Shogun is excellent. I've lived in Japan and it's refreshing to see Japan portrayed realistically. No weird accents. No Hollywood bias of what Japan is (sushi, ninjas, anime, etc ... nonsense).

I lived in Japan and have been watching Shogun with my Japanese wife. She also approves.

It's flawed just like all portrayals of Japan, not that realistic

@@Magnonx Yes, I agree. Portrayals either exaggerate the "elevated sensibilities" or reduce them to "inscrutable orientals". Would love to see a realistic account of this country during the Edo period. Not likely though.

One show I've recently watched from last year that I adore has been "Silo" on Apple TV and I would love to hear your thoughts on it. It's a wonderfully intense sci-fi thriller starring Rebecca Ferguson.

I enjoyed Shogun a lot. I am very into Japanese history and metalwork. I thought they made Blackthorn much less shrewd in the show than he was in the book.
    Fallout was enjoyable all around.
    The Gentleman was excellent.
Haven't seen Baby Reindeer, but I will check it out. Your review is the first bit of information I have gotten about it outside of watching the trailer.
Haven't watched any of the cops shows you mentioned outside of Broadchurch and the first episode of Bodyguard, also enjoyed Richard Madden in the first few episodes of Citadel.
Looking forward to this Sunday's premiere of Interview with the Vampire season 2. I really enjoy this show, because they nailed the Lestat character. Watch, enjoy, and review. There is a whole season you can catch up on.

Shogun has been top dog since episode 1. I expect it to hold the top til the end of the year
X-Men 97 has been surprisingly great!

Bodyguard and Broadchurch (season 1 ONLY of course) were such great shows. I had a little difficulty getting into Line of Duty straight after watching those two shows but since it has been a few years I think I'll give it another go. UK police/crime dramas are my jam but I have yet to enjoy anything related to Harlan Coben. Maybe it's more of a niche thing?
I had low expectations with Shogun due to my condition of remake-itis but it ended up being a personal favourite of mine of the past decade. Fallout helped fill the void I felt after Shogun was over. I've been jonesing for some show recommendations so I really appreciate the list you made. Cheers!

I couldn't get into The Gentlemen but perhaps I'll give it another go. I find a lot of British productions VERY tropey on British cliches (I''m English which may have something to do with it haha). Otherwise we have been blessed with two excellent shows so far that I've seen, Fallout and Shogun. We also have HOD season 2 coming but I'm a little nervous about that one. Season 1 set a very high standard.

I swore that I'd watch 'Shogun' i real time, but i simply couldn't find the time. So will get around to it. The tv landscape is so barren, i can't remember a time where it was this barren. Next Up: rewatching HotD before season 2 drops!
(Erik, in case you weren't aware, you got a name drop from Ryan Kinel in his Superman video)

Another older Police tv show you might like if you haven't already seen it is the Swedish/Danish Bron/Broen "The Bridge" from 2011, there is a British-French version called "The Tunnel" but in my opinion the original version is superior.
I would agree that so far this year Shogun is the best tv show, I also mostly enjoyed Fallout.

Not 100% sure but I think Jeff Goldblum's Rains 2007 is the same show as Stellan Skarsgård's River 2015.

Baby Reindeer was way too much dark for my own good so I stopped it during the 4th episode.
Shogûn, Beef, Sugar and Ripley are the best I have seen this year and all have a complete story in just a feww episodes.

Great to have you back with both barrels blazing. I am going to disagree with you about Shogun though, as I thought it was more of a portrayal of Japan as Japanese want to be portrayed rather than any kind of reality--something like our classic westerns as compared to what it was really like back then. First off, making any cultural judgements by comparing scurvy-ravaged sailors who have been at sea for months with the nobility of Japanese society is highly disingenuous. Hate to burst bubbles, but the average Japanese was not lounging about in hot springs and reciting poetry and spouting snippets of philosophical wisdom whenever they opened their mouths. They were the 90% barely subsisting under the yoke of a brutal feudal system. Most scenes in this series felt like a set piece of cultural aggrandizement--here we speak poetry, here we speak wise aphorisms, here we bathe in harmony with nature, here we move about as automatons, and on and on. Representing the west, a duck-walking Blackthorn who is more buffoon than badass. Which totally undercuts the love interest angle here--no way is this romance supported by what we are given. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, this Japanese noble woman is unable to keep herself from falling into the arms of this doofus? Just no. Finally, this show dragged so much, replacing story with exoticism. Strip that away, and there isn't much there, there. To me, this show was truly modern kabuki theater.
