First look at the JustFlight P38 Tomahawk in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Tonight we're taking the JustFlight P38 Tomahawk for a flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator, and doing a circuit of Wycombe Air Park to try it out. Hugely impressed. It flies wonderfully, and spins like a top :)
    Can't wait to take it out do some basic airmanship exercises.

    I took my PPL back in 1980 in a pre-AD Traumahawk, the one all the lawsuits were about. I think the stall/spin characteristics of the Just Flight product are pretty close but not quite as wicked as the real plane. Other than this very traumatic behavior, the Traumahawk was pleasant enough to fly if you weren't in a hurry and didn't mind being deafened by the engine because this was back in the pre-headset days of 1 mic on a cord and 1 speaker on the panel somewhere. But the Traumahawk did have 1 superpower, which I see you discovered. It could sideslip like nobody's business. You could cross the threshold at 1000' AGL and sideslip basically vertically with almost no forward motion to a smooth landing at the touchdown marks, with the IAS being cool with this the whole time. About 45^ of yaw and 30^ opposite bank. I've never seen the like, even in gliders. But the stall/spin characteristics still give me nightmares 40-odd years on.

    Great looking plane. The modeling is outstanding. Worth premium price. You were outstanding on controlling the spinning plane after stall. Apparently this is very realistic and earned the nickname, Traumahawk..

    I envy the many out there who trained in one, this model is so nicely done that it must thrill those folks. My 11 hours back 8n '72 were in a red Grumman AA-1A. It had a big dayglo orange placard NO SPINS, strictly prohibited in that type for good reason. Ours was owned by a flying club, and a student had run it through a fence a year earlier. After repair it wasn't "quite right", would drop the right wing hard in a stall so you had to be ready to slam left rudder and help get that nose down quick. I suppose this was the club's own iteration of a "traumahawk" training aid. Anyway, I'm envious you guys.

    Brilliant, thanks. Just a bit of advice for those that use FSRealistic. Disable the "Propwash" feature or your rudder/steering won't work until you're going about 30knots - and by then, you've probably crashed into something 🙂

      Would you also know a thing about unlocking the controls, please? I've bought it a day now but can't seem to get the rudders to move apparently because control surfaces are locked. I've looked everywhere. Would be grateful for any help please.

      @@kokoeteantigha389 - The rudder is linked to the nosewheel steering mechanism, which won't turn on the ground while stationary and therefore prevents the rudder from moving too. When the checklist calls for a flight control check just check the ailerons and elevator, then check the rudder as part of the nosewheel steering check once you're moving. In the real life aircraft you could damage the steering by trying to force the rudder pedals while stationary.
      Let us know if this doesn't help so somebody else can jump in, but I'm fairly sure it will.

    This is a lovely addon from Just Flight. The attention to detail is amazing. A small trainer, but mighty in the air. Many real pilots will love this, as I am sure they will have have trained in this, so there will be that connection. But I am sure many desktop pilots will like this too !. Good clear cockpit, nice instruments, nice tablet options and walkaround adding immersion, very approachable to fly and good flight model. Taking time out from flying metal tubes at 30000 feet, so to speak lol !, to actually fly this neat little trainer over some pleasant scenery in MSFS flight simulator is a real plus point. Of course you can do this in a box standard Cessna, or Commanche, or some of the other ones. We are spoilt for choice with GA aircraft in the Sim, but this is a P38 Tomahawk and it has its own loveable idiosyncracies. Its the modelling that stands out for me. Thank you Just Flight.

    I really enjoy watching your videos. I'm very focused on one plane in the moment and its the Comanche but I need something to switch to not get to comfortable in one plane. And I don't feel like it's time to switch to bigger planes. I waited for your review to get my last doubts blown away. thank you

    Great video, Jonathan, brought back many happy memories, as I flew GPES to get my ppl at sherwood flying club at Tollerton....So pleased to see it, can't wait to buy it. Thanks again, looking forward to more videos in GPES :) Dave

    The tonahawk is really nice. For me it will be the next purchaise, I don't know how many will buy a trainer. Most simmers prefers speedy turboprops full of Garmin suites, because on MSFS .... costs to own and mainteinance are not a problem. 😆😉

    I think I flew all of my flying school's Tomahawks at one time or another, but don't remember the fuel pump making such a loud clicking noise on any of them. Took a while to work out what it was. Have only tried it for a few minutes so far, and it seems very good.

    I use TrackIR, and after months of frustration with wonkiness that seemed to only occur on weekend afternoons I realized it was the sunlight.

    Nice video and great flying! ☺ 👌
    One comment though: when in a full spin I'd rather kill the throttle (right at the point when the spin develops), controls to neutral and then counter the spin with the rudder. Carefully bring her out of the dive and not until then apply throttle as needed. If you apply full throttle while in the dive you really accelerate very fast and might even overspeed the the plane.

    Excellent review! I must admit that this aircraft has a very accurate modeling in every way as you've proven.
    The only thing about the Tomahawk that I never really liked is that it's so darn slow! That's the only thing that puts me off about the sim version (and the real life version). That said, I can't help but love the great job that they've done with this plane and if it could only have been about 100 kts faster, I'd buy it.
    Still, this simulator version seems to be very close to to a 'study version' of the real thing and I think it would give a real-world pilot and prospective buyer a very good idea of what they could expect.

    I only know the Tomahawk from my visits to the Belgian zoo Pairi Daiza, where they have one for the hyenas to play with.
    I think I know where the next purchase is going to. 😊

    Great video. I learn something in all of them. I ask you, when you can, to explain to us how this VOR navigation device works, it has many submenus and I get lost. Thank you so much for being there.

    Can you do a flight to VNKT(airport in kathmandu). May be from Paro or any airport you want on a A310-300 by inibuild. Land on Runway 02. It's one of the challenging airport.May be on one of your stream. Please consider that.

    Looks great, though in all fairness i do think the price is a bit steep for my wallet as someone who already owns the other Pipers and the Commanche.

      Im torn between this and the Commanche, I do think this is a little overpriced in comparison to the A2A aircraft

      @@peterprow6093 Well from what i experience with the Arrows, i expect the Tomahawk to have a slightly nicer flightmodel, and (imo) it looks better.
      The visuals on the PA-24 are not as good, while not bad either.
      But the PA-24 jut offers so much more and depending on what you want to do with it, it does cruise quite a lot faster.
      But i have to say, if i had to pick just one, hmmm i think i'd still take that Tomahawk to putter around in haha. Do an UK cross country trip or something.

      Im leaning towards the P38. It represents the sort of thing I'd be flying locally (Nottingham uk) if I had gone for my licence.
      I know the A2A plane is a work of genius, but I just can't get excited about it

    Those that are having issues with their rudders - there is NO control lock in the Tommy. Check if Prop Wash is enabled in Fs Realistic if you have it installed, and turn it off. That will fix the rudder problem.

    Flew the real bird 45 years ago with the old Bendix/King stack. You seem to have figured out the sensitivity settings on the yoke and rudders - it seems really squirrelly out of the box. Love to know your settings. I was all over the place when I first tried it.

    I recently returned to DCS after a long break, first time with my pimax Crystal. I was absolutely blown away by the clarity and performance you get with Quad views and DFR. MSFS is so blurry by comparison I struggle to go back. I suspect I won't be able to see all these lovely textures at their best in VR

    Buggy on Xbox x. Some designated switches don’t work, fuel pump and lights. I cant change the avionics in tablet. Still good but it’s no Comanche.

    I love the plane but it's _really_ strongly affected by any Wind for me. Having read the FAQ JF suggests setting the turbulence assistance to LOW or MID. Have you guys done this?
    The behaviour I get with all assistance settings on hard/realistic ist vastly different from whats shown in the video - my little plane ist getting thrown around like in a severe storm, altough I'm on clear skies preset (1kt Wind + 1kt gust). I can only enjoy flying it with the Wind completely disabled :-(

    What's the FPS ? Any reduction with the higher 8K resolutions and wear and tear engine working in the background ?

    Anyone else having issues getting this thing to turn on the ground? Controls are fine, no other aircraft has issues. Seems like rudder inputs are doing nothing on the ground. Also when I do a flight controls check, the yoke moves fully in every direction, but there is no elevator movement outside. So far, it seems my copy is buggy....

      Seeing as everybody has the same aircraft, it's almost impossible that you have a buggy coppy - rather there's something odd going on with your installation of flight simulator and/or it's configuration. That said, the aircraft WAS updated last night - I haven't been back into the sim for the last 36 hours though, so can't say for sure :)

      @@jonbeckettI’ve seen a few other reports of the same issue I’m seeing. Plus my other just flight aircraft have had similar issues in the past as well. No other MSFS aircraft I have installed is having the same issue. Maybe the update will fix it.

      As I understand it, they've modelled ground friction, so the rudder won't deflect until the aircraft is rolling. I don't know whether that's the cause of your problem or not, but something to bear in mind.

      @@wombleway Yeah I was aware of that, but even when I'm rolling like 10 kts across the ramp I still have no rudder or nosewheel steering. I'm going to update the plane and see if that fixed it.

      Hey Jon, I figured out the problem. For some reason having FSRealistic running while in the Tomahawk causes the rudder axis to just simply not work. As soon as I shut off FSR, I got my rudder to work.

    Is it me or the rudders are buggy? They do not respond to any input. There's something in the checklist about releasing the control locks and I've watched your entire video and you don't engage anything to unlock them.
    Any assistance in this regard would be much appreciated please. Thanks.

    I don't think this is built from the ground up and is based on and ported from the Alebeo pa38 model.

      Why you would think that I don't know! But just to confirm it's certainly not based on or ported from the Alabeo PA-38. Quite the assumption really but not something that Just Flight would ever consider doing.
