In the heart of Maharashtra's Western Ghats, the Andhra Lake Wind Farm, established in 2009, stands as a stark example of the clash between renewable energy aspirations and biodiversity preservation. With 133 turbines sprawled across 194 hectares, the project encroaches upon the buffer zone of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, a biodiversity hotspot and home to diverse flora and fauna, including the iconic Indian giant squirrel. Despite regulations, the wind farm's construction led to the destruction of crucial habitats, triggering concerns among tribal communities, ecologists, and activists. While India pursues ambitious renewable energy goals, the Andhra Lake Wind Farm underscores the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions that prioritize biodiversity conservation.
