  • Well, it seems that Norfolk has been plagued with HST's this past month with a total of 5+ HST moves across the county.
Today saw 2 moves heading to Great Yarmouth from two starting points.
Move 1: Class 43 43366 & 43239 in the CrossCountry livery albeit without the branding are seen passing Attleborough in the early frosty morning at around 8:30am. The driver of this service must have been in a happy mood as he sounded the horn at least 10+ times past Attleborough (all captured within the video). The Powercars hauled 6 Mk3's fitted with Sliding Doors in the CrossCountry livery with the branding also removed. This ran from Ely Papworth Sidings to Yarmouth C.H.S. on 5Q43.
Move 2: Class 43 43304 and 43184 were seen later in the day at Eccles Road. 43184 was the first powercar that CrossCountry repainted into a retro livery to celebrate the end of the XC HST's, this livery being Intercity Executive (the powercar was also named 'Laira Diesel Depot' before its move to Yarmouth). This was just two powercars back to back running from Neville Hill Depot in Leeds to Yarmouth on 0Q48.
    Trains Featured:
Class 43 - 43184 (was previously named 'Laira Diesel Depot')
    Class 43 - 43239
    Class 43 - 43304
    Class 43 - 43366

What a plus, still being used instead of being scrapped 😊 Pity the same can't be said about the fastest 3rd rail trains in the world, the 442s 😢 I expect that when my beloved 159s come to their end (lovely to drive), they too will be in demand.

no, the line to the dock has been long gone. They are taken to Eastern Rail Services sidings just west of the modern day Great Yarmouth station then a convoy of three low loaders take them to the docks

We always got the old dross on the Norwich - London line.
Whilst the GWR & LNER routes had these HSTs since the '70s, we had rattly old Mk1 carriages and Class 31s (I think) and then Mk2 carriages through the '90s, by which time the LNER route had Mk4 carriages !

Before the air-braked Mk.2s entered service in the mid-1970s (soon after I started working in the Norwich Divisional Manager's Office on Prince of Wales Road), the Norwich trains were vacuum-braked Mk.1s usually hauled by 47s, with occasional 37s or even 31s if a 47 were unavailable.

I think what with all the engine upgrades they all had 10 - 20 years ago they should of stayed here until they were run into the ground. But what do I know. Perhaps the rail company's know there is only a couple of years of reliability left in them, but they are keeping that under there hats to the new owners 😂

As far as I'm aware the "Blue Pullman" set is a purely commercial charter train by LCS (one of three), and not preserved. There are a dozen power cars actually preserved, including 3 by 125 Heritage who I understand are also collecting Mk3's to make a train.
