Theme Parks Were Better in the 90s (Part 3)

  • Theme parks were better in the 90s and this time in Part 3, I cover very different subjects from what was covered before. While Las Vegas developed its own brand of family entertainment, New York City, or specifically Times Square, did so in the 90s as well. While many businesses moved in to change the reputation of the area, Disney worked as the single largest catalyst, encouraging many other businesses like Hershey, M&M's, Toys R Us and even McDonald's to build flagship locations in the city. While themed chain restaurants moved in too, New York was also home to many unique themed dining options, including WFF New York, Mars 2112, and the Jekyll and Hyde Club. This video also dives pretty far into retail as well, exploring malls of the 90s and the rise of Mega Malls full of attractions and rides such as the West Edmonton Mall and Mall of America. Finally, I return back to Las Vegas to cover the many attractions I've barely mentioned, including MGM Grand Adventures, the Star Trek Experience and the Grand Slam Canyon (the Adventuredome today).

Hey, this is a re-upload of the previous Part 3. Weirdly, the old video was taken down by the WWE for the old WWF commercial I briefly showed, illustrating the name change after the lawsuit from the World Wildlife Foundation. I felt that it clearly falls under Fair Use, but it was easier to just modify the video slightly and reupload, rather than going through RUclips's messy counter-claim system that could take up to 30 days to resolve.
For anyone wondering, I'm working on the final Part 4 and while I've gotten a lot of writing done, I was held up with a lot going on, so I haven't been able to get to it as I wanted. I'll still try to get it out as quickly as possible though.

Kinda hilarious given the context of the video... Just like Agario bigger ones will always come for the smaller at the expense of creativity?
Keep up the amazing work this 4? 5? 6...? series are at a documentary level I only see in productions like the ones Defunctland makes. Its always important that despite the "berm" the development of any theme park is and should always reflect the course of culture, economics and geopolitics. I think Disney in the last decade (and what they are accepting now) has prompted a growing disconnect between people and what they consider worthy.

@@juani0210 RUclips uses an automatic detection system, but it doesn't take into account how the clips are used. In this case, I believe one of the WWE channels found the video flagged and just took down the video without considering the context that the clip was used in. I think it's more lazy indifference than anything, but it's definitely annoying, especially because it's not worth a legal counter-dispute.

You hit the nail on the head with what caused the shift. With MGM removing the Wizard of Oz attraction for more floor space for slots/gaming. The mindset of the 00s and especially since the Great Recession is if it's not making money, don't do it. New rides added at parks don't have the landscaping elements anymore. And it's not just amusement parks that saw this contraction. Pensions and employee benefits start getting pulled back too. New office buildings, especially government ones, become shorter, and less ornate to cut cost. le sigh.

As a Minnesotan, I can tell you that MoA is basically the same as it was in the 90's. The theming is just removed. The theme park, aquarium, and comedy club are still here. Some of the theme park attractions actually stuck around just with new theming to mostly late 2000's shows. The only ride that remained completely unchanged was the Paul Bunion water ride. I don't have any idea if there's still a wedding chapel.

@@PoseidonEntertainment I haven't lived in Vegas for 12 years, but my family still does. I decided to head over and walked through it 3 years ago, and it was quite the surreal experience. I hadn't done that in 25 years.
Overall, it was a super weird experience. It was weirdly empty. And in ways it felt like something from a bygone era as I remeber it was bustling in the 90s! A lot of the mdiway games were unmanned and there seemed to be about 10 workers running the full park. It didn't help that the original water ride, "Rim Runner" (which used to give a nostalgic bromine smell to the park) was replaced by another/lesser/non-water ride.
There were also areas that you could tell were previously used for families and larger parties to sit down and eat a meal, and these too were empty.
The whole park had that "80s empty mall" feel to it, where you KNEW that this used to be something AMAZING, and now it's just barely hanging on.
Please provide an update next time you're there!

I know I’m late to comment on this video, but I think some major themed attractions that haven’t shown up in the videos yet are Mini-Golf courses. I distinctly remember the Dragon’s Lair mini golf at Myrtle Beach when I was younger. It had a whole animatronic dragon that popped out every so often to blow fire. Also, one that is still standing to my knowledge is Professor Hacker’s mini golf, which has an element of taking a mine train from the entrance to the first hole. It’s not much, but it adds a little something extra to the experience of mini-golf of all things.
Finally, I think the Magi Quest chain of experiences are the peak of 90’s fantasy themed entertainment. Though few survive, and most in Great Wolf Lodge locations, going to a Magi Quest location and getting immersed in the story and atmosphere was incredible

Sorry to hear the first video was taken down; but this part 3 is still excellent!!! As I stated the first time I miss the 90's theming it is almost as if kids were put at the top of the importance scale when it came to everything. Without Disneyland and/or WDW our theme parks of today would not have had a standard to measure up to in terms of theming. In addition to everything from TV commercials, movie theaters, theme parks, shopping malls, restaurants, fast food, even SEARS and so on; they all had a way of entertaining kids with themes, colors, electronics, toys, etc. While there are some things I would take back; maybe it is nostalgia and/or some of it is just genuine loss but overall I think we are better off today.

I grew up shopping at Katy Mills Mall, Worked there at the payless in 2016-17 before they closed all Payless stores, and during this time the mall was sold and renovated by the simon corp. before, each entrance and graphics was themed around different activities these characters in the shape of stars were doing. One entrance had large kite statues at the outside parking entrance and when you walked inside the star characters above were flying kites. (I can still hear the "welcome, You are at entrance #" voice) The mall is mostly grey and white tiles now and they've removed the majority of the old theming. But most of the mall still has that brown and yellow wood flooring.

I serendipitously came home from Knott's Berry Farm the night of the original upload, so I'm reposting my comment for the immense nostalgia!
I'm originally from Minnesota, so I grew up with the Mall of America, and it was such a special place. I didn't visit (and get a pass to) Knott's Berry Farm until August 2023, but when I visited Camp Snoopy there, I was flooded with nostalgia despite never having visited before. It was astonishing just how much Knott's carried over to Minnesota-the pavement, fencing, lighting, the clock, and a lot of the rides were ported over from Knott's (both within Camp Snoopy and other areas, i.e., Tampico Tumbler and Grand Slammer from Fiesta Village were called Treetop Tumbler and Screaming Yellow Eagle within Mall of America’s Camp Snoopy).
I would say the Mall of America had a more 'Northwoods' theme, which I guess makes more sense if you're from that region, versus the overt western theme of Knott's Berry Farm. A lot of this carried over from Paul Bunyan's Log Chute (a spiritual successor to Timber Mountain Log Ride) with the more pine trees and Minnesota-authentic rockwork because shoreline cliffs are mostly gray there, etc. This ride luckily has mostly remained untouched to this day within “Nickelodeon Universe”. I think they might even still have the Knott’s-brand syrup in the kitchen scene on the lift hill (where the townsfolk are making giant pancakes for Paul, who appears right after the first drop in the cavern).
Mergers & acquisitions really do destroy great experiences and history unfortunately! Common theme of this series is terrific craftsmanship and place-making for sterile minimalism and standardization😔

@@PoseidonEntertainment Your channel and this series are fantastic. This is the first time it has really hit so close to home since Knott's Camp Snoopy was like my Disneyland. I think this series shows that the designers in this period really got it right the first time, and a lot of these experiences over time were chipped away and diminished, mostly due to prioritizing profits. I was laid off this year from Disney, and I believe my mindset on quality and guest experience had something to do with it, unfortunately. It just isn't a priority anymore.

SHOUT out to the West Edmonton Mall coverage. It's great to get some Canadian coverage of what was, at the time, a shot at first rate Mall culture, rather than a pale imitation of something greator (usually from our cousin's down south). The West Ed is my hometown mall, and it has let slide most of the themeing elements over the years to the point I had forgotten the Bourbon Street & New Orlean's theme it tried to undertake. The coaster just finially shut down over covid, the dolphin attractions are still there I think, but the other water feature, the 20,000 Leagues under the sea submarines are long shut down & removed. Getting rid of the dark humor that the West Ed Mall had more submarines in better functional order than the entire Royal Canadian Navy.
Poseidon Entertainment videos are always great, to see my home town mall back in it's glory days, was, well, nostelgic but overlayed with enui. Well done Poseidon!

I wish that they would have continued maintaining the mall as it was. With anything themed, it often feels like a lot of money goes into something initially and then it's just left to slowly fall apart or close. It would have been cool to experience the mall in its heyday

love the content as always, appreciate the hard work wish it was more recognized for your sake. I do have a question about this series is part 4 or subsequent parts going to feature the theme park landscape in the 90s which was MUCH more different at Disney then even the 2000s very special time even for Universal

God that song. I was singing it going to MOA on Saturday. Place was absolutely packed, alive and well. It's not as good as it was. Camp Snoopy is 🐐. Those trees are not fake. And the log chute is still there.

I was wondering if you were going to bring up the WWF location in Times Square. I did go to it during the peak of the Attitude era. Like you said, I don't remember the food being great but as a huge fan, that place was awesome. Also remember ESPN Zone and the Virgin Records store. Times Square is really dull now that most of everything is gone. I've watched videos of it recently and it's nowhere near the same. Also think a lot of themed stores and dining can be pointed towards FAO Schwartz. There were tons of locations but the most memorable next to NYC was the one that used to be on International Drive. Had a huge Star Wars room. Planet Hollywood is one of the last types of these themed restaurants still in existence and I think a lot have closed.

Did you know one of reasons that most of these family attractions in Las Vegas failed was primarily gamblers didn’t want to play near children and stayed away from those casinos.

The concept of the space/mars themed restaurant discussed in the video seems like it was ripped off or replicated somewhat recently by Disney for their Space 220 restaurant (mostly the "space transport" to the restaurant element) and a bit of the Galactic Starcruiser (the presentation of the food and the live alien actors engaging with guests)
