  • The Field Notes pocket notebook is an indispensable part of my EDC collection. There are two ways I use field notes in addition to a bullet journal: daily notes/ideas and time tracking. I love the portability of Field Notes, so easy to slide in a pocket or bag without any fuss.

I just purchased a set of journals in the fields notes size by a different company. Your video was encouraging. Now I have something to consider when I am using and carrying them. I currently do much of my bullet journaling in an A6 size. All works better in my season of life right now. Thank you for sharing this and your time. I appreciate you.

I have done my bullet journal in a pocket Moleskine and decided to go with a traditional size journal this year. I remembered watching this video awhile back. I'm glad I came back to it, I knew I needed something in my pocket. I wasn't sure how to make them work together. Thank you for this video Matt!

I am so happy to hear this. I was struggling in deciding which journal to take on my trip. Mainly because I didn't want to carry it with me all day. Your idea of a field notes book solved my issue.

Good to see other like-minded people. I also carry a pocket sized notebook, not always FN but still same size. TRUE, I hardly ever resort back to my phone notes, I’ll easily drift off to a game or other app. But when sitting in traffic or Barber shop, I’ll definitely flip back through my pocket carry NB. I do need to get better about migrating important notes, but nonetheless they got captured! Btw nice arm ink Matt!

  • @carolynnicole

I actually use a similar set up, with field notes notebooks (which ladies have a purse to put it in, forget pockets) but then I scan the important notes into my digital notebook (Noteability) because some things I need to remember and don’t want to rewrite or type. It works pretty well.

    1. Amen. The phone is a distraction device for some people, like myself. Analog is more effective for me. 2. I am female and also use field note sized notebooks (Decomposition brand or Rhodia). I chose them specifically because they are small enough to fit in my small wristlets and small clutch wallets, when I can’t fit my journal.

I use a field notes (in a TN setup) for my personal Bujo daily logging for similar reasons . A while back decided to separate out my personal and work BuJos, but the field notes is a good bridge between them.

I finally committed to doing bullet journaling for the last 3 months but I do it on GoodNotes. The last month it’s been hit and miss because it’s hard to do on a phone or 12.9 inch iPad. I think I’ll switch back to physical pocket sized book on the go, too.

Hi Matt! Do you organize your FN? Is it just a straight page by page? Do you index it? With your time tracking, does that have its own section and then you have another place to "dump?"

I have basically been doing this for grad school tasks (scribbling in a notebook then transferring to an organized monthly and weekly spread) but I never thought of using this system for other parts of my life and it’s something I definitely need to do it, especially because of the phone distraction!

Hey Matt -- reviewing some older Bujo Video for 2024 - Are you still using the Field Notes to augment the Full Size Bullet Journal? I love it the Bujo Edition 2 but it is BIG and dont always carry it with me I am trying to find the perfect size/blend between easy carry and comfortable writing and it simply does not exist. Tied of spending money on different journals :) :) THANKS -- Truly Appreciate your videos Many Blessings to you and your Family in 2024 .

I have a pocket sized travelers notebook. I prefer the same sized Cahier notebooks because I prefer stitched instead of stapled. Doesn’t fit in my back pocket, but since I used it also as my wallet it fits well in my purse! But if I were a guy, I would have a Cahier or Field Notes in my back pocket!

As a woman, EMT, and momma, I can say that I have found plenty of places to stick my notebooks. Purses, even the small ones, in my kiddos bag, in my breast or thigh pocket of my uniform, fits great in a scrub shirt pocket, and in my oversized wallet.

Yes, phones are a source of distraction. Actually, that's the apps/big-tech business model ;) Before that, a former boss of a French TV channel once said "my job is to sell brain availability to Coca-Cola", which was eye-opening for many people (not enough, maybe ^^).
My first bujo was a pocket notebook like this (64 pages 9x14cm) and after trying various formats it's what's work the best for me as a bujo, up to A6. I keep larger formats for writing sessions and art journaling :-)

  • @Ggoldwyn

True, doesn't work for women pockets often, or there are no pockets... but I have been loving this size and notebook type lately. Fits into practically any purse or backpack l use. And my winter coat has big zipper pockets and the field notes fit perfectly there too. My phone needs more room. Also fits in most pouches I use to organize my bag. So i can pick one, put the notebook, few pens and highlighter and it's good to go. Or I can just take the notebook and pen in my pocket. When your overwhelmed there is something really soothing about all your planning or notes condensed to that size
