      As I mentioned above this is how all videos of people talking used too be edited. It's not to create interest but to cover up ummms and ahhhs and mistakes/restarts we have all just become. used to "RUclips" editing which simply cuts out the error or stumble and continues. The head simply jumps in the frame an no one no longer cares. I would have been sacked in the old days if I did what today is normal.

    • @ShovelChef
      @ShovelChef 4 года назад +15

      It's the frequency! And amplitude! 😂 And it's stylistically barbaric, EVEN by RUclips standards.
      They don't have to zoom on every jump, even if they're cutting speech errors, which I doubt, in this case. And they reeeally don't have to zoom that far either. I don't think they hired a veteran to do it. They wouldn't do this, even under pressure. It's some kid who doesn't know any better, and a head producer or chief editor somewhere up the chain, who's overworked and on too much of a deadline to send it back. It's dumb use of an otherwise standard technique. It's rushed, crappy, ugly, nauseating, seizure inducing, overused, poorly used, bad editing.

      @@cameronthomas2913 That's not quite true. the test for an active infection, meaning that viruses were found (PCR-test) is pretty accurate (above 90%). Furthermore, it can only test false negative (it looks at the genetic strains of the viruses in the test, other viruses aren't recognized, but in may overlook viruses if there are not enough). However, because they may be falsely negative, the WHO requires patients to be tested negative twice before being discharged (plus not having any symptoms anymore. apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/331509/WHO-COVID-19-lab_testing-2020.1-eng.pdf). Dr. Yasmin, thanks for the excellent video. One aspect of dealing with COVID-19 that I would appreciate your taking a look at is the path to finding antiviral or other drug treatments that target the COVID-19 virus. What ended the HIV epidemic and turned a death sentence into a very expensive but chronic disease was the development of drug cocktails aimed at HIV. As far as I know, there isn't any current vaccine for HIV.
    One other sad aspect of implementing a vaccination program if and when we develop a vaccine is the anti-vax movement. There's no guarantee that enough people will take the vaccine to provide the necessary herd immunity. Also, I had heard numbers more in the range of 90-95% vaccination rates to develop the necessary herd immunity for highly contagious viruses like chicken pox and measles. The explosive exponential growth of COVID-19 in the US in the last two months hints that the novel coronavirus may a very high transmissibility as well.

      @elenaweisser1088 4 года назад +8

      Generally a seasonal allergy to pollen doesn't put you more at risk for contracting covid-19, as far as we know. If you do however, take strong immunosuppresive drugs, usually something containing corticosteroids, that would increase your risk of contracting any infection, since it "slows down" your immune system. Also i could imagine that if the mucosa in your nose is extremely sore it could also be easier for a pathogen to enter through there, but that would not be a huge risk.

      The cells that are responsible for 'memory' in your immune system are 'memory T cells', a type of white blood cell. Memory T cells are antigen-specific (meaning the specific antigen on a virus or bacteria must match the antibody exactly to activate them) that remain long-term after an infection has been eliminated. The memory T cells are quickly converted into large numbers of 'effector T cells' which trigger an immune response upon reexposure to the specific invading antigen, thus providing a rapid response to past infection. If a virus mutates and this causes the antigens to change shape, even slightly, then they can't be recognised by the memory T cells. Chicken pox doesn't mutate very often, where as rhinoviruses do. Hence the difference in immunity. I hoped this helped answer your question :)

    How about how some are talking about the degree to which someone is exposed to the virus. For example, if someone is exposed to lots of infected people, such as the case is with doctors and health care professionals, they are more likely to develop severe symptoms and have a higher mortality rate because they are being exposed to more virus. Whereas if you catch the virus because you passed by an infected person on the street, your symptoms will be less severe and you’re more likely to recover. Has there been any study on that? I love your little chart, it really puts everything in perspective. I’m getting so annoyed because many people are assuming Covid 19 is something you get once and recover but we don’t know if that’s even true. Herd immunity may not be plausible. They have said 20-30% of cases have gotten it a second time. I’m wondering if it might be like chicken pox but some people develope the shingles or they get it again if their immune system goes down. That would be kinda scary.

Make yourself a mask, if your job doesn’t provide one so you’re less likely to touch your face and so that if you do get it, you don’t share it. I recommend using a design with ties, not ear loops, if you’re going to be wearing it all day.

    What I find puzzling is why countries like South Korea and China seemed to get the disease under control, without infecting many more people. For a disease with an R number that is greater than flu, I would have expected more infections, not an early plateau. Is it possible that prior infections with other corona viruses in the past has reduced the severity of infection in many who were exposed? Are you confident the low prevalence of antibody spike after an outbreak is not underestimating the number of people exposed?

    My daughter has had chicken pox 4 times now. I took her to see the doctor the second, third and fourth time as I couldn’t believe she had it again (and again and again!) apparently it’s rare but can happen.
    She’s also had scarlet fever twice - again I was told it was rare to have it twice.
    She reacts badly to immunisations. Standard immunisations wipe her out for 3 days and she gets fevers. Flu shot (nasal spray) is it’s worst 2 weeks of being ill each time. Too sick to go to school and a good week of being too ill to get out of bed.
    I wouldn’t be surprised if she is the rare statistic of people who still catch things like measles even though she’s had all her vaccinations.
    We have also had her checked out and tested at the hospital for issues with her autoimmune system and tests have all come back fine. She’s just one of those people.

      SuSpence having had Shingles, I don’t want it again because it’s extremely painful! Nerve endings scream in pain! Nothing seems to help. Worse pain I’ve ever experienced!

      SuSpence - a weakened immune system can put you at risk for shingles, and just about everything else - stay healthy.

      That is with the vaccine infection. I believe Natural chicken pox infection does not lead to that. Two payouts for big pharma, when people are kids and then as adults.

      Allie - "Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles" - with that said, I tend to agree with you - over the years, why hasn't the original vaccine been modified to kill the inactive virus before it reactivates?

      I’m pretty sure when a virus goes dormant there aren’t actually any virus particles. The virus injects its DNA in a cell, but the cell doesn’t read that DNA for some reason. A vaccine helps the body target virus particles not the DNA, so it won’t help once it is dormant.

    The focus on antibodies misses the role of B cells which themselves produce the antibodies and are the memory cells for recognizing an antigen. Generally for a new antigen, it takes 7-10 days to mount a defense. With the B cell having been primed, it takes perhaps two days to mount the defense, I.e., produce the quantities of antibodies needed.

    Isn't the 'w' in whooping cough silent? I had it as a kid so I grew up having heard of it, but I've never heard the 'w' - it's always been pronounced as if there were no 'w' at all. I nearly wrote 'like who and where' but then I realised it's the opposite - in fact I can't even think of another word that starts with 'wh' but where the 'w' is silent.

    I got a flu shot when I was younger but then we stopped getting it because it made us get sick with the flu even though we were given the shot.
