The harm that I see is that churches don't pressure their pastors to grow the church the same way pastors pressure their youth ministers to grow the youth ministry. So right off the bat, you have unrealistic double standards. Couple that with the fact that youth ministers on average get paid nearly half what their pastor does, which creates huge financial pressures. Then the church wonders why they struggle to keep a youth pastor or why many youth pastors eventually leave youth ministry to plant a church or become a pastor. I think its time for a nationwide reformation to how the church approaches youth ministry expectations and salary, until that happens we should only expect more of the same of youth ministers leaving youth ministry, youth suffering in result, and churches failing to engage the next generation effectively.
