This is normal low alt wind gusts. Try a EA-6B Prowler 450 Kts 200 Feet AGL on a summer Nevada Low Altitude Flight in section with a lead. Now that is a barfex.

Very simple, Sun , brown earth, heat, equals turbulence.

While certainly not smooth, far from turbulent. Sometime ride a plane where the ocean/ or a mountain is nearby and a storm going on. It will shake your teeth.
