  • I was looking for a photo printer that would allow me to make note cards and small prints, and I wanted something economical and easy to use. I decided on the Epson ET 8550, mainly because it's an eco-tank that uses bottled ink rather than expensive ink cartridges.

    Thank you for making this. I've been on the fence about which printer to get, and this helps a lot!

    Easy and helpful review. Thank you, from another fountain pan user. Funny story... was in the hospital and a doctor and I bonded over our pens, each of us using some of the same pens. Appreciated this review; had pretty much settled on this machine; consider your thoughts only an affirmation.

      I'm still using Staples paper. There isn't any branding on the back and it works well for what I'm doing.

    Thanks for the review! I bought an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 about 19 years ago for the same purpose as you have bought your printer for. My main complaint is that the cartridges are always running out. I will keep your recommendation in mind next time I am in the market for a printer for art. BTW, I really like seeing your paintings!

    Hello! You ever thought to buy Epson SureColor F570 Professional Edition instead? I bought Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 before couple of days (I have 30 days returning policy), still unboxed. Thinking to return it, and buy F570. I know it's more money :) BUT... What is your opinion on that? 😊 Thank you!

      I had read some reviews of it but it was beyond my budget. I am very happy with the Epson printer and I get great results. I'd recommend checking out Keith Cooper on RUclips. He does very thorough reviews of printers. www.youtube.com/@KeithCooper

    Ive been eyeing and planning to buy this photoprinter for almost a year, but in amazon us and amazon uk.. said it's in 110-120v...however when i read q &a section most customers who are in uk,who bought this printer in amazon uk, said they've directly plugged it in their homes.. (note: uk has 230v power)....Dell USA, said it supports 120-230v 50-60hz, and the Epson info of their product particularly this printer saying 110v on paper is an error. quite confuse if we can really use this in 220v 50-60hz, our country had 220v..if can someone enlighten me.. thanks in advance...

    Between this and ET7750 ?wich one the best quality printer ?
    Also i read lot of about canon IP8750 does you tray it before ?
    Thanks in advance

      The 8550 is the better one for my needs. It uses 6 inks, and I believe the 7550 uses 5, and the 8550 can print 13x19 inches, which is a bit bigger than the 7550. I wanted something that would give me a high quality reproduction, and it does. I've not tried the Canon. What I really like about eco-tanks is tha t I don't have the expense of cartridges to deal with. When I was researching printers, I watched a lot of reviews by a RUclipsr called Keith Cooper. He's very knowledgeable on the subject. ruclips.net/user/KeithCooper

    Do you have any follow-up comments? I am pondering printing 11x17 pamphlets, folded and stapled.
    Are you still happy with the printer? Would it be a pain to print 11x17?

    • @PEIPenGuy
      @PEIPenGuy  2 года назад +1

      I'm very happy with it. I haven't tried 11x17 but it should work. Biggest problem I have is that there is a paper shortage at the moment. Supply chain issues from Covid.

      @@PEIPenGuy Thanks, Pen Guy! Mine is due next week.
      I've got a Proclick punch and was planning to use it for some business proposals I'm laying out in Affinity Publisher. The spine makes the Proclick less mail-friendly, so I have a long reach stapler on the way, too.
      Assuming it works as I hope, my proposals will be on 11x17 paper, folded into a stapled booklet.
      Epson owes you a commission!

    Thanks for the review. I gave up on ink jet years ago: Have a Brother black & white laser. If I was going to get an ink jet again, an ecotank model would be the way I'd go. The silly cartridges always ended up drying out as I don't print all that often. No problem with that on the laser.

    • @PEIPenGuy
      @PEIPenGuy  2 года назад +1

      I was thinking about getting a laser printer but the cartridges are too expensive in the long run. The eco tank works very well for what I do and I think it's much more economical in the long run. If I was printing high end prints a pro quality laser printer would have been needed.

    Nice review. Every once in a while I'll want to include a photo in a letter. Invariably, the ink cartridges are dry. I'd get a color laser for the toner longevity but they are so darn expensive.
    Tonight I'm going to get another round of ink for my inkjet. I'll print most correspondence on my black and white laser, so it's time for a different tactic.
    Every morning I write a little bit, even if just doodles, with each pen I have inked. I'm going to add printing one small photo on the inkjet.
    When it's time to upgrade, I'm going to strongly consider that Epson. Bottled ink sounds way better than cartridges.

      It's nice to include photos and cards in letters, and being able to print them at home convenient. The cost of ink cartridges can be crazy!

    Colour precision does not come from the price of the printer or the use of cartridges, it needs to have a properly calibrated colour profile, you will probably find a good enough general one in the driver package from Epson, but if you one day want to go the extra mile, you can invest another $200-300 in a basic colorimeter USB gadget that is made for such things. I have one for colour correcting my monitor, and that is really the most important part of the workflow, the probably the cheapest to tune. the printer doesn't really need tuning in most cases because the ink is factory controlled, however screens may have cheap LED backlight or other issues that skew the colour over time and need the calibration. once the monitor is tuned, the software should make sure your prints come out matching the screen, and for hobbyists that's all we really need.

    • @Seefood73

      The real loss of colour accuracy is in phone cameras. most of them are really bad reproducers of colour. I don't know if it is bad hardware or software. Some of it can be corrected with third party LUTs for specific cameras maybe, or you could even install OpenCamera or a similar camera app that can safe Raw image files on most camera models and handle it in LightRoom, Photoshop or what have you.
      Finally about the paper - somewhere out there there is an ink that will triumph. maybe something more sticky like Private Reserve's Fast Dry Ultra Black.

      I have had good results with my phone camera, and I find that taking a photo on a cloudy day seems to work best. I like to use natural light.

    • @PEIPenGuy
      @PEIPenGuy  2 года назад

      I do have to adjust the image a bit, and I might take another photo to get a more accurate result. Overall I'm very happy with the results. The one I showed was the first test. What I really like about this printer is that I always know how much ink I have and the bottled ink goes a long way.

      @@PEIPenGuy cloudy or sunny or an incandescent light bulb, as long as the light source has the entire spectrum and not a few peeks of colors like LED lights. LED distort the color perception because they only emot 1,2 or 3 narrow light frequencies at best, not a linear spectrum.
