did Carl Palmer keep up with Emerson's frantic pace! At the end of the night our ears were ringing, but with a good ringing that lasted for hours if not days! ELP were the Masters of progressive rock!

Will there, can there ever be another Keith Emerson? RIP... I saw ELP only once, and it was with Cozy Powell on drums. But oh my... Keith attacking his Hammond organ playing it on his back upside down!

...my 2 most epic triple live albums of all times are of the years 1973 and 1974: the YESSONGS and ELP's 'Welcome back my friends...' What they have in common is, that apart of the incredible live atmosphere, they actually also did improve the songs further for those concerts and to the (even) better... and finally: the audio quality is even stronger than on the studio versions - hard to believe, but true... after discovering that, I never went back to the studio versions, also of Karn Evil 9 - listen to their live versions, Brandon, and when you are at it, there's another outstanding live one by ELP: 'Pictures at an Exhibition' - if that doesn't blow your mind, then what does?? 🔥🎆😎

    • @JohnLRice
      @JohnLRice 5 месяцев назад +1

Absolutely! 👍 I was looking to see if anyone else commented on this before I did. The added reverb, compression and maybe even echo/delay makes this exquisitely dense and fast paced music more confusing and difficult to listen to, and works much better dryer as the original was IMHO. I also wasn't a fan of how the gaps between sections was tightened up, like between the end of the second Impression and the beginning of the Third there is more of a "breath" between them which makes the impact of the beginning of the third more impactful. And of course the fade out at the end of First Impression Part 1 and fade in for Part 2 is often removed on CD/streaming versions but on the original album it was a fun little thing, especially on first listen, that when you flipped the album over you were welcomed back! 😁 Of course I've been listening to this since the mid 70's so when people "monkey" with it in later years it tends to sound "wrong" to my ears! 😉

Really glad you reacted to this classic performance!!! I saw ELP on this Brain Salad Surgery tour in 1974, and again on their reunion tour in the 90s. Also saw Keith and Carl in 1987 when they toured with Robert Berry as the band Three. And in the proverbial being at the right place at the right time, after the show got to hang out with Keith and Carl on the tour bus for a few minutes. I've listened to Karn Evil 9 so many times over the years, and we all know the genius of Keith. But listening to this performance of how Carl carries the timing of each phrase (and with all due respect to Neil Peart, Bill Bruford, and Alan White), I keep realizing that this might be the greatest rock drum performance ever.

Still the best band of all time. No other band would be able to come up with creative inventions like this suite, no other prog rock band, not Yes, not Pink Floyd, not Rush, not Genesis, none of them had this level of musical dexterity, vision and yes technical capability. It may not be your favourite music but the level of sophistication of this is unparallelled unless of course in some of their other songs.
Brain Salad Surgery, unfortunately their last great album, but what they lack in quantity they more than make up for in quality.

So many thoughts. Lake never gets any respect as a guitarist, but his solos in this song are top-notch rock "guitar god" stuff. Emerson playing every style of music and every form of keyboard - it's astounding. Carl is... Carl: a powerhouse. The plot is much more than a sci-fi story. It's a PROPHECY! The industrial hell. The hedonistic entertainment as a distraction. The pointless war. At the end, the computer wipes out the human race, reasons with itself (faster and faster) until it realizes that its job is done and it shuts itself off. People... we are doomed.

1972’s 'Trilogy' had reached Number Two in the UK and Number Five the USA, but in rehearsing and arranging the music for their groundbreaking fifth album, ELP made a decision to pursue a quite different approach. "I think 'Brain Salad Surgery' represented creating an album out of a collective inspiration," Lake says. "Unlike the previous albums, it is almost a live recording done in a studio. The sound was quite raw and quite ambient." As Emerson recalls, “That was the general idea, to play the album live. I pretty much had the whole concept in mind... Musically, lyrically and visually, we really went for it."
The three-part "Karn Evil 9" ranks as their most ambitious and original half hour of music. Largely written by Emerson, this futuristic suite is epic prog-rock at its best. “Pete (Sinfield, Greg's old King Crimson buddy) and I got onto the idea of a world where computers actually take over from people," Lake says, "and the more we thought about it, the more sense it made. It was prophetic. The line in the song was, ‘Load your programme, I am yourself’, and I predict that it won’t be so long before computers will have almost a genetic capacity for knowing their owners, and the more control it would take, the more of your life it would consume. As the first step along the way, we have already become cellphone dependent.”
'Brain Salad Surgery' arrived on Nov. 19, 1973 as a technological wonder. It features the recording debut of a prototype Moog Apollo - the first-ever polyphonic synthesizer - and an early attempt at working with electronic drums. "We were still ascending when we made Brain Salad Surgery," Emerson says. "Because we were so rehearsed, there wasn't a lot of mucking about. We didn’t have Pro Tools and all the things that exist now. If a person made a mistake, you didn’t say, ‘Oh, we’ll fix that later.’ We really had to get it right as we played together... Again, no click tracks.” Palmer sees the album as "the group at the pinnacle of its powers. It’s very well recorded and it was definitely one of our most creative periods."
The across-the-board success of 'Brain Salad Surgery' - helped in large part by the nearly constant spins of "Karn Evil 9'"s "First Impression, Part 2" on FM radio - cemented ELP's worldwide popularity, and the group capitalized on their fame with sports-arena gigs so grandiose (over 36 tons of gear, complete with levitating, spinning keyboards, rotating drums with airport runway lights, and the world's first discrete quadrophonic PA system) that the only band who could top them was... Emerson, Lake & Palmer! And, sure enough, in 1977 they did just that on the budget-busting 'Works' tour. That's the thing about ELP at their peak: There really was no top. - Edited excerpts from Loudersound and Ultimate Classic Rock

The live version of Karn Evil 9 was my introduction to ELP, and probably the "song" that got me into synthesizers. The filter sample and hold at the beginning of the 2nd half of Part 1 was a classic, and one of the 1st things I did on my synth. The only part of the song that doesn't work for me is the organ solo in the 2nd half of part 3, it just seems out of place there. Looking back after many decades, between Tarkus and Karn Evil 9, I think I have to go with Tarkus buy just a slight bit. You need to listen to the live album Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Can you imaging hearing both Tarkus and Karn Evil 9 in the same concert? Can you imagine them being able to play both, plus many others, in the same concert? That is mind boggling. Thank you for taking this on, a very tough thing to do.

Good timing! I've been in a bit of a funk the last couple days and not many things bring my mood up like a good dose of ELP! 🥳 ELP for me is what Depeche Mode is for you Brandon! 😎I was VERY obsessed with them in high school and college years in particular. I've only seen them live about four times so I can't compare to your dedication 😅but I had all the albums, posters on my walls, t-shirts, and modeled my drum set similarly to Carl's set (no, I didn't have a rotating stage, electronic triggers, custom stainless steel shells with engraved artwork, and my gongs were much smaller).
For a majority of my last three years of high school though I did spend Saturday evening playing along to 2+ hours of ELP! Those Saturdays were awesome . . . I'd sleep in until 11 AM or so, have a big brunch while watching an old movie on local TV station's Kung Fu Theater and maybe a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits rerun, work on building or playing my PAiA modular synth in the afternoon, I'd eat dinner and watch a Star Trek rerun and an episode of Space 1999, and THEN I'd play my ELP set using headphones and my 8-track player. And then after I played I'd take a much needed shower and come down and watch the Carol Burnet comedy show and have like a quart of milk and a bowl of cookies! And to think some kids thought I wasn't hip or cool! 🤷‍♂🤣
The set was mostly full songs but only bits of others because the way the tracks worked out on the 8-track tape (ancient tech limitations! 😅) If I'm recalling correctly the full songs in the set were: The Barbarian, Knife Edge, Tank, Tarkus, second side of Pictures At An Exhibition, The Endless Enigma, Karn Evil 9 all impressions (studio version), a 5 minute water and cool down break, and then the encore of Karn Evil 9 all impressions live versions! It was a killer but I got pretty good at it if I say so myself! 💪🥵👍

Hey, I've got a double feature for you that would be fun! ELP in the '80s! 1.) Something from "Emerson, Lake & Powell" (where Cozy Powell took Carl Palmer's spot); possibly "Touch and Go" or "The Score." 2.) "Desde La Vida" by the band 3 (which was Emerson and Palmer with Robert Berry instead of Greg Lake). This song has AWESOME drum work, and the keyboards are everything one expects from Keith.

Absolutely amazing prog epic! Favorite part is 2nd Impression. Just an absolutely brilliant instrumental. But I love the other parts too.
The rights were sold to develop this into a movie. If that ever happens, we'll find out who they have winning. 😏

I truly never fully enjoyed this song until I got "Brain Salad Surgery" and "Welcome Back My Friends..." on compact disc. Flipping the album over or listening to the stops between tracks on the 8-track or turning the cassette over spoiled the flow of the song.

Somewhat serendipitously, I stumbled across a YT video of the "Oscar Peterson Show". I knew Peterson was a legendary jazz pianist. I didn't know he had a TV show. This particular show had a surprise for me as his guest: Keith Emerson. Peterson was a fan of Emerson. Genius recognizes genius. They converse for awhile, then Emerson performs on a piano. This was back in 1976, and it is a nice intersection of prog and jazz. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/2YHgWWX5DN0/видео.html

Man was NOT fighting the computer, they were partners. Together they defeated an UNNAMED and UNIDENTIFIED non-computer enemy. This is all completely obvious if you understand the English language. After the victory, man's arrogance annoys the computer, so it rips the victory from the hands of man. It was definitely not computers against man the whole time. It helps to actually listen to the lyrics.
