At age 75, I'd been out of modeling for about 25+ years (previously building wooden model ships). Discovering this series of videos (there were about 15 of them then) was a total turn-on. I immediately purchased the Trumpeter Missouri and Pontos kits and have been in euphoria for the past 9 months. There is no way I could have gotten as far as I have without these videos, and I haven't even finished the main decks yet. Thank you for your extreme modeling skills, your generosity in sharing, and your excellent communication skills. You have certainly added some enjoyable years to this old dude's life.
My wife and I visited Pearl Harbor this past September and took the tour of the Mighty Mo and I was in awe of it's size but more so of it's history in WW2. I would love to build this model. I have checked availability and pricing. They're a few available on eBay along with the photo etch detail kits but the prices are unreal so I'll just admire your build. Thank you for sharing.
imagine having to do a 1/700 scale ship with full interior.... seats, beds, bathrooms, pipes, individual shells, magazine cranes, gun breeches, gears, bells and everything. that would be one heck of a build... also, 7:06 those canisters are probably depth charges.
My, 1/200 scale will arrive today 1/7/21. MISSOURI kit. Just the kit itself & a lot of my fellow builders at central Plastic builders are excited about it as I, am..
I'am a former resident of Illinois Born in Chicago and lived in south Cook county. Midlothian IL. Itd my home state I now live in Knox Indiana. I'am 65 years old And have ben building plastic models since 1960. I am thinking About tin canning my hull you Have done a awsome job on you're MISSOURI! Thanks for being here.
Watching your videos got me back in to model making, and gave me the confidence to do modifications to the models I work on, I’m currently building the wood base for my 1:350 scale IJN Akagi
I think you should ALWAYS go with the Seahawks. Says the guy who lives in Seattle. :) Not that I have a problem with the Kingfishers per se. Another great video!!
no they are either radar or depth charges for the ships self defense. Seahawks never carried drop tanks. The kit supplied the surface scan radar but incorrectly supplied 2 (one for each wing) when in practice the real planes only carried one... usually under the right wing.
You might try using small brass wire for your tie down cables. Would be easier to cut to length, paint and fit than trying to get in there with EZ line. Tougher too. That whole area is amazing with detail. Another fantastic video. Thanks Ben.
Is it any wonder people seek out your videos? Your modeling skills are freakin awesome! Got me amped to get make into modeling after putting it down for almost 30 years now.
I want to thank you for renewing my interest in scale model building. I got out my airbrush compressor and it still worked (heck, the tank still had air in it after almost twenty years) and the airbrushes all worked fine after cleaning. I'm almost 40% done with my 1/200 scale German Battleship Bismarck (I'd post pics but I got the scaledecks wood deck with the swastika insignia and am afraid of it causing trouble for me (and you) with RUclips. I want to do the 1/200 HMS Hood as well although I have the 1/200 scale USS Arizona in the closet for my next build. Thanks for getting an old man a (sort of) new hobby.
those canisters are either the surface scan radar or are depth charges. As these planes were used as sub scout/hunters for the ships self defense. Also, the cockpit area should have been painted interior green or zinc Chromate Green.
Seahawks never carried drop tanks, so No those are not fuel tanks... mostly likely the kit included the surface scan radar BUT incorrectly supplied 2. Seahawks only carried one. (A/c radars were painted white) or could also be the depth charges they carried similar to those carried on PBY Catalinas. seahawks were used as sub scout/hunters for the ship's self defense. Those planes never ventured "long range" from the ship since they have no real self-defense themselves... other than 2 50 cal guns and float planes make for bad dog fighters... there was a provision although rarely used for extra fuel in a bladder installed in the "internal bomb bay" of the large center float.
Did you see Trumpeter’s 1/200 Scharnhorst announcement on their website? I really hope KA models or Pontos get a detail set out for it when it come out.
Really like how you treat things like the Seahawks as individual kits. Navy convention is odd numbers to starboard, even to port so you got it right on the plane numbers.
I understood that the seahawks were put on board when the Missouri called at San Diego and Pearl Harbor in late 44 or Jan 45 prior to Pacific theater deployment. This is also about the time the ship was painted in Measure 22. Most of the kingfisher photos date to when the ship was working up in the Atlantic with the dazzle paint configuration. I noticed that you didn't use the life rafts that were stowed below the catapults. Oversight or documented "gotcha"??
Gday Ben...awsome content as usual...was just wondering what the name of those tweezers your using are mate?...i want to order a set...cheers n keep up the great work🙂👍
Ben, when you are first attaching the pieces of the catapult, what is that pink pencil looking tool you are using. It looks like it has a sticky end to pick up pieces. Where did you get it?
It’s a wax pencil. I bought a pack of them on Amazon. They are meant to be used by nail stylists for putting little jewels and things on woman’s finger nails.
Just curious why you didn't use the old school Testors model glue plastic cement for the aircraft fuselage? I know that stuff is a stringy, messy nightmare in most cases, but the fact that it literally fuses the plastic together makes it ideal for tough fits like what you were explaining here. Nothing holds like that stuff if it's all plastic and under tension.
I have kind of a very different question is trumpeter ever gonna make they 1/200 scale battleships in Iowa class motorized and made in the 1980s configuration which was equipped with missiles and Gatling guns
You can build these into RC versions yourself. As far as a 1991 build, I’m not sure they have that. You could convert it yourself without too much trouble.
You get those skills the same way he did. Practice. And especially on some smaller projects. This is a pretty big project to start out on. But I suppose it is possible. You can bet dollars to donuts that this fellow has made MANY mistakes along the way in his model building, learned from them, and also learned from others. Also, for most things there isn't one "right" way to do it. Most people discover techniques that work well for them and may be different from what some others do.
Ok, I admit, on my 1/200 USS Hornet, I didn't do any cockpits, even the B-25s. They got a coat of cockpit green on the inside and I painted the glass, that's it. Yours are just too much! :-)
7:20 not landing gear, "beaching gear" ... can't land it on a runway, but can be hauled up out of the water; not 'retracted' but removed unless beaching is in the near future.
I have a 1/350 Tamiya MISSOURI circa 1991 and a Eduard PE add on set which seems to cover 1945version. Can I use any of the PE as the 1945 version was discontinued sometime ago?

Wow, Ed! Thanks so much for sharing that! I’m doing my best for folks just like you!
First time viewer. You are a Great Inspiration!
I bought my first model in decades as a result of watching this channel. Thanks for the inspiration.
Right on!

Having watched all of the episodes, this is going to be one awesome looking ship. Thanks Ben for all the informative videos.
Thank you for watching the whole build! I appreciate it.
I got the Iowa and pontos set in stash. Will use this as a reference. Love your build.

I'm subscribed but since never see any of your videos so I have to search you when I realize I haven't seen any progress lately

This has been such an incredible series. I've learned more about working with photo etch and ship modeling in general, than just about anywhere else.
Absolutely.
I have learned a lot from you. Thank you for all your work and showing us how to put this ship together. Truly appreciated.
Man, I can’t wait until this ship is done. The work so far is outstanding
Nice job on your model can't wait till you get a nother one out be safe and enjoy what you do
Thanks for sharing this build. Don’t model much anymore but you make me want too!

Those 500 lb bombs you didn't know exactly what to do with them, are fuel tanks for longer flights! Fantastic looking my friend! Almost there!
no they are either radar or depth charges for the ships self defense. Seahawks never carried drop tanks. The kit supplied the surface scan radar but incorrectly supplied 2 (one for each wing) when in practice the real planes only carried one... usually under the right wing.
Nice update, you make to easy. Sorry forget sometimes to hit the thumbs up button.
I continue to be impressed. Great job on the aircraft.
You might try using small brass wire for your tie down cables. Would be easier to cut to length, paint and fit than trying to get in there with EZ line. Tougher too. That whole area is amazing with detail. Another fantastic video. Thanks Ben.
That's a great idea! Thanks!

That's awesome Charles! I'm eyeing the Hood. Something about it fascinates me.
Lovely work!
Great detail with the planes and the crane. You done an awesome job. Can’t wait for the finished ship
Awesome! You have major skills sir.
Another great and inspirational video, my friend!!
i did the cranes and planes on my 1/350 Yamato and my god never again, PE is fine but DAMN is that shit small
Since this one is almost done, can you whet our appetite on the next build? Also, love your builds!
Titanic is on the shelf. 1:200 scale.
Fantastic work .
Hopefully with all the PE and resin thats available.
Gonna enjoy this one😊
Nice job. Never tackled anything like this myself but can imagine the amount of work that goes into this build. Look forward to the end result 👍
Thanks 👍
Looking good!!
Think in Bull Halsey typhoon video they showed king fishers on back I will have to look again
I had the same issue with a 350 scale build of Prinz Eugene. I think its just a Trumpter thing with there clear plastic aircraft molds.
another great video
I would have left the planes off until the model was more finished definitely a candidate for getting knocked off
I’m at the point in this build where it’s time to start living on the edge.
those canisters are either the surface scan radar or are depth charges. As these planes were used as sub scout/hunters for the ships self defense. Also, the cockpit area should have been painted interior green or zinc Chromate Green.
The white canisters are extra fuel parts that were attached to the bottom of the plane for long range spotting missions
Seahawks never carried drop tanks, so No those are not fuel tanks... mostly likely the kit included the surface scan radar BUT incorrectly supplied 2. Seahawks only carried one. Looking good my man ,any idea what ship your thinking of building next
The Titanic is sitting on the shelf.
@@TheMidwestModelShop great choice sir
Did you see Trumpeter’s 1/200 Scharnhorst announcement on their website? I really hope KA models or Pontos get a detail set out for it when it come out.
Really? Guess I'm set on what ship is gonna be my first 1/200th scale then!
Viktor Larsson yep, I’m also very exited about it. I think it might be released around mid January, but we can’t be sure.
6:45 If not for bombs the hardpoints may have been for smoke canisters or a radar unit. Some of the kits have the radar included.
Yup - radar (or depth charges). Most likely radar. The kit just incorrectly supplied 2.
Really like how you treat things like the Seahawks as individual kits. Navy convention is odd numbers to starboard, even to port so you got it right on the plane numbers.

Just haven’t gotten to them yet.
Gday Ben...awsome content as usual...was just wondering what the name of those tweezers your using are mate?...i want to order a set...cheers n keep up the great work🙂👍
Honestly I’m not sure. They may be “jewelry” tweezers? Because you can slide a lock forward to keep them closed. Hope that helps!

The Tamiya does the same thing and it’s easier to apply .

Hey she's looking nice what do you do about super Glue haze
Good grief. I wish I had just a fraction of your skills.
You get those skills the same way he did. Practice. And especially on some smaller projects. This is a pretty big project to start out on. But I suppose it is possible. Nope. I just primed it with a grey so I could see what I was looking at.
7:20 not landing gear, "beaching gear" ... can't land it on a runway, but can be hauled up out of the water; not 'retracted' but removed unless beaching is in the near future.
I love the kingfisher
