I used to sing this time my daughter over the phone from Iraq. So many mixed emotions from this song. I have a recording of her when she was around 3 strumming a toy guitar while singing this for me. Another song by Pink Floyd that hits differently now that I'm older is "Time" whether you react to it or not, it's worth a listen. It's off of Dark Side of the Moon, which is one of the best-selling albums of all time.
To understand what the song is about, it helps to know that the album "Wish You Were Here" was dedicated to a former band member Syd Barrett. Between drug abuse and mental illness, Barrett had become unable to continue in the band. Much of the album consists of contemplative instrumental pieces best listened to in the dark, where the music can conjure images from your own imagination. In any case, the song is a sincere wish to their friend that they wish he was still around.
When the band was wrapping up on the final day in Abbey Road Studios, Barrett happened to stroll into the engineering room. He was completely unrecognisable at first. The band members were looking and asking one another who the stranger was, and they eventually realised it was Syd. Such a strange coincidence that the album was largely about Syd's absence in their lives.
I went to Vietnam 20 years ago and played this song at the location of where my dad was killed in action, now 54 years ago on November 20th. It means so much to me. I really appreciate you reacting to it.
There are so many songs by Pink Floyd that are so haunting, so well written, both musically and lyrically, that they captivate a whole new generation from the first moment of listening to them. They are in a class by themselves, as far as I'm concerned.
Yea, singing the same note in unison with his lead. George Benson's, "On Broadway", was the first time I heard it done. It does create a very unique result. Peace
A) mad respect for even knowing (at your age) what a vocoder is. I was already impressed with your ability to recognize different (mostly guitar) effects. B) naw, thats just Dave singing while playing the guitar part simultaneously. Ive heard very few bands that I'd label as "perfect". Taking their time and making albums that stand on their own as works of art. Primarily Pink Floyd and TOOL. Some other bands that are close, but fall just short of that "perfect" level would be; Jethro Tull, The Doors, Rush, Queen, Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult. Those are the classic era bands that reached, but didnt quitebhit on all the different levels of TOOL/Floyd. Its their completeness, all around attention to detail that sets them apart. Then there's The Grateful Dead, a whole nother class of "perfection" where the perfection comes from chaos. But that's a different story. Nowadays we got the eternal fire that is Metallica. Just another genre of music that stands on its own. TOOL is Pink Floyd for the new millennium. 🤟🧙♂️🤟 Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
This is my very favorite Pink Floyd song. Thanks for jumping back to them!! If you take a look at their Pulse concert, you probably can find the live version on there. From what I understand, lives rarely get copyrighted or blocked. Just a thought!
See, I started listening to Pink Floyd when I was 10 working on an engine and suspension of a '73 Charger with my dad. This was circa 1991. It was in a cold garage in very, very southern Maryland. I was greasing ball bearings on the breaks, learning to drink black coffee, and when we weren't listening to music, we were listening to football games on the radio. I have so many fond memories of music exactly like this.
Has there ever been a deeper lyric in rock than "Did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage"? If so I can't think of it at the moment (and it was probably another Waters line).
This song is simply the band's lament over the loss of Syd Barrett, they not only lost a bandmate to the excess of LSD use, but lost their friend, as well as his musical talents. 💎💎💎 Shine on you crazy diamond. 💎💎💎
Pink Floyd has been my favorite band since I was a teen (a looooong time ago). David Gilmour's guitar might as well be another member of the band, as far as I'm concerned. The way he can make his guitar just rip emotions out of you is something I've never experienced in another artist. My ex hated them. He said the solos went on too long and never went anywhere. But those slow solos (you said it exactly right, they take their time) they take you somewhere, step by step. You can't rush them. This song gets to me especially, they miss their friend. I think everyone can relate to that. There's someone in your life who you love, and they're gone now. They miss Syd.
I'd agree that "we're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl, year after year," is probably the most powerful stand alone line. The song is really a lament for a friend who lost his mind, but it can and has meant many things to many people over the years. Just a cool, laid back tune with some pretty dark lyrics. As with most Floyd songs, this is part of an over all album concept.
My brother took his own life. I wish I could have rescued him. You know the rest of the story. The song says it all. I really wish he hadn’t done that. I really, REALLY wish he never had to feel the way he did right before he did it. Some people think they know what “BAD” feels like. Do they really?? (We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year. -->> ) We had the same mother, and we were the only two people on the planet who knew what that meant. As for the fish bowl… the water, no one will ever know what it tastes like or if it makes your eyes cloudy and stings. No one else has been in the water you swim in. What you see when you look through glass at the outside world is through that water may not be what the world looks like to other people. And people can stare at you through the glass and talk at you all day long, but sometimes the words sound garbled through the water and the glass. And you swim in circles because you are not in an ocean where you can swim in a straight line. Where you can see all kinds of different things. We were sort of in the same fish bowl. Then he decided to take a vacation (drugs). That seemed to work, so he did it again. Then again. Then the “walk on part in a war..” turned into ..”a lead role in a cage”. He traded difficult for impossible. Then he left. Moral of the story: Try not to take “Vacations”. They aren’t an ocean of freedom where you get to swim in a straight line. They are a mirage. Then you really get stuck, chasing your tale, really fast. And you will lose. And your kids will be sad and pissed. And your sister may wish she could have smacked you in the head to snap you out of it. TELL YOUR SISTER BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING STUPID. (Or brother, or friend) You just want to feel better, that’s all. Don’t leave. Suicide is a bad idea.
You should be a writer. You made me cry. This hit in the deeper level that most people don't want to face. Thank you for your powerful words. I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost people this way also. IT definitely leaves its own hole. As someone who struggles with those thoughts- even though I'm a bright happy person, is a struggle. Had its grip on me since I was 9. I'm clawing my way through. These are powerful healing words. Thank you for sharing.
YES..PULSE concert!!! Mugs.. I'm going 55yrs old as I reflect back to my youth as a teenager experimenting with drugs (smoked alot of pot). Pink Floyd, Ozzy, AC/DC made me as a young man to think about the LYRICS and of course I went into a mindset even @ a young age! peace.. MORE FLOYD
Pink Floyd and Tool ...my 2 most favorite bands! Hope you continue with the PF journey. You need to do an album review of Dark Side of the Moon. Animals is another great Pink Floyd album. 😊
Pink Floyd and Tool are my classical music. I understand it's not nearly as musical or complex as classical music, but they're similar in status and what they created in their time.
Some bands do 'songs' - Pink Floyd do 'albums' - while some songs appear to stand alone - you really can't understand them fully, unless you hear them, in their place, as part of the whole.
Exchange a walk-on part in a war, for a lead role in a cage. Great lyric. Dave Gilmour explained that the intro was supposed to sound like someone playing their guitar at home, along to a tune they're listening to, on a transistor radio.
The thought I had the first time hearing that lyric was it was about Muhammad Ali, at the time still called Cassius Clay, when he went to prison rather than go to Vietnam and fight.
Check out George Benson "On Broadway" for a different take on that voice and guitar harmony technique. It's away that people used to learn parts on their instruments, by singing the parts and trying to match what they sing on their instruments
You need to watch a live version. These type of videos never give u a true feeling for the song. This way u can watch what they do. This song is outstanding amazing and iconic.
Hi Mugnify... They aren't using a talk box on the break down... it is David Gilmour scat singing along to the lead guitar line he is playing. How hard I LAUGHED when discovering how WAY OFF I was!
Rich is right. It's about Sid Barret (sp?) who was a member who left b/c of drug issues and mental illness. Really sad as I have seen friends go down the same road, and neither the path nor the end is good.
Syd didn't leave the band, the band left him. His behavior had become so problematic that they decided to just not pick him up on the way to a gig. They had already been using Gilmour to cover for him because he really wasn't performing on stage so for a bit they had five members.

Not necessarily. But your insight is nonetheless impressive.
