Good radio just gets hot on high power. Also don’t use the cigarette lighter sockets ever .

I run mine on either 5 or 10 watts into a 5/8 mag mount on my SUV. Reliable repeater connections to about 60 miles on 10watts.
I use the power plug (cigarette type) so I can remove radio from vehicle easily.

I purchased this radio to replace my FT1900 that lost receive audio. Strange thing, if I turn off squelch I have audio, but if I turn up squelch it shuts off audio on receive. I did hard reset and reprogrammed and same problem. Transmit is fine with great audio. The FT2980 seems to work just fine...so far.

My 2980 has default 12.5khz step. Every time I have to go into the settings to make it to 5Khz step. How to make it default 5Khz step.
