How to travel in Ooty Toy Train ?
To have one of the best experience and to enjoy the breathtaking scenic beauty of Nilgirs (as you see in the video), it is highly recommended to take the travel or take the entire journey i.e. from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) or vice versa.
Since we were already in Ooty and we wanted to get the experience of morning train journey from Mettupalam to Ooty. We hired a cab in the morning and our journey start at around 4:45 AM from our hotel.
A 50 KM taxi ride from Ooty town to Mettupalayam railway station took us around one and half hours approximately. This taxi ride was a downhill journey from Ooty which is situated 2,240 M above sea level to Mettupalayam which is only 320 M above sea level. The Sun was rising in the far east, while we watched it rise from horizon through the clouds during our downhill journey towards Mettupalayam. This is one of the best Sunrise i have watched during my trip.
    Train Timings:
    Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) :
    Departure: 7:10 AM
    Arrival: 12 PM
    Udhagamandalam to Mettupalam:
    Departure: 2 PM
    Arrival: 5:35 PM
You may Book the train tickets via offical Indian Railway booking websites or apps. Since we planned this trip in the last minute, we had to take Tatkal ticket via IRCTC website. I recommend to book the train tickets in advance.
    About Toy Train:
Nilgiri Mountain Railway / also famously known as "Ooty Toy train" is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. The track is also considered to be the steepest track in Asia with a maximum gradient of 8.33%
Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only railway that runs through the south Indian mountains on a daily basis. The train runs daily from Mettupalayam to Ooty (Udhagamandalam) via Coonoor in the morning and back from Ooty to Mettupalam in the afternoon. During the Summer season, the frequency increses to meet the inflow of tourist and also accommodate the normal passengers.
The total distance of the track is 46 Kms running through the Nilgiri Mountains. The uphill journey takes around 4 and half hours), and the downhill journey takes 3 and half hours.
From Mettupalam to Coonoor, the train is pushed by Steam engine and then at Coonoor station the engine is then changed to Diesel Engine with addition of multiple compartments.
Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, the line uses the Abt rack and pinion system to climb the steep gradient. The Nilgiri mountain railway is the only rack railway in India.
The train runs at an average speed of 10 Km/h crossing 45.8 kilometres (28 mi), 108 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges, including few of the stations and maintenance stops. Kallar, which is the first station from Mettupalayam followed by Adderly, Hillgrove, Runneymede, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravakadu, Lovedale and finally to Udhagamandalam. During each stop the engineers refill the water tanks in the engine followed by regular maintenance checks for the engine.

Why two different engines? I'm surprised they use steam engine. This is a must travel route before they end up electrifying it

    • @MohmadZafran
      @MohmadZafran  2 года назад +1

At Coonoor station, the engine of the train is replaced by a diesel one to give the train more pull they are also adding additional compartments during this process.
However, the train still runs on Steam engine from Mettupalayam to coonoor.
Yes, its a must try/visit, before they retire the steam engines completely.

The main attraction of this journey is the experience of the steam locomotive pull us up the hills, and also getting multiple pit stops to lubricate and fill in the engine with Water.

@@MohmadZafran If you observe the railway track from Kallar to Conoor you will see a rack in between the rails. There is a corresponding pinion gear on the engine that engages with this rack to provide a 'grip' and enable the engine push the train up the very steep gradient ( 1 in 12.5 in some locations) on this section. This mechanism is present only in the Steam engines of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR). The Diesel-electric engines by themselves, when tried out, could not push the train up the steep Kallar-conoor section and thus the Steam Engines are still used on the Mettupalayam-Conoor section. Diesel -Electric engines are thus only used on the Conoor-Ooty section where the gradients are much milder. Steam engines were earlier used on this section as well, but it appears that the Diesels were introduced later to 'reserve' the limited number of steam engines for the Conoor Mettupalayam section.
Electrification and the use of suitable engines with electric traction supporting the 'rack and pinion' arrangement may be possible but the railway will certainly lose its charm and probably its 'Unesco Heritage Railway' status.
It is unlikely that the Steam Engines will be retired any time soon, as the Golden Rock Railway workshop at Trichy is manufacturing Oil-fired Steam locomotives for the NMR.

Hi, Negative PCR test was mandatory at the point I travelled, the rules might have changed since then. Please check with local centers to confirm on the same to avoid any issues during travel.
I had both my vaccination completed, but I still carried a negative PCR test, which was asked to be shown twice while entering Tamil Nadu and boarding train

My Trip to Ooty was from Kerala via Wayanad on 12th of Sept 2021, at that time it was mandatory to have a Negative PCR test result and also complete Tamilnadu govt E-Pass to cross the border.
Please check and follow the current rules that are imposed by both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu government before you start your trip to avoid any issues.

This is what I have found to why frequently trains are getting cancelled
The Salem division of Southern Railway has cancelled the service until further notice due to the frequent downpour and recurrent landslides in the Mettupalayam-Coonoor section.
