It's for two purposes; 1) To deaden the vibration of the strings beyond the nut and tighten the sound up. 2) It can be slid up over the first couple of frets to act as a string dampener when recording intricate parts with no open notes in them. As for specifics, I personally use 2.5" diam. hair scrunchies that I "borrow" from my wife on all of my guitars to the same end, as they don't squeeze on the strings hard enough to throw it out of tune, and they feel good under the hands to boot. To my ears, it makes stop/start rhythm parts sound alot tighter and cleaner. If the first aspect is something you are interested in, and you should be, quite frankly lol, you can use a piece of pliable packing foam (the soft, gray/black kind, not the white kind which will just make a mess) under the strings as well, or you could use a piece of electrical tape ran underneath the strings and then bent over and stuck on top of itself just as effectively. Those last two methods aren't pretty, but they work if you don't have a woman around to steal scrunchies from lol.
surgeyx ...or you could use a 10 cent hair scrunchy that does exactly the same thing just as well...... I think that qualifies as "super cheap." Before "answering" peoples' questions, you should probably check to make sure someone else hasn't already done so. Those "fret-wrap" makers saw you coming from a mile away.
