Wie vs was: Wie is used when asking about the properties of something, while Was is used when that something is undefined. For example, when asking for an address or name, it is assumed that there is a name/address, and we only want to know the details. So Wie is used. On the other hand, when asking, "What can we do?"/"Was können wir tun?" this does not assume that there is an answer. Then with "What's the solution?"/"Wie ist die Lösung?" we're asking about a solution that we assume (or know) exists, whereas "Was ist die Lösung?" could be translated to "Is there a solution? If so, what is it?". Wie: "What are the properties of X?" Was: "Does X exist? If so, what is it?" PS: And I'm sure there are a million exceptions where there are standing phrases that make no sense. Edit PS: A common joke answer to "Was kostet das?" is "Geld". This shows that people are aware that "was" technically is the wrong question word, even though it's a common phrase. And this also nicely shows the difference I pointed out above. Instead of narrowly asking about the property "amount" of the implied "money", this asked about what kind of thing needs to be used to pay.

Thank you! I was trying to figure out the literal translation of Wie heissen du...which breaks down to "How are you called". That makes sense. We wouldn't word it that way in English. It's another way of saying "What are you called by?".
I think it would be better if there was a nice subtitle that pays attention to pronunciation and punctuation. There is only automatic one and that's not good at all.

Du sprichst Deutsch und Englisch so klar. (Das Verb "sprechen" hat einen Stammvokalwechsel. Deshalb braucht man "sprichst" mit "du".) Ist deine Muttersprache vielleicht Englisch? (Muttersprache ist weiblich. Deshalb braucht man "deine".)
