I originally explained this lick in 2014 with one camera for video & sound. I redid it with my Pearl Masterworks kit recorded with Audix Mics for clear sound.
If you liked this video, there's more coming now that I have this kit and the mics and interface! Please like, comment, share & subscribe!
    ~Jeff Wald~
    Video recorded with a Zoom Q4 video camera (www.amazon.com/...) and a SJCam 5000+ (www.amazon.com/...)
    Masterworks specs:
The kit is basically in Pearl Reference Specs except all have at least 2 plies of mahogany on the inside (which is stained red) and adding 4 plies w/ the floor and even more mahogany with the Gong & kicks. The rest of the plies in each are maple except for the snare.
    Toms (Mic’d with Audix D2)
    6x7" Rack Tom
    8x7.25" Rack Tom
    10x7.75" Rack Tom
    12X8.5" Rack Tom
    13x9.5" Rack Tom on left
Floor Toms (Mic’d with Audix D4)
    14x13" Floor Tom
    16x15" Floor Tom
    Snare (Mic’d with Audix i5)
14x5.75". 10 ply - 2 inner birch, 7 maple, outer bubinga. It also has the triple snare throw off. This thing looks amazing and lets you choose 3 different 6 strand snares allowing you to mix and match all of them
Gong Drum (Mic’d with Audix D6)
20x15"- 8 ply. All mahogany except the bubinga on the outside. Finish is a fade from the head down instead of the burst like the rest b/c of it being single headed
Kick Drums (Mic’d with Audix D6s)
22x17 kicks. 10 plies - 6 inner are mahogany - BOOM!! The outer 3 plies are maple and the outside bubinga.
    Cymbals from left to right:
17” Sabian Xtreme China regular finish
8” Sabian Splash in brilliant finish
14” Hi-Hats: K Custom Session (Steve Gadd model)
18” Zildjian K Custom Fast Crash
22” K Custom Session Ride (Steve Gadd model)
14” Zildjian Trash Hats - 13” A Custom Mastersound on Top, 14” Zildjian Oriental on bottom
    19” Zildjian K Dark Crash

That was great! I think of it as an open roll (doubles) displaced by a 32nd note, or an inversion of an open roll. That samba analogy was pretty helpful. Also, the drums sound great!!!

Thanks for the update ... revisited video on the Steve Gadd "flutter lick". I watched the first one a few months ago and am trying to get this down clean and to speed. Gadd, one of the greats. Nice video. My only objection is that he's very singular in his style and playing, a lot of drummers copy him note for note and don't really stray from that. I appreciate others taking from him and expanding from there.

Frickin love this! Gadd was in maximum funk mode then... Good god what a pocket. How does Steve groove that hard? He's playing a simple groove, but when he plays it, it had a bounce. It dances. Obviously he has swing like crazy, but his feel goes beyond that somehow... Kills me. To me, this Gadd "lick" is so amazing because it's like he can decorate the beat (for lack of another term) and still keep that deep, beautiful groove right where it is. Thanks for the breakdown Jeff! I just discovered your channel today and I'm really diggin it. I can relate to your influences and sensibilities I think. Love it!

    • @JeffWald
      @JeffWald  7 лет назад

Great lesson THANK YOU! Man what's up with the strainer on your snare? Do you have an option of three levels of snare strain? Thats ingenious! Where did you find it and what is it called?? Peace from Detroit MI.

    • @JeffWald
      @JeffWald  2 года назад

I missed this! That's a symphonic strainer but it was an available option when I ordered the kit so I went with it. You can have up to 3 different 6 strand strainers on it to mix and match and I did for a little while but now I just have a regular 24 strand connected to the outer 2 levers and the middle one has nothing. I shot a video last weekend of the shell config of the kit and I do flip the snare over in that video, so I hope to have that up soon

Steve gadd's book of rudiments page 3 exercise 1 will teach you how to displace beats.... The flutter lick is one beat displaced from the first groove..... So you basically got two rhythms that are syncopated off of each other?...

You slowing down because you lifting the stick to make the back back..... If you look at Steve's forearm it's sharply angled so he's pulling back instead of lifting up and hitting the snare with with right arm. I think it's more effective, but thanks for the great lesson. I really got a lot of that of this in a short period of time. I appreciate it very much

Thanx Andy! Its a fun thing to apply and to put in strategic places. I think my favorite that Steve did, and the VERY first time I ever heard it, was in Tour De Force Live, Al Di Meola. I think it was Egyptian Danza where it went into that really "spacey" sound and Steve broke into this. Wow. 40 yrs later its still just as amazing

Thanks Jeff! I have a question: is it the same concept with Gadd's usual mid and floor tom lick?

Sorry I missed this! I'm not exactly sure which lick you're talking about BUT I do know that he uses this sticking ALOT and it always sounds amazing
