This is my favorite song within the entire LOONA discography! The experimental use of many elements is mad awesome! The producer or producers sure shined in this! Future bass with hints of ballad, tropical house, hip-hop, and pop is amazingly shown in this weirdly yet appealing structure!
I see some people don't like the synth break and the rap part. The first time I listened to it, yes, it sounded kind of messy, but then I listened it with HQ headphones, and it really sounds good. Actually, that's my favourite part.
People just don’t have taste. And no I’m not just saying that because they don’t like music I like, I’m saying that because some people physically lack the capacity to interpret music.
They are! At the end of Umu's reaction, she states, "this song is weird enough rhythmically and has enough irregular measures to add to the react list." So cen can definitely expect them to react to it in the future!! :)
Chenyeol K Let Me In still my favorite song from Loona "musically" speaking. It made me stan loona as soon as got released. Beautiful lyrics, vocals, mv... Leaderseul
What happens meter-wise in the dance break is basically that there's one additional beat before the synth hits (so I guess the bar before it is 5/4 or something?), then the whole break is in 3/4 except the last bar leading into Jinsoul's rap, which is in 4/4 again like the rest of the song. It took me a while to realize, but once I got into the groove it was easy since I actually composed something working similarly meter wise. The rap section also sounds really weird on first listens because you come to expect the whistle starting on beat 1 from its previous appearances in the song but it's offset one beat late just for this section. As you noticed, the chorus also plays with your expectations because ascending melody lined like the 7-1-3-4-5 at the beginning of the chorus are usually found in other songs with the last note hitting on the first downbeat, but here it ends on the second downbeat instead, and the fact that the beat effectively drops only on 2 tricks you into thinking there was an irregular measure. tl;dr this is madness
i actually liked the synth at first listen? it actually gave me goosebumps which is hella rare. it was just strange and yet somehow extremely cohesive.
I think this is one of the very few instances where I wished the reaction/review delved more into the visuals instead of focusing just on the music. It's only because the Loonaverse lore is one of the most interesting things about this group (besides the music). Loonatics tend to be obsessed with the lore and the storyline that connects the MVs, the colors, fruits, and animals that represent each girl (which is part of the lore). The fact that Heejin (first girl) meets Olivia (last girl) and completes the Loona circle (full moon), was such a huge moment for Loonatics, since we've been following the unveiling of the group since 2016. Finding out that Olivia's animal is a wolf was also a big moment, because Loona needed an apex predator and we finally got one. Her burning the cygnet, Clueless uniform, and cassette tape was all tied to the lore. Same with the claw crane catcher repeatedly missing her, or her falling. And JinSoul's part had "Fallen Angel" behind her in Chinese, as well as a bunch of empty cans around her. These are references to the movies of Wong Kar Wai (famous and influential Hong Kong film director). He has a movie with the same title ("Fallen Angel") that's about unrequited love between an assassin's clean-up person and the assassin, and another movie called "Chungking Express" where one character eats lots of canned pineapples (Go Won's fruit). But I get that not everyone's into the lore, especially when the lore itself isn't necessarily profound or required to enjoy the music. It's more like icing on the cake that makes it more fun/involved.
I love the part when u mentioned 'the melody wasn't moving as much as u like it' and next, your eyes popped and your facial expression was like your soul just got sucked out of your body.. NICE!! haha!
This was a really interesting reaction video! I always love hearing what you have to say and I'm completely with you in hoping that Loona stick to their unique styles and concepts when they debut as 12 members. I've been a kpop fan for a long time (like 6 or 7 years now I think) and I can honestly say that a lot of Loona's songs don't sound like anything else I've ever heard in kpop, which is a big part of what I love about them. Although to be honest I don't think there is that much of a risk of Blockberry Creative changing their sound to be more generic and commercial just yet because they said in the description for Olivia Hye's video that the purpose of this debut project was to build up credibility in the quality of their music and trust in the team among fans so I don't think they would suddenly go against that trust they've built up just because it might be the safer option. I don't know for sure because plenty of kpop labels have not been completely honest or gone against things they've said in the past, but Blockberry seems to be very good at listening to and considering what fans have to say so far and I think Loona has so much potential to be something special. I'm so excited to see what they're going to do next and I look forward to seeing more reaction videos!
I'm crying @ all the faces you're making while trying to figrue out the song lmao. Loved this release, it's incredible how consistently great LOONAs music is! Olivia Hye's B-Side Rosy with GoWon and HeeJin is super cool too.
I love the connection between the first member and the last. If haven't noticed the crescent moons in the beginning of each MV, Olivia's crescent had completed the cycle, on the left side of the screen, telling the audience that LOONA has finally run it's course (with members of course). I thought that was a really cool element
The drop is 5 eighth notes starting an eighth beat before the measure, then the actual drop occurring on beat 2. No irregular measures needed. I was confused at the beginning too.
not only are all the LOONA songs amazing and our girls are so talented...the lore is so fuckin interesting! i love all the theories and the fans coming together to figure out who each member signifies...what has happened in the LOONAverse...ughhhh QUEENS
For the bridge, does anybody else feel like she should have went a whole step higher before getting to the final chorus? That little climbing up melody feels so climactic but doesn't resolve so I get cheesed all the time lol.
Yeah she could have went a step higher. I was thinking the same, it kinda leaves me unsatisfied lol. When I sing it in my head I always "finish" it with going a step higher for the melody at the end.
Nazareno Chaves yeah maybe because Sonatine does the same thing to me. The outro key is different from the intro because of that chromatic step. Im always expecting it to end the way it started with the way Hyunjin sings the very first line so Im always left unsatisfied and relistening lol So Umu says Egoist is in Eb and I played around within that key on my guitar to figure out why the bridge feels incomplete. When she sings 내게 (naege = Korean word me/I) her vocals slide up starting from F and end up on Db. The reason why it feels incomplete is because we expect a very high Eb to finish that section off, or better yet, START the NEXT section off with a high Eb for background vocals while the main vocals get back to the chorus. I guess that's another thing we've come to expect in Kpop. High epic adlib vocals in the background during the outro chorus. Anyways My music theory isn't as sound (heheh) as Umu's and her friends, but I think because we don't hear the root note of the song's key to end that part with, it gives us that feeling of being incomplete. Plus the lack of epic background adlibs especially considering how extra the song already is, you'd think it would go all out for the end but it doesn't lol. So you come back to listen the more epic middle section instead of anticipating a pretty steady final section.
Well a possible thing which could have happened is a modulation to another key with the last note. But that's pretty untypical for an EDM heavy song like Egoist. I also noticed the missing adlibs in the last chorus. It was like honey in Chuu's Heart Attack. So I also miss that for Egoist. From what I can hear here is that Olivia is not a very strong vocalist. (Maybe that's a reason for her not going a step higher and having no belting adlibs?) Her very soft voice is a good contrast to that heavy instrumentation. But sometimes it feels like her vocals are drowning in the loud instrumentals. Maybe that's just me.
Qunibert yeah not many power vox in Loona unfortunately. If at all? I don't recall many belted out notes in any of their songs, but it's something maybe Haseul, Heejin, and Chuu can develop in time. They sound like they have the potential for it.
2:16 Yep...me exactly the first time I heard it. I got chills and I literally froze. I rewind to that every time I listen to this song. Which is a lot all day everyday this week :P Good thing I'm not listening from the CD or I'd scratch the shit out of it.
I’ve been waiting for this reaction~ thank you! Been wanting to hear more music analysis-wise of this song and I feel very satisfied with this explanation~ Will be looking forward to the Musicians’ Reaction! 💙
I knew you would love this one the moment I saw it, I think Kevin would trip out on it also. I am really looking forward to what they do, and hope they didn't already run dry on the creativity here.
Did anyone else notice that Olivia is the one who took the ear bud out of JinSoul's ear? If Heejin is Genisis/Alpha, Olivia is Terminus/Omega. Creator/Lucifer. That's why the end so such a "HOLY FRIGGIN SHIT!" moment.
I loved watching your reaction as much as listening to your review. Songs like this throw us listeners off the first time but are very fascinating when broken down.
Yeah, the transition from the 1st verse to the chorus was very smooth, a bit too smooth IMO. I would have loved more bang to it. The build-up was not intense enough. Also, I would have preferred JinSoul's rap somewhere else in the song. Maybe after the 2nd chorus? Because that synth part was so in-your-face fantastic and loud and JinSoul's part is very mellow, seemed a bit out of place to me.
I also thought there wasn't enough build up and said "oh, so this is the chorus?", and then I was blown in the dance break, and the salvation of jinsoul's rap. Hahaha. Although the song is catchy and grown in me as I listened to it, i'm not a big fan of this song (i have similar feels with yve's new and gowon's one and only when it was released)
Remember Love and Evil? Olivia as the fallen angel and portray the evil. I think Loonaverse tells us that to understand Love, we need to understand evil. Evil is actually essential to love. Selfishness is associated with being evil or any negative connotation. Be selfish but not that selfish. Just like the lyrics say, "It is not an accident that I meet me." So "love myself today."
Yea olivias song is definitely creepy and eerie, but I believe that's because the fact that she's on the end of the mobius strip which in theory means that the very end of it is dark, backwards, disturbing and all around negative so that will mean that it makes the song and video creepy, each solo video is goes through the mobius strip, at least that's the theory
An insignificant but interesting tidbit: That synth break uses many of the same synths and irregular measures as a genre called Future Bass, which may have influenced this song to an extent. :D
That timing issue you had Umu initially sounded to me like there's a 2 beat bar (2/4) stuck in amongst the 4 beat bars (4/4), but on listening to it further, I'm convinced there could be two 3 beat bars (3/4) inserted in there. From where you started to count, after 2 4/4 bars there are 2 3/4 bars and then back to 4/4. I'm probably wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.
listen, I'm gay but it saddens me that a lot of people view the scenes where Olivia is with another girl as gay because it's actually really symbolic of Olivia accepting and loving herself. The girl Olivia hugs is literally the part of herself that she didn't accept. the girl is literally Olivia.
Theory: Olivia is Lucifer, the fallen angel, hinting to so many references within her MV. (Yves represents a god, keep this in mind). In Olivia's MV we see the claw from the claw machine Yves was using, however it was above Olivia and never "collected" her. In Yves' MV she was using the claw machine and was "collecting" the other members of her unit, hence the penguin (Chuu) plush. The Chinese characters behind Jinsoul in her rap, hinting to the words "Fallen Angel". The feathers on the bed are Yves' feathers. After Yves and Olivia used to lay together as one in the kingdom/garden of Eden, Olivia felt as if they didn't need Yves as they would put her in command and they wouldn't be able to embrace themselves. So Olivia became a fallen angel/demon because of that reason, hence the white feathers (Yves') on the bed turn red as Olivia embraces herself away from the group. These are just some theories I have heard, except parts of the last one I came up with myself!
interesting thing i noticed, but i think the whistle also might follow the same notes(?) or melody as the weird muted xylophone sound in red velvet's peek-a-boo
I saw this channel has a very tight schedule (thanks for all the hard work btw) so tbh I’d feel bad for requesting things so I’d rather want to recommend something u could listen to in your free time regardless of making a video on it or not, simply because I think it’s very unique and enjoyable. The song is called “I Will Leave You” by a very old kpop group called SeSeSe but it was recently rearranged and sang by Red Velvet. I’d especially recommend the official audio instead of the stage (way better quality). hope ur doing good~
Personally I liked the composition (except for the synth break I could have lived without it. Just kinda sounded like the composer was trying to do something cool but it ended up sounding random.) The thing that is really iffy though is the mix and master. I have no problem with using a lot of reverb for a certain stylistic approach but if you're going do it it's not really a great idea to crush the master as much as they did. When you do that the amount of reverb increases and everything ends up sounding very muffled. Also, the amount of compression becomes very noticeable in the chorus. The transients of the drums get lost under everything else and that punch that the chorus would have had disappears. Overall though I do like the song I just wish the post production would have been more on point. Also side note if you can open the song in a DAW and look at that sausage of a waveform hahahhaha RIP dynamic range the loudness war continues lol
I saw your comment in teaser MV so I am waiting for your MV reaction.. kkkㅋㅋㅋ * 'Hye', I think pronounced like 'hyeh' (with 'hy' like in 'hyunjin') or 'heh' (without 'y' or almost without 'y').
so weird I got a Verizon commercial before this video and in the the guy was talking about family plans and he said "mix and match" and like a minute ago I was listening to LOONA girl front which was from the album "mix and match" creeepy
Love your reactions!! 💕is there any chance you'll be reacting to the new subunit's (yyxy) mv? Also, have you seen the leaked ot12 dance break yet from this past weekend? its INSANE adklfjhj
tbh the last three notes of the synth break sound a lot like the hook of an odd eye circle song, girl front I think? which is really cool since JinSoul, an oec member, starts rapping right afterwards, so it serves like some kind of introduction to her part. idk, might just be me though
Umu: The melody isn't moving as much as i like it
Video: oh really?
Umu: *Shocked*
“push her off the roof! or make out”
ME TOO 😂😂😂
This is my favorite song within the entire LOONA discography!

I need some time to adjust to the synth break because I don't typically like glitch break xD
same I love it a lot?
People just don’t have taste. And no I’m not just saying that because they don’t like music I like, I’m saying that because some people physically lack the capacity to interpret music.
Musicians should react this song too!!! I wanna know what they think about this.
They are! At the end of Umu's reaction, she states, "this song is weird enough rhythmically and has enough irregular measures to add to the react list." So cen can definitely expect them to react to it in the future!! :)

The melody isn't moving as much as i would like it to _is followed by the that drop that made lcm quake_

I’m fine with either one

Luca Faustini oh my god you are a genius now it all makes sense thank you so much!
Άννα Χ. same!! that's so genius gosh the composers are out of this world this song is a fcking masterpiece
Me : being egoist is disgusting behavior.
*Olivia Hye Egoist drop*
Me : Man, I am so egoist.
i actually liked the synth at first listen? it actually gave me goosebumps which is hella rare. it was just strange and yet somehow extremely cohesive.

Oh my god yeah...that second verse with Heejin rapping and the following part are so epic
HOLY SHIT YESSSSS, I cant wait for the "Classical musicians react to" version 😍😍😍
Anton Yang thisss
I love the connection between the first member and the last. hELLO GAYNESS! AHAHAHAHAHHAHA
Qunibert i think is in purpose: now you will listen more often the song to full your unsatisfaction
Nazareno Chaves yeah maybe because Sonatine does the same thing to me. The outro key is different from the intro because of that chromatic step. Im always expecting it to end the way it started with the way Hyunjin sings the very first line so Im always left unsatisfied and relistening lol
So Umu says Egoist is in Eb and I played around within that key on my guitar to figure out why the bridge feels incomplete.
Anyways
My music theory isn't as sound (heheh) as Umu's and her friends, but I think because we don't hear the root note of the song's key to end that part with, it gives us that feeling of being incomplete.
I've been patiently waiting for this

This is awesome! 🤟
i was waiting for your reaction video!!! love your videos 💗
omg i was wainting for this so bad, love your reactions. Make Musicians react more Loona videos
actually on twitter (i think) she said they're gonna marathon LOONA's solo mvs in september
I’ve been waiting for this reaction~ thank you! Been wanting to hear more music analysis-wise of this song and I feel very satisfied with this explanation~
Will be looking forward to the Musicians’ Reaction! 💙
I knew you would love this one the moment I saw it, I think Kevin would trip out on it also.
I am really looking forward to what they do, and hope they didn't already run dry on the creativity here.
Probably my favorite loona solo release. Ms wolf slayed

Literally Umus face the whole second half of this video is a mood
"What is this song?" it's a masterpiece that no one was expecting
The epilogue of the video gave me chills bc it’s the first and last members finally meeting
I ALWAYS ANTICIPATE YOUR REACTIONS TO LOONA MVs! I LOVE YOU

An insignificant but interesting tidbit: That synth break uses many of the same synths and irregular measures as a genre called Future Bass, which may have influenced this song to an extent. :D
YAAAAAS!!! ✨ I think everyone got shookt during the breakdown
Yeah, the way the verse glides into the chorus pleases me so much, and then it simulates an odd meter. Great affective writing.
That timing issue you had Umu initially sounded to me like there's a 2 beat bar (2/4) stuck in amongst the 4 beat bars (4/4), but on listening to it further, I'm convinced there could be two 3 beat bars (3/4) inserted in there. I always look forward to your loona reactions. I hope you also react to the b-side "Rosy" as well. 😊
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!!!!
Music theory seems to have a lot of maths
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOUR REACTION
listen, I'm gay but it saddens me that a lot of people view the scenes where Olivia is with another girl as gay because it's actually really symbolic of Olivia accepting and loving herself. The girl Olivia hugs is literally the part of herself that she didn't accept. the girl is literally Olivia.
ok but seriously i loved your reaction to the song like same im crying id love to see the others react to it too
Theory:
Olivia is Lucifer, the fallen angel, hinting to so many references within her MV.
These are just some theories I have heard, except parts of the last one I came up with myself!
i think THE BOYZ's recent comeback, "giddy up" would make for some rlly great reaction and analysis ! always love the videos (:
Aw, I didn't even notice you mentioned me until now! Yey! Thank you. :-) /belpita
"Hello, gayness!" **Wide smile**
YASSSS THANK YOU UMU
The time when Umu said the melody of the song hasn't change that much, then BAMM! only Olivia can gave that beat drop!
THIS VIDEO MEANS SO MUCH TO ME I LOVE YOU UMU♥️♥️♥️thank you thank you thank you
interesting thing i noticed, but i think the whistle also might follow the same notes(?) or melody as the weird muted xylophone sound in red velvet's peek-a-boo
your thoughts about their concept and not wanting them to be generic is the same as mine, i agree with you on that. period.
I’d especially recommend the official audio instead of the stage (way better quality). hope ur doing good~
Omg adding to the list?? WigggggGGGG
The chorus drop comes in on 2 instead of 1 and I love it lol
(Also I don’t why people find it so hard to pick up on that?? Either way, it’s dope)
she was dancing in the "same" place not the same but very common with choerry in sweet crazy love
"it's like she's fighting off her inner demon" sdhkfhsdkjfh noooo she IS the demon
The producer of the song is very new. It only has less than 100 followers, so it’s a good job well done for me
found the producer, it's the one that compose chaotic for OEC 😄
I saw your comment in teaser MV so I am waiting for your MV reaction.. kkkㅋㅋㅋ
* 'Hye', I think pronounced like 'hyeh' (with 'hy' like in 'hyunjin') or 'heh' (without 'y' or almost without 'y').
Aaaahh i rly luv this song 😍😍
going✈love cherry motion
the song sounds so much better sped up to 1.25 I literally can’t listen to it any other way like it’s just so much better
Btw the last chorus I saw the second line seemed to be faster than the previous 2 chorus..the line when she said “love myself, live on” or sth
Waited for this video!!!
umu
in this video, you scared me at certain parts from the sudden scream
but GODDAMNIT YOU ARE ADORABLE KNOW THAT WILL YOU uwu
The beginning of the Loona cycle came to meet the end to start a new beginning is what I got from the ending of the MV
can you react to Rosy too? its her b side track
I LOVE YOUU OLIVIA HYE THE WOLF FALLEN ANGELS GIRLS!!
SHE KILLED VIVI AND NOW SHE GOES FOR YVES!!!!! AHHHHHH!
so weird I got a Verizon commercial before this video and in the the guy was talking about family plans and he said "mix and match" and like a minute ago I was listening to LOONA girl front which was from the album "mix and match" creeepy
It would be awesome if you watch all theories and share those reactions with us. Then you will find out how creepy all of this really is!
SAME I LOVE THEIR wierdness, they seem to be building a new genre for music i mean man wow
You look SUPER confused😂😂😂😂
At the end the 1st one meets the last member, I'm obsessed with this song can't wait for the last unit and the debut 😘
Love your reactions!! 💕is there any chance you'll be reacting to the new subunit's (yyxy) mv?
Also, have you seen the leaked ot12 dance break yet from this past weekend? its INSANE adklfjhj
if there's irregular measures, it might just be easier to assign the counts (of four, assumedly) based off the dance moves :)
tbh the last three notes of the synth break sound a lot like the hook of an odd eye circle song, girl front I think? which is really cool since JinSoul, an oec member, starts rapping right afterwards, so it serves like some kind of introduction to her part. idk, might just be me though
the canned cherries and their name thoughhhh.. such a good easter egg :)
