I wish we could see Madonna’s full and uncut dance number for More somewhere. Beatty cut her performance to ribbons ignorantly believing that everyone actually came to see the movie for him, poor dolt.
No mention of Dick Tracy cynically recruiting composer Danny Elfman to produce what is basically a _sound-alike_ for his own Batman score. No mention either of the many original songs by Broadway darling Stephen Sondheim. I feel like audiences' appreciation of music in the movies (and in general) went into a steep decline around about 1970, hitting rock bottom by about the mid 1990s, when real orchestras were regularly being replaced by hokey-sounding synthesizers, and nobody seemed to complain. In the 1990s, you'd occasionally meet somebody's Dad who was fanatical about Ennio Morricone's music for Leone's spaghetti westerns, or who felt all warm and nostalgic about Nino Rota's score for The Godfather. Music seemingly used to be much more important. To the degree that in the 1960s, films like Lawrence of Arabia had both an overture and an intermezzo. As if for a good many of the audience, the film was just an excuse to hear Maurice Jarre's latest symphony. I guess the moral is that in America, anything that resists commoditization will be easily replaced by a mass-produceable substitute. And any memory of what made the pre-commoditized property good or beloved will be forcibly knocked out of the cultural memory through repetitive bombardment with banalities.
Fantastic set design, great costumes, and nothing else. The story is just an assembly line of random events. Batman 89 was almost as sloppy but at least it gave the characters some motivations.
Murphy hit gold with 48 Hrs, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, and Coming To America. But with a few exceptions ( Bowfinger, Dream Girls, Nutty Professor), he has phoned it in with lazy performances, kid friendly junk, and voice over cash grabs.
Comic book/strip movies peaked with "Dick Tracy" and none of the subsequent efforts have come close to matching its artistry. It's a pity the picture isn't more popular.

Nutty Professor was epic. It may have been his very best.
For every good movie he does, he does three or four pieces of crap

Dick Tracy was decent. The love story was well done and the production design was beautiful but it's not much of a film.
It's been collecting something of a cult following in recent years. Interesting that both Gene and Roger liked it.
"It's a pity the picture isn't more popular." That's because the movie is boring and nobody bought it.
