Epson ET 8550 canvas printing. Using Epson Print Layout for an A3+ gallery wrap canvas print

- Keith Cooper looks at printing on a 13" x 19" (A3+) sheet of matte canvas with the ET-8550 EcoTank printer. Using the free Epson Print Layout software makes it easy to expand the image to allow for attaching the print to a canvas stretcher.
The print benefits from using an ICC printer profile for the canvas, in order to maximise colour accuracy and quality.

Bought this printer mostly based off of your straightforward reviews. Set it up this evening, and I'm having a lot of fun with it already. Thanks!
Excellent - glad to hear that
Thank you Keith. I guess I’m not well versed in modern photo printers. I had no idea you could print on canvas. Amazing!
Yes, but it must be canvas meant for inkjet print use. Normal artist's canvas will work very poorly.
Thanks Keith for another of your excellent video/tutorials. This is the channel to go to if you are interested in printing.
Thanks - glad they are of interest!
Very interesting the use of canvas Keith, as with how to make custom profiles with extra equipment.
Thanks - the 8550 really does benefit from custom profiles - especially with art papers
Thank you! Don’t know how I missed this video (but I did)!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes - I do find it difficult to navigate related videos here on YT. It's why I always index them in the main written reviews
Thank you very much once again. I was specifically looking for a good option regarding printing on canvas using this printer, and I was glad I found your video about it. The test print of a landscape image (a field with wild flowers) looks fantastic. Just like a Monet painting. I printed only small 4x6, next time I am in the shop, I'll buy large canvas to print it on also.
Yes it works well [if you are a fan of canvas at that size ;-) ]
@@KeithCooper The 4x6 was just for test to see how it turns out. I'll buy A3+ to print as final size. But sure, far from all images look good on canvas, just like not everyone looks good in B&W.
That A3+ canvas I use for the testing was from HP a few years ago - I do use roll canvas for larger prints - my largest to date (on 44" canvas) was about 47 feet long ;-)
@@KeithCooper That is HUGE. I'd need to build a new house for such print... 🙂

Greeting from the U.S. Great videos! Thanks
Thanks - glad they are of interest.
Keith thank you so much for the great video. I downloaded the Epson Print Layout for my Epson 8550 printer with no issues. I created a 12x12 profile however, there is no option for borderless 12x12. Is there a trick to creating a 12x12 borderless profile? Thanks
Sorry - no borderless at custom sizes...
Unfortunately this goes for every printer I've tested :-(
BTW it's a preset - (icc) profiles are purely for colour accuracy purposes
Best printer reviews on youtube! Thank you. Do you ever review models other than wide format art printers?
Thanks!
Essentially, I only look at A3+ and A2 (13"/17") desktop printers and then large format free standing ones (24"/44"/60" width)
My main reviews are the written ones (which go back over 10 years) with the videos (since last summer) being mainly supplemental to the written ones (the 8550 video is a bit of an exception, since we had web site issues)
I've not yet come across a smaller printer I'd really want to use - they are so similar and with office type functionality seem to be covered by computer review sites and the more shouty side of RUclips ;-) My attention span with small (A4) printers when looking at document feeders and wondering about pages per minute, is vanishingly small ;-)
Hello Keith,
Can you tell me where to get the canvas from please? I have the ET-8550 I will attempt to download the software for Epson print layout. I will also need the profile please.
My friends husband died earlier this year and she has a particular photo she wants on canvas so I thought I would give it a go for her. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry, but this canvas is from a huge pack I was given by HP 15 years ago when I tested a printer.
Companies in the UK I'd suggest asking are Fotospeed and PermaJet - see what they have? They are likely to have profiles too.
Thank you.
Hello Keith, just started enjoying your videos, and got myself a Et-8550. Looks like the Epson Print Layout software does not support the ET-8550. Any thick’s to get it to work on yours? Thanks.
It does work... despite what some parts of Epson say ;-)
If using a Mac make sure you've not accidentally selected the airprint version of the driver
I have videos about this.
@@KeithCooper thanks Keith. I will try harder, using a M1 Mac Studio. Ethernet connection. I will disregard the Epson website. Haha.
Keith! I got it working. For your readers. The secret is to load the ET-8550 IP device driver. This entry won’t come up for 10-15 seconds after you got to the dialogue box to choose a driver. Thanks again for the hint.
@@edmanyiu Thank you for providing a solution! I am not that technical, but is this when you install the printer? Also, do you still have the EPL software on your computer? At some point during the last 4 months, it was automatically uninstalled from mine and I am not sure when or how...
Thank you
Glad it's of interest.
All of your videos are so informative and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Can you tell me what brand/type of canvas you are using?
Thank - This one was an HP branded one from years ago. My normal choice are ones from Innova though - more usually one of the gloss/lustre ones
Keith , I am very new to the world of printing but I guess you hear that every day, Anyway i was thinking of buy this printer but after your very informative video i think you may have scared me away you review was or sounded very technical when you mentioned about the inks etc and all the different kinds of paper you need I thought god I’ll need to go to college to get some degree in photography or something but having said that i am still considering buying it,
Thanks Keith.
It's simple stuff really - I have no qualifications whatsoever in photography BTW ;-)
The technical bits are there for people who want that info, it doesn't mean you have to know them to use the printer
@@KeithCooper
Well Keith if you haven’t got any qualifications god help the rest of especially me, But yes i kind of understand what you’re saying about using the printer and the and your demonstration would suggest its a very good printer,
Thanks mate, Good job.
Hi Keith,
just installed EPL and set up my printer, all my firmware and drivers/OS are updated. Epson Print layout doesn't seem to recognise my printer when I export my image through the photoshop plug-in. A quick google search revealed that the ET-8550 is not officially supported with EPL. Do you have a magic trick that I can apply to get this to work?
Cheers
First up, the 'official' stuff is plain wrong - it works fine ;-)
Are you using a Mac? If so. you've likely got the airprint driver set
See the main [written] review
www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
Hah! You're absolutely right, thank you for the quick reply. Having loads of fun playing around with my first photo printer. Your content is beyond helpful :)@@KeithCooper
I'm trying to use EPL on MacOS Monterey (12.6.3) and despite printer driver saying it is "*AirPrint" EPL doesn't see it. Do you have by any chance any hints what may be the issue? Thank you
Yes - you should never use airprint.
See my recent ET-8500 setup video and video about NOT using Airprint
Thank you Keith. I tried printing on Canvas on my ET 8550 however, the ink ended up smiudging and smearing. Any idea on what I could correct to avoid it?
Use a different canvas...
Not meaning to be trite there, but some media does not take well to inkjet printing and no amount of changing settings will make any difference.
The canvas needs to be a type rated for inkjet use.
@@KeithCooper got it! Would you know if inkjet canvas can be painted on after printing?
I've never tried it I'm afraid - I don't see why not, but depends on the paint type...
@@KeithCooper acrylic paints. Great! Thank you so much!
Great video - thanks! Would you happen to know why there isn't an A3+ option in the 'paper size' menu? Even when I try to add a custom size, I can't take the width above 8.27"...
I don't know - there was no problem with the panoramic prints I made.
Have you selected the correct paper feed slot?
I can't find the Epson print layout software. I have windows 11 and ET-8550 I successfully downloaded the driver but cant find the software. Any help would be much appreciated.
Try downloading from different Epson regions [US/UK/EU] it is not a standard download for all printers - ignore any lists of 'printer compatibility - they are incomplete'
@@KeithCooper that worked. Many thanks
Hi Keith, This I fear is very much a beginners question, but, do you have to print profiling test sheets out on to the same paper size that you ultimately intended to print your images on or is there a minimum size you should use? Thanks in advance.
No, profiling sheets can be whatever size fits your profiling kit. I happen to have an X-Rite Isis XL spectophotometer which will take A3+ sheets. For custom profile makers A4/Letter is more common. It's the number of patches that is the important bit.
Hey thanks for your videos. I was wondering what canvas exactly you used here and what Cardstock exactly you used in the other video. The only epson card stock or Photo board i can find are 3mm and epson themselves say the printer only fits 1,3mm board. The epson board is the thinnest 3,1mm
The canvas was an HP Matte artist canvas - used because I've boxes of it from testing years ago. No other reason than I'd got some I'm afraid.
The board is Epson poster board - see the actual main [written] review for details
www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
@@KeithCooper thank you for the fast answer. I figured that the printer can take bigger media than 1,3mm but i wasn't sure about it. So your saying i can basically take any Canvas material to use and print?
The guide clips at the back may need adjusting with the board [details in the review]
No, I'm not saying any canvas... just that it worked fine [with a profile] for the particular canvas I tested ;-)
I have the Epson ET 8550 but I don’t have the Epson print Layout that you are showing. My Layout is much simpler and I can’t set The Top, Bottom, Left and Right Margins of the paper. I have a MacBook Pro with OS Catalina 10.15.7
Photoshop 23.5.5
Any solution?
Yes - install the right printer driver ;-)
It sounds as if you have accidentally installed the AirPrint driver, which is pretty much useless...
I have a video specifically covering this - search for 'airprint'
See also my full [written] 8550 review where I discuss this problem.
@@KeithCooper Thanks. I got a better menu than before, but that BLACK MENU YOU HAVE, I didn’t get. I went to the Epson site and got: ET8500_8550_1305_NA.dmg 77.1 MB

Just make sure it's not AirPrint...
Hello. I am planning to use Epson A3 size inkjet printers to print canvas in large dimensions (120cm * 70cm) because I don't have the budget to buy a sublimation plotter. Please guide me if this idea is feasible or not?
Given a 13" [A3+] printer is ~330mm wide I'm going to suggest that feasibility is low...
Could you tell me what Canvas you use, what brand. I'm also interested in it being dull.
The one here was an HP branded 380gsm 'artist matte canvas'
I have a stock of A3+ sample sheets, so it gets used for all my testing
Hi Keith.. A fabulous and comprehensive tutorial / overview set of videos. I'm setting up my ET-8550 to print on Fotospeed Fine Art Canvas - Polyester Canvas 260. Do you have a profile set up for this canvas please ?? Would it be a good place to start with the one you used in this video ?? The Canvas is 44" wide and I'm cutting this at 13" to make a maximum 44" x 13" canvas print ( or as long as the ET-8550 allows ;) ) How do I request your profiles please ?? Thanks.. David
Thanks
Check the main (written) review for media I've profiled.
However - the only (sheet) canvas I have here is an old HP one that I was sent for testing a decade ago - they sent me boxes of the stuff, so I gradually use it up for reviews. It might be similar...
Email me at Northlight if anything is of use?
Hello again Keith.
I am having trouble with the Epson print layout, it won’t recognise my printer. I’ve spoken to Epson and they say it won’t work with the ET8550 which I know by watching your video is not correct. Do you have any advice before my head explodes 🤯 many thanks
I should also say I’m in my 70’s and not super computer savvy!
What computer?
HP 15sfa1000 with windows 11
Should work just fine - but check on the DPReview printing forum [I've not used a win pc this century ;-) ].
There are 8550 users there - the place I'd ask...
www.dpreview.com/forums/1003
Hello, I was wondering where is a good place to find these canvas panels for print? Thank you.
Mine were an HP product from testing another printer years ago - they sent me boxes of the stuff. Ask a good photo paper supplier...
hey with,
thanks for the video. I'm trying to use the Epson Print layout software with my Mac and the et-8550. with windows I had no issues, but with OSX I get the message that the printer is not found.Drivers are installed, but I read in a Forum that the EPL software can not be used wirelessly wit the printer.A USB or TCP/IP connection is required with osx. Is that true? can you print wirelessly wit EPL and oSX? how to set this up? thanks for your help. :)
Well... that print I'm holding in the video was printed over wireless from my MacBook Pro :-)
Make sure it's not the Airprint version of the driver installed - that is completely useless for most things ;-)
I have the printer here for a few days yet, so I'll have a look to see if a USB connection makes any difference
@@KeithCooper I'll figure it out what the problem was. Asics found the printer and set it up as a air print device. I deleted it, I downloaded the driver for osx and installed it manually using et-8550 series driver. Now it's working. Thank you Keith! ✌️
Do you think it's possible with this printer and possibly tweaking the software to print onto either fabric or paper fed from a roll?
Fabric might work - see my info on printing on canvas. The ink might not give good results though
Roll paper - no. The printer needs to detect the trailing edge of a sheet
@@KeithCooper ah, that’s a bummer about the roll. However can you perhaps just give it a super long custom piece of paper like you did with your panorama video? Like say twice as long as your panorama print?
My goal here is with either canvas or paper to create a fairly long print that I will then stitch into a loop to be used in this sort of conveyor belt thing for an art project.
The printer needs to physically detect the end of the sheet
The max custom page length is 1200mm
I do not know of any way round this - If you want a roll printer I'm afraid you need to buy a roll printer...
@@KeithCooper ah the rabbit hole continues.
I really appreciate both your responses and your videos! Thank you!
How did you connect to the printer via epson print layout? Can you make a guide on how to do so?
It just works if you install it - download from Epson
See the main [written] 8550 review
www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
{BTW - If it doesn't find the printer and you are using a Mac -then you likely have the airprint version of the driver installed - see also in the review]
@@KeithCooper I posted on another video about this, but I think this is the answer to my problem! Going to follow that link. Thanks!
Can You please make a video explaining how to get front/back print perfectly aligned on this printer ? ( To print Playing cards for games...) Thank You !

@@KeithCooper Thank You anyway, sir.
@@KeithCooper I Just bought One thanks to Your videos. Pretend a royalty from Epson. ;)
Thanks - always appreciated!
Hello Keith, thanks for making these videos.
Long question post ahead!
For a novice like me, who's been looking out to buy a consumer level printer that can print on canvas, your videos has been very helpful.
One of my challenges has been that models are named, numbered differently in each country (or so I believe) and I am finding it hard to map the ones you refer to on the Indian website of Epson.
I am trying to identify the fundamental things to look out for in consumer level printers that can print on canvas and unfortunately Epson does not market it saying that these printers can print on canvas.
So if I went in for a EcoTank printer, that could print on Photo quality Paper, it would be a safe buy to print on canvas?
While my regular requirements (weekly 15-20 canvas prints) are of 10x8 size for photo frames and 8x6 for gallery wraps, I was also thinking on investing on an EcoTank that can print upto A3, incase I ever needed that.
Can you please help advise what are the fundamental things to look out for in my case?
For the 8550, the key features are the particular 6 inks used.
Other models may print on canvas, but I've not tested them and they will certainly benefit from a proper ICC profile for the canvas.
None will have profiles available, which means you will need a profile made for the particular type of canvas you want to use
In my personal research for a printer that can print my photos to canvas (because manufacturers do not usually say directly if the printer can do that) ... these are the best tips I’ve found- You’re going to want pigment based inks, multiple blacks, and if the printer has an “up to” thickness setting. Also, do not be as concerned about highest DPI- people will not be holding the canvas to their noses for detail. I’m sorry you’re having issues with mapping the specific printer in your country, I wish manufacturers would use the same model names and numbers everywhere 🙄
Hi , i m trying to print on canvas with my et 8550, but my image is not printed on center of the paper,is any option on Layout to printed in center of the paper
Custom page size and use EPL to print with set margins
I'm using epson print layout and I done custom size, but I the image is never in center......
Ah, I've not got an 8550 here any more, so I can't test this. I'd suggest asking on the printing forum at dpreview.com - just make sure to give additional info about system etc.
Hello, I want to buy this product, but I need a few ideas from you. Can I print on canvas fabric type from this printer? I've seen them in a few videos when I come across them. But I need to confirm so that I can buy the product. Since I am looking for a low-cost product, I am very warm to this product. I will constantly print on canvas fabric type. Do you think I should get it?
The printer works on artist canvas of the sorts shown in the video - it is a photo printer.
I don't actually know what you mean by 'canvas fabric type'? - all I tested is the canvas shown in the video.
@@KeithCooper Thank you for returning. What I mean is can I get quality output on "canvas" paper? I know it is bought in larger printers, but my budget is enough for this printer, so I wanted to ask.
What is 'canvas paper'? Do you mean paper with an embossed texture?
If it's paper meant for aqueous inkjet use then yes (with a suitable profile)
If just ordinary uncoated paper, then don't expect much
@@KeithCooper I have sent you an e-mail. Could you please read my e-mail?
How can I download this, my pc doesn’t like it
Then it's possibly your PC ... download Epson Print Layout from Epson - check the specifications listed
Hi from Greeece. I see you know many from printer. I had bought second time Epson L805 (6 ink). The quality is very good but the Head after 6-8 months is Off. Must I pay €300 again. You know in same quality printer with about same price ? Canon Pixma G550 (6 ink) is good ? Usually I print gravoure in mate paper.
I've no knowledge of any 'L' named printers - I don't really look very much at cheaper printers.
But if it's failed after six months, then what about the warranty?
The G550 is another fairly cheap printer - colour management is broken on Macs, which rules it out for me. However - it might do just fine for what you need ... but what is "gravoure in mate paper"?
@@KeithCooper I have "Epson EcoTank L805". In Greece the Epson representative not repair Head. I print small photos as Replica stamps in matt paper. I need good detail. I used Windows. Thanks.
Sure, but isn't failure that soon covered in the warranty?
The G550/650 has fairly low resolution - see my videos/articles about print resolutions.
As to windows... I've not used it this century, so can't help with any differences there ;-)
Keith, just curious to know… are you experiencing any problems printing with Epson software on Mojave or M1? Ooo just heard you say your using an older mac(?).
BTW , never printed on canvas. Ive always been concerned about being a dust magnet. Smudging when cleaning.
It prints fine, but for the matte one here, it benefits from coating.
No smudging issues...
For my own work I use a gloss finish canvas, but that's on a 24" or 44" roll - I'm testing these A3+ sheets since I've had several boxes of the stuff sitting round for years and thought it would be good to see what it looked like.
I'm running 10.14 so no issues at all - we've not had much work for over a year, so the chances of running new stuff are regrettably slim...
I'm a fan of your reviews! But some of them, like this one suffer from poor audio. My ancient ears and hearing problems cause me to not be able to follow the narration. I need to use headphones to listen. The ads that precede your video are really loud compared to your narration.
Thanks - sorry about the sound on this one, this is one of my early videos [I've only been doing them since 2020]
Unfortunately YT offers no chance to re-do sound tracks, and if the printer has gone back, I can't even re-make the video...
