Bittersweet. The Dead Malls Series is back but more mall corpses to be dissected.
"Bath & Body Works" would say "Be a Sweetie and Give Six Feetie" underground :D
I wouldn't say bittersweet and be all happy that the dead Mall series is back because there was a lot of time in between this one and the one before it so we don't know if the series is permanently back. I'm happy that he's making more videos for the Dead Mall Series but I can't say it's permanently back because he's all over the place with sporadically posting his videos.
Bittersweet? Man, fuck malls.
I'm not American, but I get a feeling malls, in general, are definitely done over there, they will all disappear within 5 years at most, the vast majority having like a couple of years left. Not just that, in the rest of the world they'll most probably follow suit and not last a lot longer.

The GNC and Victoria Secret are closed? That’s a stroke for a mall.
I'm sad about gnc I had friends that worked there before gnc went bankrupt 😞
@@bridgetmurphyv the GNCs in my area do really well. Which is surprising considering this is the unhealthiest state.

I remember back in the day it took you 30 minutes to find a decent parking spot at the mall where I live. Now you can throw a baseball down the mall and not hit anyone.
Because they are money hungry and want to see your business suffer.
Said it best.
The mall in my town is probably gonna be on this channel in a few more years
same
There are at lease 5 malls in my area (St. Louis) that are dead or dying. The Galleria, Mid Rivers, South County, St. Clair Square, University Mall, St. Louis Mills, and there is one that is now abandoned: Jamestown Mall.
My "mall" died about 2 months. It's funny because the last stores in it were JCPenny and Bath and Body Works. Now, it'll be used for a medical facility is what I'm hearing.
@@merlinthebikewizard4392 I used to live in O'Fallon years ago while stationed at Scott. I remember St Clair Square being so nice. Also enjoyed going to Union Station.
Same here with my local mall as well. There is a town center only 2 or 3 exits north on I-79 in Morgantown, WV from it that has about 100 and at least 20 restaurants such as Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and a Fujian that opened about 3 months ago.
Dead malls are so 2010s. The next thing will be: Dead office space series
That'd definitely have strong "backrooms" vibes.
I don't see many large canes building tall towers in a cities future. NYC seems to have plenty of towers under construction, but I realize that it takes years of planning and contracts let to build them and you just don't turn it all off in a minute.
Just because companies can do WFH doesnt mean they will bend over backwards too. More likely they'll use it to make sure nobody can call off sick. Let's get real here.
I suggest everyone start filming their office spaces now before they move the robots into the "electric car battery" customer support offices.
If I ran the numbers on how many sq ft of the floors we lease went unused for over a year I think I'd be first to jump out the window.
And it's like a creepy frozen in time effect too, go to check on something, see a phone with 400 missed calls and a calendar from March 2020, etc...
Where can I get a shirt like Judy's? The one with dogs. I'm asking for a friend.

Psychic Friends ‘R Us
Oh my lord I just thought of something. That ‘car museum’ was probably just some dudes car collection and it was cheaper to park them in the mall than a parking garage.
If that's true then this mall is worse than it looks. What self respecting mall would house a personal collection instead of a retail store?
@@nomobobby oh I think you are right on with the ‘worse than it looks’. But the idea that you can probably get the space for $1000/month which would be cheap compared to renting a garage. Here you can cover costs by charging admission as well. Even if you break even that’s a steal for storage.
@@nomobobby I miss Malls
Yeah I think when a mall has not one but two vehicle storage spaces craved out of the retail stores its a sign of worse to come. Cause you know if they could have gotten a retailer to come they would've.
Fun fact this mall does have a vehicle storage lot in the old bon-ton.
I really miss malls. Growing up in the 90s and 2000s malls were still big places to go. Good memories!
Good riddance I say. Temples to consumerism, fueling our worst traits.
@@alfa8728 Temple now you sit at your house and pray at the altar
@@alfa8728 I’d argue that the alternative we have now is worse. At least shopping centres had things like repair shops and if you’re lucky some small slow consumerism type stuff. Nowadays, you’re more likely to be scammed into buying crap and the right to repair is in tatters.
Do Americans not go to malls?
Really glad that the main mall i've always gone too is still in good business and thriving. Got some really good memories just hanging out with my friends there at the cafeteria back in like '04.
It amazes me how style comes back around. I know this mall likely hasn’t been touched in years. Yet all the wood tones, gold accents, white and brown paint, natural light, and fresh plants somehow look incredibly modern to me.
They're very nostalgic for me, as we had several pioneer malls with similar décor in our area when I was young and impressionable (incredible as it seems now). I hope this means Good Taste is making a comeback. Stay safe.
Was in there back in December. It still looks plenty good
I think the stone floor, the fancy white ceilings, and the wood was done back in the 90s. Before that, it was all 70s dark brown tile. Its a nice mall inside.
it was definitely remodeled since it first opened
This mall was remodeled around 2000. The brown seen on the former theater was the color of the tile before.
Most action at a "dead mall" in awhile. During this virus no less. Yet gnc can't survive....
Why go to GNC for high prices when you can get it online and really fast.
With a shirt like that, Judy seems to be doing just fine for herself.
I now just watch for the intros.
Mall owners should really consider converting these dead malls into studio apartments.
It has been talked about, they already moved The Broome County Career and Community Services Center into the mall. This is located in what use to be the former Sears store along with the Beer Tree Brewery.
Imagine the night life, just be boofing everyone all day long.

I've always loved the Dead Mall Series but what's with the first 5 minutes of this video?
Yeah I was a bit disappointed, it was goofy and all but man, that and the ad for Nord took up like half of this video :p
I love the content and Dan as well too, but 5 minutes of ADs and some unrelated 90's TV show cutaway for a 14 min long vid…yeah, it's kind of a disappointment.
I'm sure he's just trying to fully monetize a 9 min content to pass the 10 min mark. Some other fans are saying that it's a "calculated art" but no it isn't, smh (if there's some calculation to it, it's just for the length of the video).
Yeah it's pretty frustrating. The bit ran too long, both the psychic thing and the advert bit.
@@andrewstewart1464 Yeah, i thought i clicked on another video by accident cause the intro was so long
Yup I was thrown off by that and fast forwarded through it to make sure it was an actual dead mall video
In a way, I actually find it more depressing when you see malls barely clinging to life rather than completely shut down. It's like they are in denial and pretending to be okay, but we all know they are done for.
This is my local mall, I'm glad you covered it. I hope the beer tree brewery at the former Sears anchor store which is only accessible from outside mall (seen about 10 minutes in, located behind that mural you mentioned) brings life back to this mall as you said there is still life left in it and has potential.
Also, at the former bonton location located the center of the mall by the beautiful skylight houses people's boats and other vehicles that they store which is also only accessible from outside.
I used to live there myself, just moved a couple months ago. I didn’t know the former BonTon was being used for anything, better than nothing I guess lol
Worked there, and left Binghamton 20 years ago..... Walked through the mall maybe 2 years ago, a shame.
Center Court used to have a huge fountain. Working for Kay Bee, we got a RC car stuck in the fountain back in the 90s. Mall Security was not pleased.
@@andrewb4584 lol I bet, and with a fountain, movie theater and full anchors the mall was definitely at its peak back then. I’ve since moved away in late 2020, but last time I saw the place it was dwindling, especially with covid. Not the worst, but it’s days are numbered
My local now dead mall (it closed up shop at the beginning of last year, finally) had a local brewery try to set-up shop in what used to be the arcade.
...it did not work.

If it's brown flush it down.
So, I worked at three locations in that mall at various points in my life.. I lived in a town near Binghamton from '86 to 2000 when I got out of undergrad, and fled...
The Burlington was a Bradlees in the 80s and 90s, and my first employer. They went under in the mid/late 90s. By the abandoned Macy's, there was a Kay Bee, worked there in the mid 90s, and across from the Burlington was a Radio Shack. Worked in a different location, but subbed in there from time to time.
Shame to see it like that, I remember circling for a parking spot for an hour at the holidays, but... Much like the whole town, it's done. Shame...
Sad to see malls we grew up with die out
Holy moly. I grew up going to this mall. Haven't been back there in about 20 years. It's bittersweet to see such a huge part of my childhood and teen years so empty.
- seems that 20 years ago, people found it easier to pretend to like eachother. I think that's all that's changed?
No internet, no streaming services, no social media. It's much harder to be mean when you actually have to be face to face with people. I think it was probably more there's really absolutely nothing else to do. We used to go there as a free activity to people watch and window shop. Different times for sure!
It's the same for me and the Arnot in Horseheads.
@@cookieskoon2028 We used to go there as a break from routine as a "special" trip, lol. Gas was really cheap so arnot was a fairly close and inexpensive nice change. Haha!
@@crowsdeluxe Good times. The Binghamton area was one of our change of pace locations. Either that or Ithaca, depending on the motive. Ithaca man, that city has become almost unrecognizable since the 90's.

It's so dumb that so many failing malls are surrounded by active retail.
I love the dead malls series, but the content doesn't start till 5 minutes in. The intro felt way too long.

Mall music, cigarettes and black coffee are just a few of my favorite things.
Holy shit that intro
Nice profile picture.
Dan, you still hiding from COVID?
This saddens me deeply, this is my local mall that I fell in love with as a child. I used to go there almost once a week to just hang out, but now haven't been there since lockdown began.
A lot of those empty spaces shown here were filled not too long ago, and now are just ghosts. I remember them all. It seemed like just when new life was beginning to breathe into this mall, COVID popped up and started the death squeeze. That arcade was very new just before COVID, and was just what this mall needed. There also used to be a wrestling or MMA event held there, 2 gamestops, and a glowing indoor minigolf course located where the car museum now is. The closing of all the anchors happened quickly, I know they were all present in 2016, after that they began to fall.
The Oakdale Theatre was before my time, it was mostly a thing back in the 80s (to my knowledge). I know from a friend that it used to be popular, they showed a lot of old movies also, not just the new releases. I think it had 4 screens, but I could be wrong.
This mall was my introduction to the sterile mall atmosphere that I always loved, and was the reason I began watching this series. I remember doing a few laps around one time, and talking with a friend about how one day this mall would become just like those in your videos. I never imagined that your voice over these images would become a reality. Still, it has life, and will cling until the bitter end. But the loving memories of so many will not die, and will live on within its walls long after they're gone. As I'm sure was the case with so many other malls that you've shown here.
Update for anyone who cares: I've gone back since I wrote this comment, and it seems to be coming back to life! The aforementioned arcade and events seem to be doing well, they have what I believe to be an escape room, and most of the shop spaces have been filled. Very excited to see it doing well!
How does Spencer's stay open? I've never seen anyone buy anything from there ever
Online sales maybe? I got a pride flag at a spencers during Pride Month 2019
they also own Spirit Halloween
About the only thing I purchased from them were black lights and posters. Its just mostly garbage anymore
I love their jewelry.
Same people who go to hot topic go there lol
9:00 I get a strange feeling from those Halo & Terminator arcade games, just out in the middle of one of the wings. On one hand, it feels oddly calming to see something so modern looking in the middle of the hall like that; on the other, I wonder if they used to have an arcade room, and now they don't?
Yeah a local downtown mall here had a theatre with a small arcade, and Terminator Salvation was one of the games. Must have made a ton of them.
I go to this mall regularly. The arcade room is closed right now (most likely because of Corona but I'm not 100% sure). You can actually see it in the same shot behind the barricade. Never been inside but it's pretty large peering into that dark area.
I live in Johnson City,NY and have lived in the area for most of my life. The theater at the Oakdale Mall had three screens from what I remember. At the beginning of the video you passed by an empty store front that was pink on the outside, that was a Disney store at one time. You were right one about that one place being a payless shoes store.
The fact you can walk into a mall and buy something a year after Covid started is amazing. Awesome video as always.
Hay Dan, been a subscriber for a while and just want to send you some congrats. I'm watching the BBC series, 'Can't get you out if my head' and saw you on there. So proud of you when I saw it. Well done.👏👏👏👏
I’m going to cry. This is MY mall. Your series brought me so much comfort in college, now that I’m home as a student mid-COVID, I feel all the buildings aging around me. Thank you, so much. It brought tears to my eyes.
I've never been this happy to see an ACTUAL LIVING POTTED PLANT
Dan bell! Come back!
How how I've missed your content as much as the good times at these malls.
The edits at the beginning, Dan's narration, the mallwave, the mall. I just love this stuff. Literally takes me away. I can't explain it.
Dan putting out a lot of content suddenly. We love ya!
This is one of my favorite series on RUclips. There's just something so mesmerizing about the emptiness, not to mention the background music. Liminal spaces are the best.
I would go back one year from now to this mall, I think a lot more of the stores will be gone unfortunately, but good to see Wally's Wig World going strong
Am I missing that joke in that intro that took about a third of the entire video?
I found myself skipping that whole bit along with the NordPass ad.
Its just artsy fartsy. Thats his style. I don't mind it but it does take away a bit from the video.
This mall used to have a nice fountian in the middle of it when it first opened. They had to shut it down after a few years due to maintenence issues and cost. I remember seeing the first ever Star Wars film here when it came out. (A new Hope). I was really little and slept through half of it. It once had an Aladdin's Castle video game arcade in 81 to 83 or so. I spent my allowence in it.

@@GreenAppelPie Even a few years ago it was a pretty nice mall. The anchor stores all folding near the same time has put a incredible strain on the mall.
In truth the mail itself had 3 different floors since it is built into the side of a hill. Hard to tell that though since the anchor stores that took advantage of the elevation change are closed.
@@icecreamforcrowhurst As far as i know it hasn't had a movie theater in the mail since at least 1993. I will also let you know what he is actually looking at the next time i visit the mail.
***Correction***
This is someone's first hand account of the movie theater. It would have been open in 1993 i was just to young to remember it.
Opened October 29, 1975, the Oakdale Mall 3 was operated by Loew’s, then by an independent and closed in the early-2000’s. It was last used as a 2nd run house.
"I was the manager of the Oakdale Mall Cinemas from 1990-1993. Theater 1 (333 seats) had a curtain that opened from the center, and theaters 2 (294) and 3 (289) had curtains that opened from left to right. It was the Bighhamton area’s busiest theater until Loews built the Town Square 9 which opened in November 1993. The Oakdale Mall Cinemas first opened in 1975. Loews was not the final operator of this house-when they gave it up in the late 90’s, and independent operator ran it for a bit as a subrun before giving up. The theater is still sitting there empty, used for storage by the mall. It is located inside the mall and is not a freestanding building."

Dead Mall Series = Nostalgia and depression at the same time. Great stuff!
You need to visit Detroit. Visit Fairlane Mall. Definitely a dying mall.
I remember my first trip there in late 1975, or maybe 1976. The thickness of the carpet / carpet padding in Fowler's (later Bonton) is what stood out in my mind as a child on my first trip there (my first trip to any mal, period). Some stores of note that used to be there: Bradlee's (in the burlington space); montgomery ward (not part of original mall), the lemonade stand, the Taco Maker arcade, the Aladdin's Castle arcade, and Herman's Sporting goods. I wonder if Spencer's is the only original store -- it has been there a long time.
You remember the mall as I do! There was a Burger King at one end that had a “gazebo” like structure in the middle. My best friend and I always sat in there to eat. I remember there was a talking Christmas tree in the toy section of JC Penney. The mall looks nice today but it’s nothing compared to my memories.
@@jenniferwagner6478 I remember in 1976 at BK they had the LeeRoy Nieman posters of Olympic Athletes from the '76 summer games. Not as cool as the drinking glasses that Carol's used to have. The times were changing.
