Boombox update- scheduled mobile service to have updated software installed. Was told by service manager “Tesla has not provided any clear direction on allowing retrofits, therefor we cannot send over update firmware. We have the ability to push, but must be sanctioned by Tesla”.
Looks like you got very lucky or maybe they HAD TO allow it because your new center console requires the new firmware. Since that console is now standard with all 2021 Y’s and so are the PWS, that may be why you got it. Just a thought.

I like the original console color. But then, I’m not a fan of white interiors. I’ve always loved black or charcoal. Glad everything worked out with the card reader. The new console looks great.

I just done the same to my model 3 except i learned from your error: i took the security module from my old console and put it into the new console. It is the same part number. It fits perfectly!
swapping it and you were able to do the console swap without any service needs?

Looks fantastic thanks for sharing; I wish Tesla would just update the Model Y console already, or did they get a Big Lots deal on the shiny ones.....we take delivery in March, may postpone delivery not sure yet.

I wrapped my center console in white also. In my humble opinion, it really is the best look. I hope Tesla makes this an option someday from the factory.

I wonder if the actual card reader computer in the center console could have been removed from the old console and swapped into the new console? or if they've got it glued or sealed in there somehow which they certainly might to prevent theft

Does the new console have usb outlets under the cell phone charging pad for the sentry drive
My guess is that the Tesla recognised an unauthorised device appearing in the cars authentication network. The car played safe and played dead rather than let people try swap things out until it works. You can guarantee that there are the black hats out there trying to find holes in the system.

Hi Daerick..do you have the part # for the new center console & double pane glass? That would be really helpful. BTW I reached out to a contact at my local Tesla service center here in Miami and he said Tesla doesnt allow them to install the console. It would have to be a 3rd parrty!

Hi Erik! Congrats with your new center console! Looks amazing! Hope they add it to the MY ASAP. I have been waiting for 3 months now ... Maybe they are waiting for Model Y’s 1 year anniversary in March to announce the new features 🤔 let’s hope sooner though.
They did add the part to the Model Y parts catalog. But then they removed it... So idk.

DÆrik, are you going to aim for a heated steering wheel retrofit? I've been asking service and tweeting at Elon and not receiving any response. I waited over 14 months for my Y knowing there was no heated steering wheel and now they have one, and I'm reminded every time I get in my pre-heated cabin and my wheel is still ice cold..

$835 isn't too awful. Would especially be a decent price if it means you can get a used Model Y with the old console at thousands less than a Model Y with new console (once that happens)

Hey Daerik, so when trying to register for the website it just wont work. I can get my email and user confirmed but whenever I try to use my email to get the password setup it doesnt redirect me to a password page to set it. Any help?

Looks great! Please don’t leave your phone in the car. It’s the same as leaving the keys in a regular car and waking away.
Nice video, had my counsel 2.0 order today. However, service department said that this is not on their approved retrofit lists. They wouldn’t install it. Also, when I asked them to sell me the speaker and then reprogram my MY to include the toolbox, they also said that it’s not approved mod, and that they are not allowed to do that. When I mention your video, they were very surprised and said that they would be in big trouble if they did it.. The moral of the story is, they have a strict policy on what they can, and cannot do, even if you hand them the money they wouldn’t be able to do “not approved” updates.
I think things have changed at Tesla in terms of upgrades.
I think the next bunch of Model Y’s will have the Gen2 Console. Just came back from Tesla store and I couldn’t take delivery of mine because they didn’t have a model y in stock with my color configuration. I find that odd. So I think they have been liquidating and are preparing to get new model Y’s from the factory which very well could have the new center console. He told me new bunch of cars will come in March.

They have to plug into the car with their laptop. Hopefully they can make it over the air eventually.

I would still personally prefer the original console design because my phone doesn't have wireless charging, but if I had a wireless charging compatible device I'd opt for the new version.
Obviously I can't opt for either since I'm a teenager and can't drive.

Tesla recently had these added to the parts catalog for Model Y. They have since been removed. So not sure when they'll come over to Model Y from the factory.

Question, Now that you replace the console does mean you will replace the glove compartment too? I ask because with the new center console the memory stick for sentry mode is not there but in the glove compartment. How much was the center console cost and can anyone get it?
There are two USB-C ports in under the sliding door. So that is where I have my SSD.

Gen 2 console definitely looks more lux. I think I'm going to do the same with my MYP. How did you handle the USB for sentry mode?
I just have a USB-C to USB-C cable that I plugged into the center console USB-C.

Help us. I don't want to be that annoying customer with Tesla Service. What's the best way to actually buy the new console, or any other part (external speaker, for example)? Did you approach the service center rep to order for you?

The new center console is dope! 11:26 that contact paper has another piece you can put on the rear vents. Are you upset the new center console doesn't have the basket?
yeah, the rear piece ties it all together nicely. I just moved my old basket into the new console

Some people have reported tesla said the new console wasn't compatible. But clearly it is. You might just have to explain to them that they need to reprogram the center console card reader, that all they need to do is plug in their computer and program it like it's a center console replacement.

They didn't charge me. Even though I tried to get them to charge me.

My understanding is that the computer in the centre console is called VCSec (Vehicle Controller Security).
This device controls all vehicle security functions. This includes the card reader in the B-Pillar, the Bluetooth connection to paired phones and the functions in the mobile app that use the on board Internet connection.
Anyone that knows more about this device or would like to correct anything I have said, please feel free, I am always happy to learn.

Out of interest did you ask Tesla if they could change the console shown in the UI in the app etc? It is presumably a configuration setting.
They said they couldn't at the time that it was set from the Factory. I haven't followed up with them since because I doubt they will allow service to change that. But maybe in the future!

@@b00573d I bought it directly from the Tesla parts department. Daerik posted a video a while back with the part #'s. I just went to the service center and ordered it...Came to ~$56.....If you order the speaker, dont forget the screws (Daerik posted the screw part #'s as well). Also, keep in mind, the part number is for ONE screw..you need 3.

I would think so. I'd submit a request and see what they say. Might take a couple weeks to even get the console in stock.
