www.ultralightf...- The Double Eagle Airplane is a "plans built" design powered by the widely available stock VW engine, that will carry 2 people with a useful load around 515 Lbs. It can be built and flown under the Light Sport Aircraft Category. This is a strong and simple airplane designed using traditional and proven aviation tubular steel technology. It is easy to build and there has developed around it a strong core of builders that offer help and support for building the aircraft. There is also a full kit developed by John Bolding in consultation with the designer that makes building this design even faster.
Leonard built it as his 11th airplane project as an outgrowth of the need to have a trainer for his very popular Legal Eagle Ultralight. The Double Eagle started to form up in 2002 and was first widely seen at the 2003 Oshkosh show. A repeat performance in 2004 broadened its popularity, and many kits started out the door.
"DE" is getting special treatment this year (2007) because of an invitation that Leonard Received from the EAA to display the Double Eagle this year at the Air Venture 2007 Air Show. It seems that EAA membership has been asking for an affordable Light Sport Aircraft and most others while fine airplanes tend to run upwards of $50,000. Since the Double Eagle can be certified in this category and costs under 10-12 thousand dollars (even paying retail, and getting some building help), it is very affordable the invite went out. The aircraft is sporting a new Culver prop and has many cosmetic improvements and tweaks this year in celebration of the event.
Because the Legal Eagle and the Better Half VW engine tend to dominate the www.betterhalfvw.com website, I decided that this year the "DE" would get its own website and so www.DoubleEagleAirplane.com was born. I hope that all the visitors to this site will give this airplane the look it deserves as it is easy to fly and using auto gas is easy to prep and fuel for those that just want a quick flight around the patch, but has enough useful load that 14 gallons of fuel (10 under LSA), a portable radio and GPS can take you lots of places as well. The airplane is so light it is also easy to trailer (the wings remove simply) and having STOL characteristics can be flown from many flat areas that would barely support the moniker airport. In some ways it represents a fun return to the barnstorming days where you get to wear goggles and scarf, but in an airplane so strong that it is half the weight of most of its predecessors from that era.

Awesome seeing the interview with Leonard! I met him at Oshkosh this year and he's a pleasant, knowledgeable man who designs some marvelous aircraft for the not so rich among us 👍Thank you for the upload!

Thanks for this motivational upload: I finished all my wing ribs and then procrastinated. It's a good reminder to start dealing with spars.

HA! 6:05. Bends the hell out of the gear. Not a good advertisement for the gear.

To fly in into Airventure's Fun Fly Zone, requires a great deal of experience, and skill. You are limited to 500 feet of altitude, must fly a very stringent pattern, with a base along the side of the main runway, where the BIG guys are landing!
On final at about 75 feet you have to do a TIGHT left hand turn, level out to land uphill on a grass strip that has about 3 dips in it. If you happen to land in one it shoots you back up into the air like a ramp. OH did I mention you are usually landing in a 90 degree crosswind!
I know of MANY conventional pilots that won't even ATTEMPT to do what these ultralight pilots do several hundred times a day - in most cases very successfully. The lack of any real damage speaks to the pilots skill, and the aircraft's slow landing speed, and durability.

I loved this video report as opposed to the Dan Johnson 'infomercials', which I see as a shill for producers, rather than providing information about the aircraft/accessories.
Pertaining to the comments about the pilot bending the right landing gear, I did NOT take their comments as being derogatory to the pilot, merely as a strong notation of 'oh crap, did you see that?' to the severe damage incurred.
I DO appreciate your explanatory of the landing conditions for that strip and the very strident requirements for landing there: personally I would NOT place upon myself such a level of stress, just to say 'I've been there!'. Back country flying will be my thing, so terrain difficulties will be part and parcel of my need to command 'proper technique', but what will NOT be a part of it, is some stressed out ATC commanding me in an imperious tone, to obey his/her every jot and title for the 'privilege' of landing there.
The bottom line for me on the landing sequence is that DESPITE the severe landing results, the little plane kept right on going, and because of what looks to be a simpler design, I would no doubt want to BEEF UP the ability of the landing gear to handle MUCH MORE stress in landings.
Thank you again for a great video.

@@ultralightnews .... i am not taking away from anyone or there experience here. ! we as pilots have all had our fair share of ( not so pretty landings ) all i was pointing out was the landing gear on that plane seems to be very week and needs to be able to take much more of an impact than what was shown in the video !! .. thank you for your reply !!

Anyone know if the landing gear was redesigned after this prototype model, which flew in 2003? I was about sold until I saw the gear bend after what seemed like a fairly benign bounce. If I built it, I know I would worry about doing the same.

Impressive. Well explained. Do VW engines require twin magneto's ?
Wing drop at stall ? Spin recovery ?

So I take it you saw the original video in 2003, thus you weren't interested in seeing it again.
The craft is still available from Leonard. If you do a search of the web it is not likely you are going to find another interview with him. So yes it was done in 2003, for those that haven't seen Leonard or the Double Eagle it is their first introduction to it.
I have thousands of interviews covering the sport BEFORE the advent of light sport, the majority aircraft - you are NOT likely to see at a show anymore, but they are still available, some new others used.
The purpose of this channel and these videos is to EDUCATE and inform. I flew an Easy Riser in the late 70's - later interviewed a pilot who foot launched one at Airventure. It is part of MY past, that I am interested in preserving.
Without knowledge of OUR past - our future is uncertain.
Like the two place training exemption for ultralights, and Part 103. They both have a history, one looking good the other not so much, BUT if you don't know about it, you don't have any idea what you are missing.

@@ultralightnews You have done a great service to myself and the Aviation Community over the years for sure. No question. However... it would be nice if you would properly label (in the title and thumbnail) that a video is a "repost" (still relevant of course) AND from which year it was reposted. When we all see a "NEW VIDEO" posted we immediately think there is NEW news, material, announcements, updates on the model then only to find out several minutes later that it is 16 years old. That is all I am trying to communicate. No disrespect intended. We all very much have appreciated your efforts and life's work in promoting aviation. And... I thank you again. We are all family here. Don't let the comments get to you.

Thank you for the reply, it is great to see someone is watching. No disrespect taken. ( I am just getting a little sensitive in my old age.) I would like to point out that to my knowledge the video was not a repost - this is the first time the interview with Leonard has been on RUclips.
