My professor who I had for an online class was the kindest and most understanding professor. My dog passed away and the. 2 weeks later my childhood best friend passed away. I thought he would think I was lying cause I was behind on my assignments but he believed me and I made up everything within time. That was one of the hardest times for me and he was so understanding. I found out he passed way this year and I was going to take another class with him but in person and I was excited to have him again. He was sick with cancer and still was working cause he loved to teach.

A High School teacher is literally evaluated based on the grades their students receive, and if they fail it is usually the teacher who gets blamed for not working hard enough. In college, you've already paid your tuition. Nobody, including the teachers, gives a shit if you want to not do any work and fail out. Because you already paid them and you're not getting a refund lol

Also, by your junior year - you're on a first name basis with half your professors.

My mother made a complaint to the principal and she told my mom that if I "planned on having an emotional outburst, I should have excused myself". We're talking about a school that banned bathroom breaks during class time, but sure, my teacher who thought I shouldn't have even been crying would have totally let me step into the hall to cry.
I saw something like this happen in middle school, i was in 6th grade and it was during the last week, usually it’s known as fun week. I was in a classroom and we were going to do something maybe crafting, anyways this one girl was crying because a close family member was in the hospital. The teacher said she’s disrupting the class, which is when she told everyone that a family member is in the hospital, no one asked who. All of us felt bad for her but the teacher, all students were trying to confort her or talk gently. Since she was still crying loudly she had to go to the office. A rumor happen where apparently this family member didn’t make it. I feel horrible that she entered 7th grade with this news, thankfully overtime she got better though.

seriously. Sat in math class and my mom tried calling me to tell me my uncle had passed... I refused to pick up and told her to text me. I read it and kinda just lost all will to work on the math work. The teacher asked me why I wasn't doing my work and I said "My uncle died" and she said "I am so sorry but that is not an excuse" I responded with and showed her my phone "I found out he died.. 5 minutes ago" and her face turned as she realised this wasn't 2 weeks ago or yesterday it was very much a current emotional event.
Once in high school I found out my best friend's dad died. I got a B- on a math test because I was processing it and had to wait to comfort her. She was a year older and in college. My teacher offered to let me retake the test despite it not being a particularly bad grade. She even asked if I was okay. At the time I had the highest grade in the class so getting a B- had never happened. My mom called to tell me in my independent study class, which I had in a room with a school phone.
High school is accurate 😂😂 in my junior year, we had a family death late in the summer, and there had to be an investigation on it because it was was infant death, so the funeral had to be postponed for the autopsy. On the first day of school, I had to explain to all of my teachers that I'd have to miss a day that week. All of them were super supportive and totally okay with it since it was just the first week of school, but my biology teacher wasn't having it at all. She told me there was absolutely no excuse to miss school during the first week, and I just gave her a blank stare and said "My niece died. I'm going to her funeral. Is your class more important than going to my infant niece's funeral?" She shut up after that and didn't have anything else to say

I had her for animal behavior for first period and biology later in the day. I was grieving and her saying that just made me snap for a second. Just graduated with a BS in biology. Some classes don't even require or keep track of attendance, some will penalize your final grade after a certain number of unexcused absences. Most of my biology classes don't offer make up exams under any circumstances even with a doctor's note or death certificate etc, you just get a zero. Finals is just a whole biohazard, so many people forced to come in and take exams while sick, coughing, sneezing, and sniffling the whole time. Shits fucked

In HS the lady that dealt with absents was like "If someone in your family dies I'm gonna need a written note from your guardian about who died, PROOF OF THE OBITUARY FROM THE NEWSPAPER, COPY OF THE DEATH CERTIFICATE AND THEN YOU CAN MISS 2 DAYS" WTF, oh and then she like "If you can't get the obituary right away I get news papers everyday, you can look for it in my office" Like my mom died my 8th grade year and I witnessed her die in front of me (it was in the hospital, she was in a comma) step dad only let me miss a day (she died on a Saturday) so Tuesday I was back and teachers over heard me talking to someone that why I missed the day before was because my mom just died and I was immediately rushed to the consuler office so that they could make sure I was okay and everything, because of how my family is we didn't even do a obituary in the paper, it took us months to get a copy of the death certificate because since my mom oringally had prime custody of me and shared with my dad every other weekend, he then got full custody of me but all my school paperwork had to be switched from mom to him since she typically dealt with my school stuff so we needed a copy of it but my mom's funeral was litterally a week after her passing so had I been in HS I would of been basically fucked and in no way would I of missed my mother's funeral over fucking school at 13 Oh an this happened in December 2 weeks before Christmas break so you know that was fun I would of punched the lady in HS if my mom had died just a year later and she asked me for all that, I know some ppl who just didn't care and missed school for funerals because yeah they shouldn't need approval for something personal outside of school, oh well we missed school, school is litterally such a small part of our lives once we graduate that yeah we shouldn't have to prioritize family DEATH over school work

I only have 3 hours to myself every week but that’s on 12am-3am on a Monday. My teacher literally told me that my education is more important than my family’s HEALTH and how I’m feeling right now. My father passed away on the last day of winter break and I took off the next week for funeral arrangements and general grieving. On my first day back from school, the teacher's assistant from my class came up to me and said "Well, I hope you enjoyed your extended winter break! I hope you know that while you've been doing nothing, your classmates have been working very hard because they actually value their education!" My teacher, who was on the other side of the room, actually YELLED at his TA "SANDY, WILL YOU PLEASE STEP OUT INTO THE HALL WITH ME!" I guess the TA hadn't heard about my dad, or maybe she did and was just a bitch. Anyways, she was transfered to another class and I made up all of the work I missed in just three days.

The difference between high school and college is spot on. High School Teachers: You can NEVER be late they will lock you out of class. Professors do NOT take late assignments. You need to manage your time PERFECTLY. No I can't give you more time for this assignment, you wont get extensions in college. I knew a girl in HS who snapped her ankle and it actually took 2 years to heal because our school wouldn't let her miss school for surgery or even let her use the one elevator we had and we had a bunch of stairs so she had to do surgery in the summer and then still recover so for 2 years she was on crutches
Honestly, depending on timing, it really isn't. If you hurt your ankle and are at the doctor getting it checked out, that makes sense. If you sprain your ankle and you just don't show up until it's healed, that's a different story. Of course you probably won't participate in gym, but outside of that or you being at the doctor, I don't see any reason to miss school for it.
My grandma passed on a school night and I went to school the next day (I wasn't too affected considering she had died in front of me three whole times so I was desensitized to it), and my teacher started yelling at me because I didn't do my homework, as I was comforting my grandpa, and then I remembered she did the same thing to my girlfriend, so I said loudly in front of the entire class that my grandma had died and she looked at me in disbelief, and said that she was sure I was lying. Then I brought the funeral pamphlet to school and set it on her desk and said again in front of the entire class that I had to go to her funeral and therefore couldn't do the weekend homework. Then I reported her to the principal and she was put on mandatory unpaid leave for a week. It felt nice to get revenge on her, and I was greiving, just not in an extreme way, you know? Also the funeral was on a weekend so there was no need for me to do the pamphlet thing, I just didn't have time with the funeral and also didn't want her getting away with how she hurt my girlfriend.
Dude I was in speech class in college and warned my professor that my dog was getting surgery and I had a really bad feeling. My baby ended up passing away and he told me how sorry he was and that I have tons of time to work on the final. I just did it that day because I was too in my head and I think he gave me extra credit. Really appreciated that man

I actually had an Econ/Government teacher (he taught both HS and College classes) that *EVERYONE* loved. He terrified me a bit, but he was actually amazing. So many people would go to him to vent or to just hang out with him when they were having a breakdown, and he was the combo of a HS and College teacher reactions. He listened to them and gave advice, but he admitted he didn't expect it one bit and sometimes gave advice just to get them out of his room so he could go home lmao

I was in a classroom and we were going to do something maybe crafting, anyways this one girl was crying because a close family member was in the hospital. The teacher said she’s disrupting the class, which is when she told everyone that a family member is in the hospital, no one asked who. All of us felt bad for her but the teacher, all students were trying to confort her or talk gently. Since she was still crying loudly she had to go to the office. A rumor happen where apparently this family member didn’t make it. I feel horrible that she entered 7th grade with this news, thankfully overtime she got better though.

I was once slapped across the face and punched in the stomach by someone in school and when I told their teacher I was yelled at for tattling and not telling our teacher.

Once in high school I found out my best friend's dad died. I got a B- on a math test because I was processing it and had to wait to comfort her. She was a year older and in college. My teacher offered to let me retake the test despite it not being a particularly bad grade. She even asked if I was okay. At the time I had the highest grade in the class so getting a B- had never happened. My mom called to tell me in my independent study class, which I had in a room with a school phone.

High school is accurate 😂😂 in my junior year, we had a family death late in the summer, and there had to be an investigation on it because it was was infant death, so the funeral had to be postponed for the autopsy. On the first day of school, I had to explain to all of my teachers that I'd have to miss a day that week. All of them were super supportive and totally okay with it since it was just the first week of school, but my biology teacher wasn't having it at all. She told me there was absolutely no excuse to miss school during the first week, and I just gave her a blank stare and said "My niece died. I'm going to her funeral. Is your class more important than going to my infant niece's funeral?" She shut up after that and didn't have anything else to say

I had her for animal behavior for first period and biology later in the day. I was grieving and her saying that just made me snap for a second. I wasn't the type to catch an attitude with teachers, but if they pushed me far enough, I did, and she just happened to set me off quicker than teachers in the past did

Just graduated with a BS in biology. Some classes don't even require or keep track of attendance, some will penalize your final grade after a certain number of unexcused absences. Most of my biology classes don't offer make up exams under any circumstances even with a doctor's note or death certificate etc, you just get a zero. Finals is just a whole biohazard, so many people forced to come in and take exams while sick, coughing, sneezing, and sniffling the whole time. Shits fucked

Like my mom died my 8th grade year and I witnessed her die in front of me (it was in the hospital, she was in a comma) step dad only let me miss a day (she died on a Saturday) so Tuesday I was back and teachers over heard me talking to someone that why I missed the day before was because my mom just died and I was immediately rushed to the consuler office so that they could make sure I was okay and everything, because of how my family is we didn't even do a obituary in the paper, it took us months to get a copy of the death certificate because since my mom oringally had prime custody of me and shared with my dad every other weekend, he then got full custody of me but all my school paperwork had to be switched from mom to him since she typically dealt with my school stuff so we needed a copy of it but my mom's funeral was litterally a week after her passing so had I been in HS I would of been basically fucked and in no way would I of missed my mother's funeral over fucking school at 13

Highschool was spot on. My grandma died and I was up till like midnight that night and I had no internet to do my homework so the next day my teacher was like "you really need to do better". I didn't tell her a family member died, I just said there was a family emergency. My mom had to email her to tell her to give me a break. I feel like just saying a family emergency happened should be enough of a reason for something not getting done.

My father passed away on the last day of winter break and I took off the next week for funeral arrangements and general grieving. On my first day back from school, the teacher's assistant from my class came up to me and said "Well, I hope you enjoyed your extended winter break! I hope you know that while you've been doing nothing, your classmates have been working very hard because they actually value their education!" My teacher, who was on the other side of the room, actually YELLED at his TA "SANDY, WILL YOU PLEASE STEP OUT INTO THE HALL WITH ME!" I guess the TA hadn't heard about my dad, or maybe she did and was just a bitch. Anyways, she was transfered to another class and I made up all of the work I missed in just three days.

The high school one is spot on. My step dad died at the table on Thanksgiving my senior year, and my physics teacher said it wasn't an excuse for my homework not being done.
I got told in highschool that "Spraining your ankle is no reason to skip school"
I knew a girl in HS who snapped her ankle and it actually took 2 years to heal because our school wouldn't let her miss school for surgery or even let her use the one elevator we had and we had a bunch of stairs so she had to do surgery in the summer and then still recover so for 2 years she was on crutches
Honestly, depending on timing, it really isn't. If you hurt your ankle and are at the doctor getting it checked out, that makes sense. If you sprain your ankle and you just don't show up until it's healed, that's a different story. Of course you probably won't participate in gym, but outside of that or you being at the doctor, I don't see any reason to miss school for it.

My grandma passed on a school night and I went to school the next day (I wasn't too affected considering she had died in front of me three whole times so I was desensitized to it), and my teacher started yelling at me because I didn't do my homework, as I was comforting my grandpa, and then I remembered she did the same thing to my girlfriend, so I said loudly in front of the entire class that my grandma had died and she looked at me in disbelief, and said that she was sure I was lying. Then I brought the funeral pamphlet to school and set it on her desk and said again in front of the entire class that I had to go to her funeral and therefore couldn't do the weekend homework. Then I reported her to the principal and she was put on mandatory unpaid leave for a week.
It felt nice to get revenge on her, and I was greiving, just not in an extreme way, you know?
Also the funeral was on a weekend so there was no need for me to do the pamphlet thing, I just didn't have time with the funeral and also didn't want her getting away with how she hurt my girlfriend.

So many people would go to him to vent or to just hang out with him when they were having a breakdown, and he was the combo of a HS and College teacher reactions. He listened to them and gave advice, but he admitted he didn't expect it one bit and sometimes gave advice just to get them out of his room so he could go home lmao

You joke about this but in high school (matric) I was pulled out of a physics practical to be lectured for 30 min by the principal because my uncle had died of cancer and I missed the Friday before so we could travel to be there for the funeral. Her exact words were "well, that's rather convenient timing." 🙄

When asked, I told her that I was missing a physics practical, and she replied "well you should have thought about that".
