backward opposing tread design? replacing 22-year-old Dunlop k177 Tire with Dunlop 404, mistake?

I'm replacing a 22-year-old Dunlop k177 with a Dunlop 404, I noticed that they have opposite tread direction rotation on the tire . as I slide the tire with it standing still this does not seem to make sense for stability reasons on a motorcycle. the old tread pattern rotation makes more sense, what do you guys think and what do your tires say?
