Thank you USMB for playing this Wagner overture, it's a great piece. When I was a university student in Puerto Rico, I played in the university band Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Franz Lehar's Merry Widow suite.
What an astonishing accomplishment. In listening I quite forgot this wasn't being played by a symphony orchestra. A credit to any musical assembly and especially to the US Marines. Top marks. Surely this must set a new standard for classics scored for the brass band.
This is not a brass band, but a concert band or symphonic wind ensemble, as the presence of the woodwinds attests to. Also, they do not use the traditional conical bore brass instruments that the brass bands do, except for a few instances, like when they have the trumpets play cornets.
Thanks and ouch - naughty of me not taking enough care to differentiate. Nevertheless the ensemble by whatever categorization doesn't dim my opinion of the result. BTW - I wonder how many other works from the classical repertoire would go with similar treatment from these performers?
@@grizzlyganymede. Pretty much anything can be transcribed for band, depending on the listener’s willingness to adjust their musical sensibilities. In general, some pieces work much better than others. Old overtures such as this one, usually work very well.
Fantastic. I've heard this at the opera house not played this well. Great control and shape. We were playing this in high school in the late 60's, not this well, but playing it. Seems now it's mostly Pirates of the Caribbean.
The next time Jason K. Fettig conducts this piece by these fantastic musicians, I'm going to hear it in person if I have to hitch hike to Washington to do so! Remarkable! Especially kudos to Master Sgt. Donald Patterson for a positively BRILLiant transcription! A good many highly-rated, professional orchestras have presented this less well . . Superb!
Yes we did. I was a tuba player and we had great players all around. Cleranets were awesome and our brass was very good. The director always left the door open so the rest of the school could hear. Just good memories of this type of music. I'm a fan of SRV, Rush, Who, Allman Brothers...but also Bach, Wagner, and John Phillip Susa. Tuba/bass strong!
@@johnwebb6113 and unless he was already retired and out by the time of this recording, one of my grad student clarinet teachers in college, Chuck Willett, was playing also. His contribution to that golden clarinet sound was present for a long time .
Remember playing this at Lee High School in late 70's. Melvin Meads directed. We were almost this good. Good memories. #1 at Grand Old Opery in Nashville Tennessee.
John Webb No one and not even Lee High school is almost this good hehe! These guys have advanced degrees in music performance and seriously doubt Lee High School could occupy the same stage with this ensemble. Nice try though.
Ha! I am 70 years old and I played this in high school concert band (trombone). I still remember it well. I am grateful that we played band arrangements of the classics instead of purpose written band music - it gave me a life-long appreciation for the great composers.
To be truthful, I think this band could have been a lot better in this performance. A glockenspiel would have helped to accentuate the brass in their main themes, And perhaps better microphone set ups or technician recording would have made it better
Have you listened in headphones -- and not just laptop or TV speakers? Try it. I bet you'll like it better. BTW, I've been in the percussion section (of an actual orchestra) playing this and I don't remember there being a glockenspiel part .. probably wouldn't be very Wagner-esque. I could be wrong.
Though I've used glockenspiel to add a touch of sparkle at times, I chose to stay with the original brass in this work in order to keep Wagner's original color. TBH, it just isn't needed here.
Please explain in detail what is so bad about this. These are musicians far beyond your capabilities. A conductor who is a master interpreter. So please…tell me…..what is so bad about this? And please include details. Tell us exactly why this is so bad.

I do wonder if they know that Richard Wagner was the favorite composer of the Third Reich, and a personal favorite of Adolf Hitler? nonetheless, the overture was well arranged, and well played also.

One of his favorites. Hitler also loved Beethoven's 3rd and 9th Symphonies. Rienzi was also a favorite of his. It details a Italian hero who tried to unite Italy. The nobles revolted against him, and the people turned on him, and murdered him and his sister. It was very similar to the Mussolini story.

Played this in my Community College Band back in the day. This is such a marvelous interpretation and performance of this work!
Brilliant! The best overture that Richard Wagner ever composed, played by the best brass band in the USA. Sincere thanks.
It isn’t a brass band, it is a concert band.
@@ivanderui9586. Difference in terminology. In the US, this is a concert band. I the UK, it’s often called a brass band.

Always prefer the overall sound of a Brass Band, but this performance is excellent. Tempo's, dynamics and thoroughly musical from beginning to end.

BRAVO!!!!!

Most likely the very fine Victor Grabel arrangement. This one was done in 1999 and is in the original key of D.
I really like the timpani part of this piece
