Well, also there are things to take into account about Jayne. 1) He hid and watched when Kaylee was having surgery in the first episode. The implication being that he was worried about her but didn’t want anybody to see that he has a heart. 2) He often expresses reluctance to help out and then does anyway. Same thing, he’s always there in the end, but doesn’t want anybody to know he cares. 3) He gets along well with the preacher, who wouldn’t abide a really evil man. 4) He expressed genuine sorrow that a boy sacrificed himself for him. “I don’t know why it eats at me so!” It’s because he knows he didn’t deserve it. 5) It may be that he decided to turn in River and Simon only after River attacked him with a butcher’s knife. And he had good reason to fear for everybody’s safety with her around. 6) He probably changed his mind when he saw what the Alliance had done to her. The look of horror on his face was obvious. And that’s why he suddenly wanted to leave: he was hoping to get out before the police caught them. 7) He’s obviously very uncomfortable with the praise that Simon gives him after that. Again, because he knows he doesn’t deserve it. 8) He expresses shame about what he did, and cares about what the crew thinks of him. This is why Mal spares him. 9) At the beginning of The Message we learn that he sends money home to his family and that he has a sick sibling. 10) He proudly wears an ugly hat his mother made him, which is the purest expression of love there is. There’s more, but I don’t want to talk about events that take place after this video.
Kaylee was wearing her f-me dress in the beginning of the episode with Simon. Same dress we saw her in when she was boinking the last mechanic in Out Of Gas. She was SOOOO ready, and Simon screwed it up again 😂😂😂
So in Ep 12 we do learn a bit about why Jayne is so driven by money. He cares about his family back home. One of his sisters is sick and he sends money to his mom to help care for her. So that is sweet and unexpected.
It also doesn’t excuse it, but it's why in episodes like The Train Job, where the message is "We shouldn't have stolen this medicine or accepted Niska's money!" Jayne acts so mad. What does Jayne's family get out of this? Every time they "do the right thing" rather than take a paycheck, his family suffers.
In the audiobooks he also has a brother with "Damp Lung" and I think I remember that the treatment is expensive so he needs to earn lots of money for them.
The main takeaway is that Jayne doesn't consider himself part of the crew. And he isn't, but his apologists want us as fans to treat him as part of the crew.
@@CarlosRamirez-wb7zu. Wrong! Obviously Jayne does kind of consider himself part of the crew or else he wouldn’t have risked his life to try and “rescue” Reynolds. He would’ve stayed on the ship.
People in the fandom sometimes call her 'YoSaffBridge' as we don't know her real name. Mal's comfortable in his body, he feels no need to cover up his ASSets. Love that Jayne doesn't even realise that Wash is insulting his hat.
Though given the multiple scenes of Mal's butt, it's not that surprising that this is one of the episodes that never aired. I'm honestly surprised they thought they could get away with that on broadcast television.
So the way I see it, Jayne is like a stray, half feral dog that you bring home. Sometimes he pees on stuff, and he destroys your stuff, but if you give him the care and attention that he's been lacking he can become a good doggie. When the crew meets him he's literally a criminal, not the good kind of criminal (if such a thing can be said) that the crew is; he's having to relearn how to be part of a team with moral/ethical types. You can sort of see this in the way that his in public behavior doesn't always match his in private behavior, like in the pilot episode when Kaylee is in the med bay and instead of going in there and being with her, he's hiding up above and just rocking and hoping that she'll be okay. He doesn't know how to show that concern publicly. Because he's a dumdum. After Ariel, he knows that he's done bad; that's why he asked the captain not to tell anybody what he did. He didn't know he was going to survive, but he didn't want to be remembered for that terrible thing that he did. And the crew doesn't know that he did it, only the captain does. That's why they don't know why he's being generous with his cut. But he's doing it, let's face it, out of straight up guilt. Which is progress for him. Is he always a good person who makes good decisions? No. But he's doing his best, as I see it, to stop being the trash person that, for example, "Saffron" is. Also people are totally allowed to dislike characters without getting yelled out by people online. Everybody's different and has different things that they like. For example, my person that I dislike is Inara, and people fucking love her. So ::throws up hands:: You do you, and like and dislike who and what works for you. ❤
now a want to read a paragraph or two about you're feelings on inara. her and jayne are very much the same character, though coming from different angles.
@@chrissandoval7675 actually I think you said it perfectly. The problem for me is more of an actual personal problem, which is that I really dislike spoiled rich people and so she would need to actually earn my liking of her. But the show and movie didn't give enough time for that to happen. I can understand Jayne better because he's coming from the same sort of background as the people I'm surrounded by. But with Inara I just want to yell at her to just effing go already instead of whining about being stuck on Serenity, because she's not. She can actually afford to leave. Unless there is a background issue for why she's there in the first place, but again, the series didn't last long enough for us to find out, and for everything that we've seen and will see, she's a companion in good standing. She's like the roommate who doesn't understand how privileged she has been her entire life, and doesn't want to change her lifestyle in order to meet the privilege level of where she is now living. I'm going to stop at this point, cuz honestly I didn't think I was even going to say that much, but I'm super baked and trying to make my thoughts work in a way that is grammatically correct enough for people to follow is extremely difficult.
@@ArtbyamaranthwiseBlogspot15 thanks for the response. guess we know little of inara's background was we did book's. never read the comics, but understand book's story was addressed, never heard mention of inara's. with that lack of background in mind, seems more than possible she came from a less than upstanding family, and was recruited into the companion role. took to it get out of that situation. would explain her dedication to the crew, and why she stuck around as long as she did despite the deficits. rip wash.
I love Simon’s response to Jayne’s attempted betrayal on Ariel. He recognizes that hostility towards Jayne will only undermine their effectiveness as a crew, so he chooses forgiveness. It fits perfectly with his personality.
In the context of the show, Shan Yu is a (admittedly sociopathic) writer and philosopher. The fact that Niske and Book both know of him is normal. Simon knew of him. It's like "Are you familiar with Aristotle?"
Probably more like Machiavelli or Nietzsche from the sound of it... Which is still standard philosophy but it's interesting that it would be one of a Shepard's favorites.
"The Art of War" by Sun Tzu is an ancient Chinese work on battle strategy, but in modern times its precepts are used and followed for everything from personal goals, to sports, to business.
Jayne's turn from vaguely villainous to reluctantly heroic happened when Simon was explaining to him what was done to River at the hospital on Ariel. He was supposed to let the Feds come in and bust them, but instead tried to rush them out before the cops arrived. Knowing what the Alliance did to River, exactly why she was the way she was, triggered empathy in him and he tried to reverse course on turning them in. I firmly believe Mal was going to space him until Jayne told him not to tell the crew what he did. He began to care about them and he cared about their opinions. He wanted the crew, especially Simon, to believe he died a hero. That's why Mal spared his life in the end.
I think that's a spot on read on why mal let him live. We've seen mal kick a tied up guy into an engine because he didn't like his answers. Not hard to believe the reverse would be true.
But that's not what happened. He went to were the feds were expecting them. If he was changing his mind, he would have exited where Mal wanted. But he purposefully went out of his way to go where the cops were waiting for them and lied to Simon about why. He was *still* trying to sell them out *after* he saw what they did to River.
"He tried to rush them out" simply is not true. He took them out early and out a door to where the feds were waiting because that's what he arranged with the feds. They would not have caught them otherwise. I'm not saying that learning what was done to River started to turn Jayne around, which was helped by his realizing just how bad the "hands of blue" really were and his honest shame at Simon's praise. However, he didn't reserve course; if he had, he would have offered that as an excuse to save his life.
@@happyslapsgiving5421Thank you! I don't know why people think Jayne changed his mind about turning them in just because he looked uncomfortable finding out what was done to River. The rush was because he needed to get them to the feds *before* they were due to meet up with Mal and the others, otherwise Mal would come looking. He needed to either be gone before Mal came looking or, given how he though he could bluff Mal when he had him in the airlock, the time to get back to the others and pretend he evaded capture while the feds handed the Tams off to the Blue Sun guys. He definitely would not have been out the back. Besides, if he had changed his mind, River wouldn't have reacted when Jayne told Simon that the plans had changed.
I consider Ariel to be Jayne’s turning point, personally. You would’ve let him get sucked out? A lot of people would have, and I think he knows that. It’s the wakeup call he needed.
Jayne is literally the worst but he's also hilarious which is why people like him. But he does have his glimpses if humanity they're just really subtle. Like when Kaylee got shot and he was sitting worried outside the infirmary. Or when he volunteered to help go rescue Mal when he didn't have to. Or how bad he felt for that kid that jumped in front of a bullet for him. He's still the worst most of the time but there is a lot of potential there for him to eventually get a hero moment.😊
That's how I feel, it's subtle, but it's still there. And when he asked Mal not to tell the others about what he did, it wasn't that he was worried about how they would react, it was more about concerns of what they thought of him. You can tell being part of the crew is important to him, which is why he even tried to turn River and Simon in... they were jeopardizing the crew. 👍👍
These two episodes are the main keys to why much of the Browncoats consider Jayne to be a somewhat decent person. In 'Trash' we get to see how comfortable he is now around Simon and River. Before this the only time we see him treating either of them as more than baggage is the scene in 'Out of Gas' where they're about to celebrate Simon's birthday. But in this scene he's gracious, trades good natured barbs, and even seems relaxed. Even the fact that he's worried about what the Tams will think about him if they found out about Ariel says a lot. This came around because of what Mal said to him after the Ariel heist: That while Jayne has never considered the Tams to be on the crew, Mal does. And while he often disagrees with Mal, Jayne holds him in respect. And he really did listen to and absorb what Mal told him in that airlock. In 'The Message' we get a major look into why Jayne is so mercenary minded. He sends the lion's share of the money he earns back home to his family to cover their expenses, in particular the medical bills for his sibling who suffers from 'the damp lung' (acute respiratory distress syndrome/ARDS). We've seen that Jayne's bunk on the ship is very bare bones. He puts what money he keeps for himself into weapons and gear that let him continue to make money to send home. We also are shown more closely than before that Jayne spends a lot of time talking to Shepard Book. The two of them have a very easy manner with each other that speaks to a level of comfort with each other (this also is a powerful clue about who Book likely was before he became a Shepard). All of this comes together to show us that Jayne isn't a thug. He's a frontiersman. He's what Mal very likely would be if he hadn't been through the brutality of the war or hadn't been raised backwoods wealthy (in 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' he tells Saffron his family were ranchers with a large staff and he has zero trouble fitting in at the ball in 'The Shindig' although his manner is more country than the others there). His entire being is to look after his own, much like Mal, but that Jayne's idea of who counts as 'his own' is incredibly narrow but slowly expands across the show's brief existence. He's not stupid, he just has no formal education. He's not morally bankrupt, he only considers it pointless to apply his morals to anyone outside his small circle of family. Even way back in 'The Train Job' his insistence on finishing the job while Mal and Zoe were in custody was about making sure that Nishka didn't end up coming after the rest of them for failing the job.
Not only was it the one they found out they were cancelled, it was the last episode filmed. The final scene with the family was one of the final scenes filmed. Even the composer, while writing the music for that scene, wrote it as a good-bye to the show.
These two are episodes that never aired. We only got to see them when the DVDs came out. And the scene between Simon and Jayne in TRASH instantly became GOLD.
You people are so misinformed. All the episodes were aired. After being canceled they aired the 2-hour pilot and over the summer unannounced they aired the 3 other episodes.
@@ThePharaz 'unannounced' - so, a lot of people would have missed them at the time, not knowing they were being aired and wouldn't have seen them until they got the DVD. 'Misinformed' is not the same as 'Didn't know'.
@@alexvaradereyDoesn't matter if zero people saw them. The point is they were aired. I've read in numerous comments the same misinformation about them not being aired. Just do a search for Firefly episodes wiki. You'll see the original air dates and the 3 episodes were aired in the UK :)
One of the things that makes Firefly so good is the character developement. They are complex, have mysterious back stories, at the same time we know enough to know parts. They are not good or bad, they have have issues. It makes them relatable.
Jayne is a broken man who has a hard time accepting people. He fears being attacked by people, so he lashes out preemptively. He had come to be accepted by the crew of the Firefly, so he would die for them, but didn't accept Simon and River as part of the crew until Mal convinced him.
Jayne is a valuable member of the crew. He does every dangerous job that needs to be done. He also could have turned River and Simon in at any point before this and didn't. Not until after River took a huge knife and slashed his chest for no reason and presented her as a very real threat to the crew. Which even you said was a valid point. Also, when Jayne reads the letter, we find out that Jayne wants money because he's sending it home to his mother who needs it as she is caring for Matty (presumably Jayne's brother) who is very sick with "damp lung."
Don't forget Jayne was reminded he's supposed to be the "bad guy" in Jaynestown, because bad guys don't have to feel bad when innocent people get hurt because of them.
@@rzjennings No, she cut him before that. Simon hadn't even come up with the plan to rob the hospital yet. Mal had said nobody was going to set foot on the planet, so Jayne didn't even know there would be an opportunity.
Her appearances in Firefly almost singlehandedly reinforced the hot but crazy stereotype of redhead women. Also, yes, every damn near every single man would go to that special place in hell for her.
Joss was an expert at story telling, one of his favorite writing styles is "make them cry, and afraid of what's to come. But if they laugh they will love the journey." It's how he's able to have such high drama and excitement then we just love it all because someone did a funny to add levity in a needed moment
Something else that seems to have gone unsaid is how PRECIOUS fresh produce is in the verse. If you look at how characters respond to fruit in this show it tells a lot about them.
Jayne is a flawed character. He's not a big bad, he's just not the sharpest tool in the shed. Nisko is villain. Jayne is not a villain, he's just makes bad decisions.
What hurts about this show is that its life ended too soon. It had so much potential with the characters and with the show overall. It still hits me that there was so much left untold. The Serenity movie helps wrap it up some, but not all of it. What a great bunch of characters and actors. They really deserved better.
In the episode War Stories, when the crew is gearing up to go rescue Mal, Jayne had made it clear they were "committing suicide". Yet when it was time to go, Jayne was strapped to the gills and ready to go. In Out of Gas, Jayne made sure Mal had everything possible to survive, including a spacesuit if needed. And he was remorseful after Ariel or he wouldn't have asked Mal to lie about how he died. So Jayne does care but after River slicing him with the knife, he wanted her gone and to get paid too would just be a bonus as Jayne would figure it. He actually is a great character and the ship would be poorer for his absence.
I"m a little surprised you didnt comment on the denoument of why Jayne is so mercenary. He's sending most of his money home to take care of his family. It doesn't excuse his actions but it does explain them. He's not doing it for himself. And yes, you do have the same sense of humor.
The cast were told about the series cancellation right before they filmed the scene delivering the body home. Jayne sends all of his money home to his mother to help with his sick brother. Like he tells the shepherd, people in his line of work don't live long, so he lives what he has to the fullest.
Simons scene with Jayne in episode 11 is one of my favorite scenes in the show and it's not one that really gets talked about enough. Most people, reactors included, have the same reaction of "I could never be that kind"; not realising that from Jaynes perspective, it was basically the cruelest thing that he could possibly do. The entire point was Simon being the bigger man in the situation. He straight up says "I don't have to like you; but I will never betray your trust and will always do my best to keep you safe." The entire reason that the Ariel fiasco happened; was that Jayne _could not do_ the same thing. He let his own emotions get the better of him; and he almost ended up dead twice over because of it. If anything; Jayne would want Simon to threaten him, to try and scare him into submission because that's what he's used to. To have the man he betrayed basically forgive him? That probably humbled him more than any death threat ever could, since it's outright showing "This is what you could have done, but you didn't, because you were too weak to do the right thing." (Also; not to try and "defend" Jayne because... doesn't bother me if you like him or not lol. But I think it's more accurate to say that Jayne only cares about the people he respects. He didn't respect Simon or River, and that's why he was open to turning them in; but it's why Mals speech got to him because he *does* respect Mal, and didn't realise that turning them in was a betrayal.)
Go back and watch early episodes and pay attention to how Jayne looks at Kaylee (sp?). I think he had a crush and saw the doc as emotional rival for her affections and that fueled his animosity.
During the filming of the episode Trash, naked scenes, Nathan wore a “mitten” that had a cut out of Joss Whedon’s face on it so if anyone looked down they saw Joss looking back at them. 😅
I’ve liked Adam Baldwin and (almost*) everything I’ve seen him in. I loved Chuck. The Last Ship is also great. * Adam and Morena Baccarin are both in a movie called Sands of Oblivion. Even two of my favorite actors couldn’t save that movie. 😆
I never used to think I'd have the guts to walk around naked around a load of people like Mal did, but recently I've had that experience and it was great for my confidence. We're all just people.
8:23 I love that you can see Kaylee's actress break character here, and then they have to carefully edit around her for the rest of the scene. It must've been sooooo fun to be on set for this show.
Jayne is complicated. At times he's hard to like, but if you're going to be in a fight, you want him by your side. It looked like you turned three shades of red when you saw Mal's bare butt. LOL
His name is Dwier Brown. He does a fine job as Haymer. There is no doubt that he massacred people, but he's got a genuine vulnerability for YoSaffBrig, and is genuinely concerned for her, while at the same time being suspicious enough to call the cops.
I think Jayne probably had a longer character arc that never got fully explored because of the cancellation. I think he would've either gone full heel or died a hero. Allegedly Joss told every actor one secret about their characters they weren't to tell anyone. A lot of folk have guessed that Shepard Book's was that he used to be an Alliance agent, but we'll never know now I guess. At least one such secret you'll see in the movie.
nope, go ahead & actually listen to the rest of the letter he reads out from his mom. He has a sick sibling at home that he's providing for. Literally the exact opposite of selfish & out for himself.
I saw an interview with Adam Baldwin where he talked about playing Jayne. He said he saw the character as like Eli Wallach in The Good The Bad and the Ugly, in contrast to Mal's Clint Eastwood. Jayne is a more extreme version of Mal, like what Mal would be if he didn't have his code of honor from the war. And Jayne had a rougher background, growing up on the show's version of the Frontier and doing what he had to do to survive, so his values weren't as strong, but we do slowly see him becoming a better and more selfless person as the show (and movie) go on.
@@pieceofgosa You can care for your momma and be a complete sack of no good. Jayne is a sociopath. But a GREAT character and it is OK to like him as a character. But I don't want any Jayne's in my life.
Good catch on "is he really dead?" First reactor I've seen ask that! If you rewatch where Jayne is reading the letter, his mom mentions the money he sends home to take care of his sick sibling and apparently his mom as well - it seems that Jayne may be the main or possibly sole support for his people back home. Explains why he's so obsessed with getting paid...
The phenomenon you’re referring to with the the writings of Shan or xiang Yu is called symmetry in writing. It’s just a coincidence but to the audience, it creates a theme in the episode. Also, to show that both characters are are formally educated.
Two of my favorite episodes of this series. Yo-Saf-Bridge! And, the high of Jayne's sending money home for his and the tragedy of the death of the series.(the funeral).
20:46 every female reaction to this moment has been great. it has been universally the same. giggly when he talks about her eyes then absolute disappointment when he says some dumb 💩. 🤣🤣🤣
It's such a little thing, but I love Wash's scared reaction when he sees Tracy step onto the bridge. Because yes! Of course he doesn't yet know that Tracy's alive. Nice touch, and funny.
Shan Yu is just famous. The Shepherd was quoting him at the beginning of the episode so that the bad guy could drop that line and we, the audience, would understand.
Ashley, 3 quick things: 1) After the series and the movie, Joss Whedon oversaw the production of some graphic novels that continue the story. Shepherd Book's backstory is explored in one of those. 2) The movie WILL answer most of your questions. 3) When you get done, I HIGHLY recommend you take in both the TV show and the movie blooper reels! They are a treat, will make you laugh a bunch and might even make a great reaction video.
Nathan Fillion is personally hilarious. He kept the rest of the cast and crew in stitches. See if you can find the outtakes of the burial scene. Shepherd Book is the great mystery of the series. It will be addressed in the movie.
My favorite part was when Inara mocks YoSafBridge in the dumpster. As revealed in her later conversation with Mal, she was actually LYING when she said "the whole crew" was "in on" 'tricking' Saffron! She did it entirely to knock her down a peg and make her doubt the incompetence of the crew of Serenity! Inara didn't want Saffron thinking they were "easy marks" anymore. (To "encourage" her to stay away from them.) To me, it always felt very sweet & protective of her. Like a "Don't you disrespect my family!" kind of thing. Also, (almost) everyone LOVES "the Message", but I don't. I don't "hate" it. (As I've said before, there ARE no "bad" Firefly episodes.) And I recognize that it is "high qualify", it is just. . .kind of "low" on my personal list is all. (Different strokes for different folks, I guess.)
I'm with you on "The Message". One big plot hole: how do you switch buyers when you are smuggling organs that are replacing your own? Only the original buyers have yours to put back!
When they were filming Tracy’s funeral, they already knew that Fox had pulled the plug. They loved the show and all the cast were friends and they had to fight the tears. Anyway, “Heart of Gold” is…not great but “Firefly” is like sex or pizza. Even when it’s not that good, it’s still pretty good.
The part that a lot reactors miss about Jayne in the Message because they are too busy laughing about the hat: The first part of the letter he was reading says that he sends most of his money home to his mother and sister... so he may be the worst, but he's also loyal to family. He just hasn't realized that Serenity is his family until Ariel
My take on Jayne. In Ariel Jayne sees something he's not seen before, Simon in his element. Strong, authoritative and confident. At one point you can kinda see the surprise in his face when he is dressing down the Dr who almost killed his patient. Doesn't stop his tomfoolery but i feel in the end it starts to change his perception of the Doc. Why Mal let him live? I think it's because Jayne showed he wasn't just callous, he did an awful thing but still cared how the others percieved him and asked Mal to make something up. If he hadn't shown that side, i have no doubt Mal would have spaced him. I also think that while Jayne knew the Cap well enough, he def made assumptions that Mals character was only surface deep. Think he was shocked and surprised by Mals reaction and how deeply he truly feels about his crew and doing right by them. So to summarize, the only reason Jayne is still alive is because he showed a bit of humanity and humility and Mal could see that Jayne finally understood what Mal means when he says 'crew' and that Mals morals are truly genuine.
Some of these actors have done acting in DC. Nathan has voiced Green Lantern Hal Jordan in Green Lantern First Flight and in the Green Lantern animated series. He also voiced a cowboy named Vigilante in Justice League Unlimited. Morena Baccerin voiced Black Canary in Justice League unlimited who is Green Arrow’s love interest and a meta human with a super Sonic scream. Alan played the villain Mr Nobody, in the Doom Patrol series. Gina voiced in Evil Wonder Woman called Super Woman in Justice League Crisis on Two Earths. Summer voiced Super Girl in Superman Batman Apocalypse.
@@michaelmcfarland1716 yeah I can’t to see him with the Mullet that Guy has. I hope, when a Green Lantern movie comes out, Glen Powell is Hal Jordan. Rumor is Patrick Schwarzenegger from Gen V will be the character. I prefer Glenn because his acting is better and he feels like Hal
Being close to the end of a series that really connected with you, is always difficult. I'll talk again at the end because each of us must reach that final "Firefly" moment. This is perhaps one of my top choices if defining truly great TV series. Hard to get better than this. In any case, until the next video. All the best. Cheers.
I can't fault anyone that dislikes Jayne. You're all crazy. It's definitely ok to enjoy him as well. He's valuable to the crew, he cares for his family back home and he got some great/funny/classic lines/scenes.
There is a graphic novel: “Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale” that gives a LOT of backstory on Shepherd Book; but in reverse chronological order. So you see what led him to leave the abbey and look for passage. Then you see what led him to join the abbey. And so on, peeling back layers of who he is. At each stage you *completely* reevaluate who you think he is.
Jayne is a team player as long as the money is good enough. At the end of Ariel, he sked Mal to lie about what happened. He cares what the crew thinks of him. He has a long way to go before he is a true good guy. He's a work in progress.
Jayne he is not really good or bad, he’s just simple. You can count on him to be exactly what he always is, so as long as you account for his behavior and keep that in mind, he is useful in many ways
So if you're looking for an Alan Tudyk rec movie, please consider _Death at a Funeral_ the *UK version* from 2007. It is hysterical, and his character is a particular standout.
Ignore that haters, Ash. You like or dislike whomever you wish. You liking the show is good enough for the majority of us. Keep on keepin' on! ❤ Some fun notes: 8:25 Wash's outburst was a little adlibbed and made Kaylee's actress (Jewel) laugh. 18:35 Mal's actor (Nathan) reportedly wore a sock with the director's face on it (Joss) which is why Wash and Zoe were borderline giggling. 34:31 The last scene listening to the message was filmed right after finding out the show was canceled, so they look so somber legitimately. Note that note...you have GOT to watch the outtakes for both the show and the movie. 😊
TRIVIA: The Lassiter laser pistol is a reference to E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman space-opera novels. My best guess about Book's past was that he was former Alliance military--a high-ranking officer (possibly in military intelligence).
Simon completely Simoned his moment with Kayleigh early in the episode. There was an opportunity for "If there were to be only one girl in the world, I'm glad it could be you."
Beans! Goofball. Beans! You know the thing they were just talking about? He wanted his beans. Brain was not one of the organs being transported. And Jayne sends money to his family, thats where his motivation is.
I don't agree that you will ever like Jayne. You may come to have a better understanding of why Jayne is the way he is. You may decide that you see a softer side of Jayne, but he is a very love him or leave him kind of character.
11 was a fun little episode but “saphron” getting a little karmaed comeuppance was satisfying. And you are still Kaylee. Love how much this show makes you laugh
I think there's a difference between being a good character and being a good guy.
George Costanzas agrees
There a lot of great characters who are villains.
Exactly! As a human being, I don't like Jayne at all. As a character, he's absolutely one of the best.
from wreck it ralph. zangief: just because you are bad guy doesn't mean you are bad guy.
Beans Ashleigh. Mal wanted his beans.
Beans is so cute.
Don't break her train of thought. She was focused on one thing. :P
Kaylee was wearing her f-me dress in the beginning of the episode with Simon. Same dress we saw her in when she was boinking the last mechanic in Out Of Gas. She was SOOOO ready, and Simon screwed it up again 😂😂😂
Simon is such Simon 😂
All the laughter from the characters at the end of Trash was real. Nathan Fillion apparently put a picture of Joss Whedon on his modesty sock. :)
Man oh man did that joke pay off twenty years later...
That sounds like Nathan!! Love that guy. Wish he'd leave The Rookie and do movies instead.
@@frankiek2269 I think it's also why he didn't want Mal to tell the crew he'd betrayed them when he thought he was going to die in the airlock.
"Also, I can kill you with my brain" is the last thing want to hear from a genius whose brain was experimented on 😅
I use that line all the time, & fully judge people who don’t get the reference
“I really wanted your beans.”
*Beans!!!*
Ashley: Why are y'all defending Jayne?
Us: He's part of my crew
People in the fandom sometimes call her 'YoSaffBridge' as we don't know her real name.
Mal's comfortable in his body, he feels no need to cover up his ASSets.
Love that Jayne doesn't even realise that Wash is insulting his hat.
I have a friend who calls me YoSaffBrig or Devil Woman depending on the day
Mal called her 'YoSaffBridge'.
Well shiny.
now a want to read a paragraph or two about you're feelings on inara. her and jayne are very much the same character, though coming from different angles.
I think the modern equivalent would the 48 laws of power. Some people can read it as it is, others take it way too serious.
"The Art of War" by Sun Tzu is an ancient Chinese work on battle strategy, but in modern times its precepts are used and followed for everything from personal goals, to sports, to business.
I always wonder how anyone (who has heard of the real one) doesn't instantly hear Shan Yu as Sun Tzu myself.
Hitler would be a better example only that most would think he’s horrible (book and Simon) and a few admire (niske)
"That girl gotta lot of husbands. Good for her."
Said in the best deadpan way.
I spit out my coffee laughing!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mal does have a fine butt...
That's how I always read Ariel too, Jayne seeing what happened to River sparked something in him and he tried to reverse action.
Agreed and I always thought Mal was going to do it, but changed his mind when Jayne said -Don't tell them what I did.
“literally the worst” wtf? There someone worse in *every* episode.
Yeah. And had Fox not murdered the show, we might have seen some real growth with him.
"Do you eat when there's gunfire?"
Ancient Soldier Adage: "Eat when you can, sleep when you can, hit the can when you can"
These two episodes are the main keys to why much of the Browncoats consider Jayne to be a somewhat decent person.
So the sadness at the end was genuine for the crew. They had just found out that the show had been cancelled. So everyone was actually sad.
OH DAMN I didn't know that.
The music was special for canceling the series.
Also the next ep (“Heart of Gold”) is the 3rd one that wasn’t originally aired.
@@mmattson8947 Yup. The last four episodes never aired and we first watched them on DVD. Can't wait for SERENITY!
He had come to be accepted by the crew of the Firefly, so he would die for them, but didn't accept Simon and River as part of the crew until Mal convinced him.
episode 1 he flat out told Mal he would sell them out if the money was right... hence him selling River and Simon out, the money was right.
If you listen carefully when Mal boards Serenity naked, you can hear Wash say, "I didn't know he was Jewish."
Lol
Jayne is a valuable member of the crew. He does every dangerous job that needs to be done. He also could have turned River and Simon in
at any point before this and didn't.
River slashed Jayne because she knew he was going to betray her. Which caused him to betray her.
Don't forget Jayne was reminded he's supposed to be the "bad guy" in Jaynestown, because bad guys don't have to feel bad when innocent people get hurt because of them.
she cut him because he betrayed them. I'm not convinced there's any kind of causal loop there.
@@SamHell-wr8bi No, River slashed Jayne because he was wearing a Blue Sun t-shirt.
But I believe you're right that that's why Jayne did what he did.
@@rzjennings No, she cut him before that. Simon hadn't even come up with the plan to rob the hospital yet. Mal had said nobody was going to set foot on the planet, so Jayne didn't even know there would be an opportunity.
Not sure if you would have recognized Christina Hendricks. The woman is utterly radiant.
She's got a nice pair of fun bags too.
But if they laugh they will love the journey."
It's how he's able to have such high drama and excitement then we just love it all because someone did a funny to add levity in a needed moment
People often forget that Joss Whedon was one of the screenwriters for Toy Story.
The confidence as Mal walks onto the ship butt naked gets me every time. That's truly a man of absolutely no shame!
We can talk about Shepherd Book, after Serenity.
I think Serenity DOES answer the truth about Book. You only have to think about it. "The Agent" could have been the way he used to be.
24:45 In a prolonged engagement, you eat whenever the opportunity arises. First rule of the PBI, never miss an opportunity to eat, shit or sleep.
YoSaffBridge is at the very upper limit of the crazy/hot scale.
That probably humbled him more than any death threat ever could, since it's outright showing "This is what you could have done, but you didn't, because you were too weak to do the right thing."
(Also; not to try and "defend" Jayne because... doesn't bother me if you like him or not lol. But I think it's more accurate to say that Jayne only cares about the people he respects. He didn't respect Simon or River, and that's why he was open to turning them in; but it's why Mals speech got to him because he *does* respect Mal, and didn't realise that turning them in was a betrayal.)
well good on Simon for doing wha most could not. Good on Captain for doing what most could not.
Go back and watch early episodes and pay attention to how Jayne looks at Kaylee (sp?). I think he had a crush and saw the doc as emotional rival for her affections and that fueled his animosity.
Also, I think he kind of sees her like a little sister because he doesn't think he's good enough@@richardedgerton1852
Nah, Jayne sees Kaylee as a little sister.
I reckon you got it right. I always thought that way too.
15:56 if you watch Saffron closely here, you can see her take Mal's pistol. It's quite subtle, but unmistakable once you see it
Very impressed they actually did that rather than just have the pistol appear in YSB's hand -- like many shows would have done.
During the filming of the episode Trash, naked scenes, Nathan wore a “mitten” that had a cut out of Joss Whedon’s face on it so if anyone looked down they saw Joss looking back at them. 😅
need to see Adam Baldwin as Casey in "Chuck"
Chuck is such a fun show, I'd love to see some reactions to it.
Agree, Ashleigh would LOVE that show!
It's too long for her to take on the series. But maybe the first couple of episodes? Treat it like a pilot movie.
YES
I’ve liked Adam Baldwin and (almost*) everything I’ve seen him in. I loved Chuck. The Last Ship is also great.
* Adam and Morena Baccarin are both in a movie called Sands of Oblivion. Even two of my favorite actors couldn’t save that movie. 😆
I think the "wobbly headed doll" scene is one of the funniest comedic scenes in all of television...
People LOVE thoae!!
LOL
Yolanda’s husband is the same actor that played Ray Kinsella’s father in Field of Dreams.
I always thought so too.
Jayne is a great character in the show, but you have him pegged, you are absolutely right.
nope, go ahead & actually listen to the rest of the letter he reads out from his mom.
@@pieceofgosa no, she is right about Jayne, he would backstab anyone for enough money, and has already proved that

Trash is my favorite episode of the show. It's the episode where I really understood that I fell in love with Firefly.
I have a Jayne Cobb hat. My daughter made it for me. It is lovely and fun.
Every time I see Trash I am struck by just how seriously fantastic Nathan Fillion's ass is.
The phenomenon you’re referring to with the the writings of Shan or xiang Yu is called symmetry in writing. It’s just a coincidence but to the audience, it creates a theme in the episode. Also, to show that both characters are are formally educated.
“My food is problematic…”
Lol.
Juliard. The man went to Juliard to eventually voice Hei Hei the chicken in Moana. 😂
Shan Yu is just famous. The Shepherd was quoting him at the beginning of the episode so that the bad guy could drop that line and we, the audience, would understand.
Ashley, 3 quick things:
1) After the series and the movie, Joss Whedon oversaw the production of some graphic novels that continue the story.
I love that one, how many times can Nathan appear in one continuous cut? 😂
(To "encourage" her to stay away from them.)
To me, it always felt very sweet & protective of her.
The crew WERE in on it. Inara was their back-up plan in case things went something like they did.
I don't care for "The Message" either. That and "Heart of Gold" are at the bottom of my list.
"No son, you murdered yourself. I just carried the bullet a while." THIS LINE HITS SO HARD!
"There are so many answers that I need" yup, I have been feeling like that since 2002
Apparently, Mal DID cover his junk on that end scene in Trash. We don't see it, but he actually had a photo of Joss Whedon there as a cover up.
24:45 The line was, "I really wanted your beans". Ashleigh, Mal wants to adopt your cat!
I still can't believe she hasn't figured out Inara is Deadpool's girlfriend.
The part that a lot reactors miss about Jayne in the Message because they are too busy laughing about the hat:
The first part of the letter he was reading says that he sends most of his money home to his mother and sister... so he may be the worst, but he's also loyal to family.
I'll never stop being tickled by how some people react to a full booty shot. 😆
You are not wrong about this having so many parts to finish. Now you know why so many of us have been wanting more.
If reports are true, Nathan will be portraying Guy Gardner in James Gunn's Superman
Jayne is my daughter’s favorite character. She had a hat made that he received from his mom and named her dog after him
ASHLEIGH: That was such a fun, lighthearted episode!
ME: **knows which episode comes next** Oh, darlin'...I am so sorry for what's about to happen.
We're al wincing a little.
Being close to the end of a series that really connected with you, is always difficult. I'll talk again at the end because each of us must reach that final "Firefly" moment.
This is perhaps one of my top choices if defining truly great TV series. Hard to get better than this.
In any case, until the next video.
All the best.
Cheers.
Ashleigh legit just said "atmo" in a sentence. Report to Haven for your brown coat!
I can't fault anyone that dislikes Jayne. You're all crazy. It's definitely ok to enjoy him as well. He's valuable to the crew, he cares for his family back home and he got some great/funny/classic lines/scenes.
Jayne is a fun character to hate which I think we need someone like that on the show helps make a diverse cast of characters.
I think a big part of the situation is simply that Jayne doesn't consider Simon and River part of the crew.
@@michaelhoward142 reinforced when River opened his chest in front of the whole crew
Can’t wait for you to see the movie!! Omg the reactions you’re gonna have are gonna be crazy to see from the perspective of having already seen it
You're looking for Firefly 1x7 "Jaynestown" I mean yes he is a flat out criminal but he isn't a sociopath. He does feel it when good people die.
It is hysterical, and his character is a particular standout.
oh god please yes....he was hilarious in that. Ashleigh would love it!
Ignore that haters, Ash. You like or dislike whomever you wish. You liking the show is good enough for the majority of us. Keep on keepin' on! ❤
Some fun notes:
8:25 Wash's outburst was a little adlibbed and made Kaylee's actress (Jewel) laugh.
As a rule I do tend to call the authorities on someone who attacks me with a knife.
Yeah she kinda cut him that morning lol
Might depend on why they did it, but yeah.
Incidentally, we all now know River could have made that knife attack fatal.
TRIVIA: The Lassiter laser pistol is a reference to E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman space-opera novels.
My best guess about Book's past was that he was former Alliance military--a high-ranking officer (possibly in military intelligence).
24:50 He said "Beans".
I am so happy to see YoSaffBrig again. Gingers are my Kryptonite.
"The Message"
Ashleigh gonna cry today!😢
Simon completely Simoned his moment with Kayleigh early in the episode. There was an opportunity for "If there were to be only one girl in the world, I'm glad it could be you."
Beans! Goofball. Beans! You know the thing they were just talking about? He wanted his beans. Brain was not one of the organs being transported. And Jayne sends money to his family, thats where his motivation is.
If the series would have continued, having a YoSafBridge episode once a year would have been GREAT.
We got two of them in a half season! We would've probably gotten her 3 or 4 times a season! But, once probably would have been enough.
Please watch "Serenity" on a bigger screen! You will thank us for it! 🙂
These two episodes perfectly capture why Firefly is so great
I don't agree that you will ever like Jayne.
Simon and Kaylee, one step forward, one foot in mouth.
The fact that he can get such an emotional response even though it is negative makes him a good character.
"wanted your beans"
Episode 12 always reminds me to bring up the blooper reel once you've watched everything.
