Dre is dre, Tupac is tupac, Biggie biggie, the greats are who they are, and even though he never reached the level of these guys Erick Sermon has the distinction of having made the greatest song ever, Music. Period.
For me one of the things that is missing out of 1990's Hip-hop music scene that DJ Premier didn't have a "Chronic" like album with various NYC acts, I think that project would've been GREAT
+EDeck The Chronic wasn't an album with various westcoast artists though nor would I say Dre produced a Chronic like album with several westcoast artist. He only has The Chronic and Doggystyle that are considered top tier albums.
I think true hip-hoppers generally agree that Premo is better, if not the best, that Boom Bap sound that's he's made his own....on so many top tracks is far away from anyone
Dre's the most overrated producer in the world. Listen to "I need a doctor". That track, by the so-called "perfectionist", you can literally hear the edits in Dre's verse. His beats are corny as fuck. Premier as far as I'm concerned is right up there with Jam Master Jay & Flash as one of the greatest in hip hop. RIP Guru.
Daniel S you are obviously ignorant and not getting the whole truth. You obviously dnt know exactly what goes on in a studio room let alone DRE'S production room. Sad tht you think producing on a level like Prem and Dre is easy.

i wasnt even talkin to you dude. I don't even want to at this point, you lost me when you spewed that "real Hip Hop" bullshit, oohhh man LMAO here we go again.
Chris Goomba Tbh the majority of premo's sound outside of the way he intertwined the scratches with his beats are quite easy to recreate. Dre improved with the times but Premo now still sounds as he always did. That's why in the long run I would have to go with Dre.
this is the same thing with tupac and biggie, they always mention the most famous ones but never the ones that are actually lightyears better than them
continued: 5. Q-Tip 6. Ski 7. N.O. Joe 8. Jesse West 9. Neptunes 10. EA-Ski 11. Domino 12. Erick Sermon 13. DJ Clark Kent 14. No I.D 15. Salaam Remi 16. Daz and so on and so on!!
What "musicians" does Premo have?? Aside from the ORIGINAL ARTISTS he samples, Premo doesn't have a team of CO-PRODUCERS to help him craft his music. I defy you to NAME some "musicians" who has helped Premo with his hits.
I always saw it as Premier makes the pure hip-hop beats with the traditional mixing and scratching, while Dre makes hip-hop grooves that you can chill and bob your head to. They are both at the top of the game at what they do.
Odd that NO ONE mentioned The BeatNuts. Two latino legends that could not have been taken lightly due to their ill rhyme schemes and VERY innovative sound as far as production goes. Let's not forget ATCQ's Luck of Lucien produced by Les and JuJu. They may not be in a "greatest" convo but should definitely be honorably mentioned especially for being able to bring that latin sound to their beats and still uphold an emcee's distinct style with no compromise.
Primo on the other hand is much simpler in comparison and his beats show a more raw creativity. You hear people talking about using the sampler as a paintbrush instead of a Xerox machine, he's one of the true masters of that. Where Dre goes more a polished, musical sound, DJ Premier goes for the nod factor.
That's the same damn thought that occurred to me, as well, but then again, if going by the 'information' on that OP's channel, being nineteen years of age, then, it makes perfect sense why you'd get a comment like that. He's a new born.
I can't list my favorites because there are simply too many, so I'll list the best 1. DJ Premier (THE GREATEST EVER!) 2. Marley Marl (The pioneer!) 3. Pete Rock 4. RZA (Big innovator!) 5.Dr. Dre. 6. Bomb Squad (Big innovators) 7. Large Professor 8. Diamond D 9. Easy Mo Bee 10. Lord Finesse 11. Showbiz 12. Buckwild 13. J Dilla 14. Da Beatminerz 15.Timbaland Honorable Mentions 1. Trackmasters INCLUDING L.E.S. 2. Puffy's Hitmen team INCLUDING THE MIGHTY Ez Elpee 3. Organized Noize 4. DJ Quik......
The reason people rate Dre so high besides being the highest selling producer in rap and being in one of the top 3 most influential groups of all time is because he changed the entire game of hip-hop AND indirectly pop production at least twice. He has or had an excellent ear for talent and high skill in developing ALBUMS (very important once upon a time). On a side note, he also introduced whats known as the "loudness wars" to hip hop productions.
People often criticize DJ Premier for his heavy sampling, but what about Dre? Dre has a squad of musicians that work with him, like Scott Storch, Mike Elizondo, Neff-U, Dawaun Parker, Mark Batson, etc. These dudes are the actual musicians, and Dre just programs the drums and does the final mixdowns. So if Preemo loses points for sampling, then Dre looses MORE points for having a team of musicians. It's better to compare Preemo to Pete Rock, and Dre to Diddy. lol
like sermon said you cant compare them, dre is more creative than premo, premo works with samples almost 100% of the time and dre creates his own sounds most of the time
well all do respect to both dj premire and dre,i love them both but i'm east coast til i die..premo is an inovator and he was before his time, far as mixing and scratching goes..dre stands out also and i dig his steelo..peace
You are correct in saying that Dre makes his own BEATS. Yes, he does, but he doesn't COMPOSE THE SONGS. As I said before, the musicians that he has in his camp do much of the actual music, and Dre does the BEAT and engineers the sessions. Again, check the credits on his work. I've been doing it for decades.
Dre is a more ambitious than Premier. He employs many of the industry's best producers and fuses his style with theirs, which allows him to adapt to changing trends and stay relevant, and appealing to those outside of just the Hip Hop community, whereas Premier's style is simply traditional, sample based Hip Hop. You're not likely to find him hiring other producers or musicians and he isn't trying to appeal to those who don't already accept Hip Hop.
Both have created CLASSIC instrumentals, but I think Premier beats Dre by just a little, for the simple fact, Premier pretty much makes himself readily available for artists of all levels of fame, from a virtual nobody, to house hold names like Jay-Z, and Christina Aguilera. Dre is too picky about who he will work with and thus works with far fewer artists, however, Dre does utilize young talent on the production end, and the artists he do work with, ALWAYS achieve GREAT success.
I've been a loyal follower of hip-hop since I was 6, 7 years old and been a production head since the same time, I'm 33 now, Dre is a legend mistake no mistake but I'm talking about making beats and the true art of it, chopping samples, blending them, basslines, drum programming, drum patterns etc. Pete Rock is a top three ALL time beat maker for me. I also put RZA ahead of him as well. Just my opinion but a lot of people have Pete Rock above Dre as well.
dj premo in some interview said that he never touched keyboard. he does music beats productio still like back in the days. and also said bring any one in front of him in beat making from scratch.
Nobody is hating........YOU MUST BE FROM THE WEST COAST!! lol. If I were hating, I would have said DRE is GARBAGE! Now THAT'S hating!! Nobody can deny Dre's greatness, but facts are facts. I challenge you to show me 10 songs from Dre's Production Catalog that has him as the SOLE COMPOSER (not including the rappers' lyric credit, of course). I'm a fan of Dre's music, since the days of World Class Wreckin' Cru, NWA, The D.O.C., etc., but the VAST majority of his work has been collaborative.
continued: then Dre because they're innovators as well. Longevity wise, Dre is higher then Pete but as far as musicality wise and producing for a wide range of different MC's Pete Rock broke out before Dre did, that's why I have Pete Rock higher then Dre. Hey, what's your top 5 ALL TIME hip-hop producers list, just curious??
And to say that Dre doesn't sample only FURTHER proves that you haven't done your homework. EVERYTHING from NWA & The Posse up to CHRONIC 2001 were based on samples, in addition to the work that his studio musicians contributed. Dig deeper, my Brother............and there's nothing wrong with Dre sampling, it's the essence of Hip Hop. Sampling is what made Dre as great as he is, because he did it in a way that few were able to match him, same thing with Premier, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, etc.
There are both at the top of the games ... DJ premier has dont some of the greatest Hip beats of all time, but as a producer and enginner ... Dre.. hear things we dont hard and differently and that is the greatness of Him
Yeah I know I really wanted to put DJ Clark Kent there instead of Timbaland but I went out on a limb. Timbaland is dope as fuck and can do hip hop beats. Rick Rubin is an important architect in hip hop, definitely. Teddy Riley is actually a more important producer then almost half of the people on my list.
Dre is good but gets too much credit, he has other producers make beats an then he puts his name on them an masters them like he did to Daz Dillenger and DJ Quick.
+dlkc2000 7 out of 10 Dre tracks are replays of older tracks; the other 3 are made by someone else & claimed by Dre..dre is the worlds best MIXDOWN master when it comes to HIP HOP music tho..
I think it is going to come down to 2 things, yes, they both are greats but, lol 1) if you are a producer yourself and can critique the work of both Dre & Premier then you will have a more logic conclusion of ranking the two Producers. 2) decisions on who is better will come down to where you are from. Or what sound you like more. They both capture the city so masterfully and give you that sound of NY or LA. I love DJ Premier production. But again it's where I am from. DJ Premier can get me home regardless where I am in the world, play his catalog and off I go back home. And the same for Dr.Dre for those who love California hip-hop. Dre can take you home as well. (IDGAF if you disagree about my comment.)
to be honest Erik Sermon as a producer is on par with both Dre and Premier he can do funk as well as that far out stuff Premier does he is underrated and underused! I dare anyone to counter my statement about Erick!
@johnnytijeras dude, I prefer Premier too, Gand Starr is one of my all time favorites, I even can put Primo and GURU on top of my list in HipHop. But I think that sayin that Dre was all buyin his beats and others were helping him through his career is not right. Take Eminem's albums man, you heard lot of crazy music in them by Dre. You cannot say that Eminem's career is not one of the biggest pages in todays HipHop. and if there wasn't Dre, than there wouldn't be Eminem too.
@TheWaxMinister Hid did speak about production... Dre didn't do any of Snoop's or the Chronic's beats... It was RBX, Mel-man, Scott Storch, etc etc etc.... And I've heard that DJ Yella was really doing a lot of the NWA stuff. Preemo has always done 100% of his own production.. It's not even a contest when it comes to "real" hip hop producers..
All depends were you From . I cant Bump Dj Premier in my hood in Cali his music don't relate to what pops off in Cali , same could be said if I lived in NYC and I tried to bump Dre.
+Andre Cordero que'?? Preemo Beats are universal... Check out the album he did with MC Eiht and you have the best of both worlds ONE LOVE!!! From your CALI brother Inglewood to Hollywood!!
Dj premier hands down dre nice with the lyrics his production is tight but i want a real hip hop song with cutting and scratching well premier and jazzy jeff and dj scratch is who im going to see but im froom Brooklyn Tomkins projects so my opinion might not count
@johnnytijeras You can't forget about his NWA and Snoop productions as well as the chronic. I guess Dre has become more of a traditional music producer today, rather than a dude who sits there with his keyboard or MPC. Ignoring Dre is ignoring a huge part of the early succesful hip hop in the music world. Besides, why you talking about writing? This is about production.
@shane700828 Are you serious?. You can see dre did the chronic because you can hear the use of breakbeats and the way the music is sequenced in the NWA material and in "the chronic" which was made right after he left NWA. You can also hear the similarities in the D.O.C.'s album which he produced. You're referring to "the chronic 2001" which was way after dre PROVED HIMSELF. DRE IS THE MAN AS WELL AS PREMIER.
It's hard to say. Skill wise Premo was just ok but he pretty much invented a east coast sound while people took it to another level. Dre did the same thing west coast wise. BUT later on he kept improving his sound his stuff between 2001 - 2006 is just genius shit. I would have to say Dre because he moves with the time but still keeps his own sound, Premo his beats now sound the same as they did years ago and are not that hard to recreate. Best IMO would be Dilla however. Madlib as well and people like Just Blaze and FlyLo are there even though Flylo has a different direction he takes it instead of hip hop.
If a person likes jazz inspired production then they'll probably pick Premo over Dre, and if the person is into funk inspired production then they'll like Dre more...It comes down to a matter of preference because when you listen to timeless, unique beats like Mass Appeal, it's kinda hard to say that Premo is any less of a genius than Dre or Dilla. For newer producers, I'd put Black Milk and Hi Tek up there with Madlib, FlyLo and the rest...
The dj Life I can recall the day’s of just palse-mixing, when i was about 12 yrs. old I palse mixed, to planet rock on the radio, me & this guy name, robert use too play tapes, for each other. just too hear who was mixing better. but, when i move to Cali, got a few buck’s, together, I went to get my first set of turntables, 2 fisher belt driven, turntables & a mixer, from radio-shack, realistic joint ! from the book Brutally Honest / by Aaron Waugh / on AMAZON
lifestraight u trippin dre's whole catalog from his ruthless days r top tier albums, niggaz4life sold 2 million without radio play, it's also the first hardkore rap album to hit #1 on the billboard charts but hey that's your opinion
Music and Dance are two of the main vehicles of transferring information from one generation to the next in all societies. The sooner Africans wake up and realize that fact the better they will be world-wide. Control African culture, You control their direction. Who owns,Rock,RNB,Jazz,Soul, and now Hip Hop. Not Africans. Who owns Chinese, Indian culture? They do. CULTURE PROTECTS PEOPLE FROM THEIR OWN IGNRANCE.
Premier is a better beatmaker but Dre is the better producer, visionary, & engineer. Just think about the stars Dre has made. Eazy E Ice Cube Snoop Dogg Eminem 50 Cent Game Need I say more??
Sermon is a better producer than Dre. Dre whole image and standing is a premeditated hype.. Everybody knows he has a team of Producers who he takes beats from or add his lil shit to and then take all or most credit. Neff-Um Mel Man, Eric B, Quik.. ETC.
D.J. Premier has more "grit" in his productions. More live scratching on the hooks.
Dr. Dre' has more live musicians & polished mixes.... Both are PHENOMS!
ERIC EPPS pete rock is the shit.
True!!!!
Facts. Water and Fire. Earth and Air.
Prince and micheal Jackson
Dr Dre is like thomas Edison..he had a great team of producers and he gets all the credit...primo is like nikola telsa
King Anthony thank you! Couldn’t have said it better myself
Same when compared too dj quik
not true at all. no offense or disrespect intended but people have no clue whats really going on. No, Dre is not the worlds greatest beatmaker, hes one of the greatest producers and engineers to ever live. theres a reason nobody Dre has ever worked with has ever been able to put together anything close to the level of the things his name is the main credit on.
t homas E dison
Pete Rock and DJ Premiere are the two best producers in my opinion. Pure hip-hop.
real talk! I was down wutang from day one ... but RZA is whack! no disrespect intended!
I don't get DRE's beats. It's far too repetitive! No one can come close to the way Pete Rock removes all sample evidence!
+Louise Belcher RZA, wack? Have you heard Only Built For Cuban Linx? Liquid Swords? Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers?
RZA good but no where CLOSE to preme AND dRE STATUS.

Illmatic

I don't blame Erick Sermon for repeating what he's been saying over and over cause he's right. We do need a balance.
In front of that "box" (sp1200, MPC), NOBODY beats Premier.
He is the original boom bap. Snare is always sharp
I also feel like Pete Rock influenced Premier and visa versa
Pete rock on sp was better, premo prime was like 95 to early 2002ish (great run).
What "musicians" does Premo have?? Aside from the ORIGINAL ARTISTS he samples, Premo doesn't have a team of CO-PRODUCERS to help him craft his music. I defy you to NAME some "musicians" who has helped Premo with his hits.

Both Dre & Premier are my favorite rap producers of all time hands down
Too different legends, I can't compare and say who is better.

Actually Erick Sermon is underrated as a producer and especially as a rapper, dope voice and style
Dr Dre is perfectionist.

Think of the East it's Dj Premier and that sound, the West it's usually Dre and his sound...... Both define their coasts IMO.

Premo took a bunch of different sounds and created a track cat was genius no doubt
You cannot say that Eminem's career is not one of the biggest pages in todays HipHop. and if there wasn't Dre, than there wouldn't be Eminem too.
right about the balance thing
i love dr.dre but Primo is better
Love Erick Sermon.
Dr Dre has a team of producers helping him, Preemo doesn't. Both legendary in what they produce.
80 shows a year?!! That's crazy!
shhiiit preeem puts more in his music when you listen to his sounds..hes just knows how to keep that funky base line
best rap voice by a mile
All depends were you From . I cant Bump Dj Premier in my hood in Cali his music don't relate to what pops off in Cali , same could be said if I lived in NYC and I tried to bump Dre.
+Andre Cordero que'?? Preemo Beats are universal... Check out the album he did with MC Eiht and you have the best of both worlds ONE LOVE!!! From your CALI brother Inglewood to Hollywood!!
Nigga where the fuck in Cali you from the Woods??? Cuz Preemo is universal and Niggaz love Dre in NY........fuc you talking about????
Preemo has worked with snoop, mc eiht, lady of rage, WC etc. Dre has worked with Nas, jay z, busta etc. Haha get outta here with that bs man
PETE ROCK is in the MIX too. #CLASSICBeatMakers
I'm go whit premo
real talk, if you read this Pemo we love you baby!!!!!!
Premo is definitely one of the greats. Also respect to Pete Rock and Rza
only on some tracks
Dj premier hands down dre nice with the lyrics his production is tight but i want a real hip hop song with cutting and scratching well premier and jazzy jeff and dj scratch is who im going to see but im froom Brooklyn Tomkins projects so my opinion might not count
Premo is the best STREET producer and Pharell,Dre etc. are the best Mainstream producers.
Dj Premier CAN'T BE COMPARED
Dre got bigger because he had a team of producers, one being a legend like scott starch who made all the big bangers for most of dre projects.
Agree dre had team of producers including dj khalil, scott starch, mel man and many more under his own label.
Word up, I couldnt have said it better myself.
Bring balance to the force young Skywalker
@shane700828
Are you serious?.
EPMD were better than Gang Starr or NWA, Prem is better than Dre, although the Chronic is funky as ferk.
Bruh, in terms of straight rap production, Premier takes it any day
On fucking Point Like Bow and Arrow equipment...
Dj premier is so much more creative than Dre no question..
For newer producers, I'd put Black Milk and Hi Tek up there with Madlib, FlyLo and the rest...
madlib is in no way shape or form new lmao
Lone Star VII
I actually meant 'newer' as in producers who came after Premo and Dre...use your imagination a little.
but then you said dilla. he is just as new as madlib. Use your sense a little.
Lone Star VII
Dilla did come AFTER Premo and Dre, bug brain. Talking to people like you is like sniffing glue.
Dougie Fresh actually has four albums.
why erick sermon sound like he about to cry every time he talks
@johnnytijeras good points
The dj Life
I can recall the day’s of just palse-mixing,
when i was about 12 yrs. old I palse mixed, to planet rock on the radio, me & this guy name, robert use too play tapes, for each other.
just too hear who was mixing better.
but, when i move to Cali, got a few buck’s, together, I went to get my first set of turntables, 2 fisher belt driven, turntables & a mixer, from radio-shack, realistic joint !
from the book Brutally Honest / by Aaron Waugh / on AMAZON
exactly!!
lifestraight u trippin dre's whole catalog from his ruthless days r top tier albums, niggaz4life sold 2 million without radio play, it's also the first hardkore rap album to hit #1 on the billboard charts but hey that's your opinion
Eazy E
Ice Cube
Snoop Dogg
Eminem
50 Cent
Game
Need I say more??
Sermon is a better producer than Dre. Dre whole image and standing is a premeditated hype.. Everybody knows he has a team of Producers who he takes beats from or add his lil shit to and then take all or most credit. Neff-Um Mel Man, Eric B, Quik.. ETC.
Bud'da, Sam Sneed, Stu-B-Doo etc etc etc...
Q-Tip ATCQ Dj Khalil is personal fav aka Doppelganger
Premier all day his beats are much more complex and deeper than dre's....
Premo is starting to lose steam too.
Great points but comparing dre to diddy is silly
