  • I installed a simple grey water system at our off grid cabin. I also set out a couple of trail cameras. Deer season is less than a month away so it’s time to get ready. We are depending on deer meat/grouse meat to carry us through the winter.

Everything is really starting to come together and you have made a lot of progress. I'm really excited to see how the stove project turns out. Using stone for the background around the stove will be beautiful and will add to the cozy feel of the cabin. With each new video, it shows all the hard work and efforts you two have put into this cabin/homestead.

Kyle, if you want produce right now, go to the you pick farms or markets and buy bushels and can it or dehydrate it now. There is a shortage coming this winter since the ships have been stopped. And, you can always put up some flour once the weather turns really cold for biscuits, tacos, etc. Winter squash can be stored in a temp sort of controlled dark place (the closet) for a number of months. And, they have good nutrition and would cook in or on top of your wood stove - or as soup.
I would not worry too much about naysayers. They are everywhere. Your spirit and brains are top notch. I wish we had many more young people like you. You have accomplished a lot this summer. May God Bless us all in the coming winter. Like you I have a dog (G.S.) and she is my best friend and is glued to my hip.

I knew I'd live in a log cabin the first day of hunting season 20 yrs ago when my dad & brother's took me hunting I was 12 yrs old. I love the wood's and nature enough to spend the rest of my life right in the middle of it. We're designing the fireplace to be made of stone and big enough for a 6" 2' man to walk thru it. When we get home after skiing all day it's not our feet only that needs warming, it's our entire bodies thus building the fireplace to scale will only benefit us. You've given me a lot of great ideas for our cabin but I must admit..my wife isn't crazy about building a cabin on 7 acres in the wood's w/ no one around, but I can't wait! I'd like to watch the video of your finished cabin if you're done? thanks again, take care

  • @AlisonBailey-bz6hl

Hey Kyle - thanks for the videos! I find them relaxing and easy to balance the worlds stresses that come. I am an avid gardener and for basil, they do not like to get the leaves wet. Plant them in a pot or bucket with holes and water from the bottom pan. Also pinch the flowers off the tops when you see them start. It allows for better flavour and not a woody plant that lasts a lot longer in the season. Also, look up companion planting. We have slopped acreage and my husband built raised beds with a framed top doors that allow us to weed and harvest all while keeping the deer out. We grow and train our plants to grow vertically when we can. Saves space, but also provides good airflow preventing rot. Also growing vertically shelters more sensitive plants from wind. Lastly, check out Bokashi composting! In Canada we can utilize the Spring to late Fall and get great compost going. Again your and Cierra’s videos have helped me a bunch. Happy Early Thanksgiving guys!

Dump leaves in your garden space for winter great mulch. When you get around to doing a Fench rebars cut in half with 7' deer net attached with small zip ties is cheap and works. A warden told us to use another perimeter fence outside the deer net 4 ft away with a strand of twine because deer don't like to feel trapped. We used the cheezy 6' bamboo stakes and two strands of curling ribbon this year and it worked awesome the jute doesn't hold up all season! With all your woods you probably could make some fence stakes and saplings for the bamboo stakes for free and it would only cost about 20 bucks for the 100' folded deer netting. We've used the same netting for five years now. The last couple years we took it down For winter to change shape of garden. Believe me we have lots of deer! We joke we run a bunk and dump! They lay just outside the perimeter fence.

I had to repair a grey well on my first house, and I did it just like you. Worked fine. As far as chicken coops in the winter, I lived in Alberta Canada and it got as cold as -40 F and the chickens were OK as long as we had a heat lamp on their water so it wouldn't freeze; if you change out their water every morning, and you don't have drafts, you should be good.

As a farmer and outdoorsman all my life, stacking wood on the ground is normal. Here’s why… Why build something to elevate your firewood off the ground? That’s exactly what the first two layers do… they keep the rest of the wood off the ground. Lastly, the wood on the bottom serves as good smoldering logs to keep mosquitoes away, and perfect for the campfire at night while you’re sleeping. Guaranteed to have hot coals in the morning while that wet log kept the bears away from the cabin.

    Hey, Kyle,
    Good Vid, as usual.
I'm guessing, but I think you are using the current building for your woodshed due to lack of time needed to build a new one.
Understandable, because you have been Soo Busy. I think it is too far from the house, especially when the snowfall starts.
I suggest next year or the year after building a new woodshed, and perhaps orienting it with the prevailing Wind in mind, to achieve the maximum drying effect.
One thing I know, I wouldn't want to make the trip out there in your winter Temps too often.
I guess you'll know more when you determine what your burn rate is with your stove and this new house.
    Respect.

Hello Kyle, I have been watching your video's for about two months now (have not seen all of them but I'm working on it) and I am truly impressed with what you have accomplished. I am 67 years old and a former construction contractor. I don't know where you are located but I get the sense it is a location where you get some very cold temperatures in the winter. If that is the case then you need to pay attention to what the "frost line" is. I know you mention this in the video but it does not look to me that your idea is in fact below your frost line (you might want to recheck your measurements). I say this because you do not want your grey water system to freeze. Although not catastrophic it is a pain in the ass (inconvenient) when it does. Learn from one of my early years mistakes. Anyway, great video's, great effort and I am rooting for you!

The frost line where I am at is 5 ft (so they say, I’m guessing that’s an extreme winter). I have the bottom of the pit right at 60 inches. I’m hopping that’s enough. We will find out! Hopefully not the hard way haha.

@@KYLESCABIN Thank you Kyle for your response and the information. Upon reviewing more video's it appears you are in Minnesota. Good luck to you!
