The original Area 88 is drasticly more brutal and honest then the 2004 Area 88 remake and this video realy makes that tell. The new version is more of a kids show which makes the viewer feel kinda bad for Shin. In contrast; the original leaves the viewer feeling true, true hate on a personal level toward Kanzaki. Few storries can do that; particularly in anime. It realy is an exseptonal piece of work.
Hell yeah. This is still my favorite anime of all time. I discovered it only after playing the video games for Super Nintendo and Arcade, called "UN SQUADRON" for the amerikan release. This will always have a place in my heart.
Same here (well one of them, don't rate that way), found it by mistake while reading up on certain aircraft. I love an "anti-war" story that's not pacific ramblings but a story about the Esperance, a bit like "All Quiet on the Weston Front" in the sky. If they ever do a live action this would be a great source... the comics are too long and the series too mainstream.
Well in the manga the main character manages to kill Kanzaki, but due to wounds suffered in battle, he suffers total amnesia about its service as mercenary.Inthe movie Shin is concerned about return to home, not actively seeking revenge against Kanzaki, but unfortunately war has corrupted him making a cold man, that only truly lives during the bloody aerial battles. The most disturbing and intriguing thing is that Shin decides by himself to cut its ties with happiness(Ryoko) to embrace war
Interestingly enough, it may be noted as an interesting sidelight that while it may seem a discrepancy for what looks like a Sweedish Viggin fighter to be presant in a foreighn squadron in spite of the fact that the Sweeds don't allow export of them it is not nescesarily correct to automaticaly assume that this is so. Isrial (yes i know my spelling is bad) has a plane called the Kiffer which is esentialy a hybrid version of the Merage-III and Viggin fighters. Simaler shape ane function.
Don't sweat it too much thats not the only problem in there as far as the contet of the actual footage and animation goes. At 3:25 there is an F/A-18 geting blown from the sky. As i understand it, the story takes place in the early eighties at the latest. I'm pretty sure it was almost impossible for any coutry other than the US to be supplied with them, much less mercenaries in the middle east.
@TheTwinvince consider that manga was created in late 70s and until late 80s there were aviable mig-31 or mig-29 photos plus mig-25 was a short mach 3 interceptor and recon plane, so we see only mig-21 (even if they aren't so different from distance to a sukhoi 17). Until the end of Cold War many soviet planes were shrouded with mistery and in the 2004 area 88 version we see tu-95 bear and mig 17 plus correct fighter mig-23 (mig 27 was a ground attack version of mig-23)
@cid76 correction , there were no photos about modern 4th generation soviet fighters until final years of Cold War and since Area 88 OVA was created in 1985-1986, the last dangerous phase of cold war before Gorbachev 's perestrojka, well..tha japanese animators were extremely good with so few Soviet data at their disposal
The only strange thing is at 2.42, where we see a F-14 squadeon dropping napalm bombs in Vietnam. The F-14 Tomcat was an interceptor for air superiority and unfortunately never very good as payload and perfomance as mud-eater/ground attack and more importantly it appeared on Vietnam first time during Saigon evacuation from USA in 1975. Very strange IMHO, perhaps a chronological error?
It's common to make clips on Area in the form of a plain series of air-battles. This perspective is closer to me, a kind of an anti-war saga, and beautifully done and the music choice. By the way, OVA's are more solid and interesting than te TV-12)
@Kerian23 these clips are from the original Area 88 OAV's from the 80's there is a new version from 2004 which is good but not as good as the originals
The OVA was more about what being a soldier was, and how it changes the men and women that fight in them. The remake held to that, but emphasized the interactions between the characters a bit more. It wasn't as solely about how Shin, a civilian pilot turns into a war driven fighter pilot.
You're going about it wrong, japanese animation has shows for both adults and children. Most cartoons are not for adults in the US. But, the US has some of the best live action television series in the world meant for adults, so I think it evens out, imo.
After much searching to figure what the back story of U.N. Squadron is I have found out that it was this Anime. I never knew what the A - 88 on the run ways and even who was the one who had the unicorn on the tail. The game as brilliant as it is. It's quite vague. I even wondered what the Briefing guy and even the shop keeper sounded like. This anime shined so many lights in to many darkened corners and even shown and light darkened corners that I never even knew about. Good song, Good video.
Well I possess the old VHS for all 3 OVA (or perhaps 2 OVA and 1 movie), and we see at 1m 16s the F-20 tigershark (appeared in 1984 as prototype in real life). Anyway in the anime wesee for few seconds the date of the contract: 1979, so that means that the area 88 service is between 1979 and 1982-1983. The anime is 1985-1986 and probably swedish and american companies didn't give authorisation for the use of Eagles and Drakkens, so they used the cooler airplanes aviable as license.
You have to take into account though cid76 that these are mercenaries. They have one aircraft and they have to tool it out to the missions they fly. I'm sure those guy's primary objective was air cover, but were given bombs in case too many of the ground attack craft were destroyed, etc. #Knightlyfrog - F/A-18 introduced in '83, Australia got some in '89, so you can kinda stretch it a lil bit.
That's what we call 'Portrayal of Reality' OF COURSE its violent! American cartoons are for children only, but Japanese cartoons are for adults and people who appreciate some seriousness when watching cartoons
welp modern air combat is less likely about knife fighting air, more like gathering intelligence, protecting/attacking intelligence gathering or striking aircraft and sweeping defence/attacking forces. And in a war situation there shouldnt be a dogfight happening. If so thats a huge mistake from both of the sides
I don't recall seeing any F-15 eagles in there but I can certainly afferm your referance to the reluctance of the Swedish government to allow the sale of thier planes to any outside governments or organizations. All I was trying to point out before was that the F/A-18 Hornet should not have been there eather.
Fantastic animation talent.I think I can C what UR trying 2do. Unfortunately in my opinion UR still glorifying killing.Indeed UR making it somewhat sexy.I know D good girl wins but she's still killng along D way. I'm Irish N I undertstand D song fully cos I lived it.Dolores nailed it.Very few people really want 2 kill,so dont be a zombie following orders.Unfortunately ur heroine kills. D only answer is honest politics, where u see the other side! Otherwise it's a case of send in D sexy bombers.XX
@da66661 but its story isnt really that good....it mainly focses on gore for no reason and girls with big boobs which is meant to keep the watchers attention
Spawn, Maxx, Betty Boop, Conan The Adventurer, X Men, Bugs Bunny all have adult content mixed in with the shows, they also have Violence, blood, and death. I hate Kids that talk a hole lot of shit yet know nothing.

Fuck yes we are still watching this.

This is a truly beautifully done music video. It's really thought-provoking on the subject of war. Very well done.
4:12 that part with phantom fly over was perfect! Great fit!

I love Area 88 (both 1984 & 2004 versions)and the song and the video go together well.
Keep up the work RaidenHeaven
Revisiting this classic in the dystopian future world.
wow..
one the best anime at that time
@TheTwinvince

Really amazing vid...Classic Anime, Classic song and the timing...thumbs up big time
@cid76

I found this surprising, and cool. Thumbs up ^____^

Great video. I remember that song.
wow! ur a great soul !
Thank you. I wish I had more things to show ^ ^"

i love this song so much. thx for uploading this amv. you've shown me a cool new anime and song
Great AMV

Cool vid. Though, I think area 88 was done after 1984. Fairly certain the anime was at any rate.
Anime is the best.
Very well done, mate!
Really enjoyed that a lot!
The OVA was darker than the Manga or 2004 series. Granted, the 04 series was more about the characters.
You have to take into account though

Great video! Music fits it well!
Good Anime...
3:40 BOOM HEATSHOOT
@jedispartancoolman - yes, the older version of Area 88 is pretty close to what real air combat is like.
That's what we call 'Portrayal of Reality'
OF COURSE its violent! American cartoons are for children only, but Japanese cartoons are for adults and people who appreciate some seriousness when watching cartoons
the 80s shin looks much better than the one in the new version
People are still watching this thing?
Yes!
Yes.~
sure
I'm still watching it and I dare you too make one with the Bad Wolfs cover!
I remember watching this 4th or 5th grade, awesome that I was able find it again 13 years later!
this is more "gore" tuned then the next generation anime of this is this what air comabt really looks like?.....hmm w/e good amv anyway
welp modern air combat is less likely about knife fighting air, more like gathering intelligence, protecting/attacking intelligence gathering or striking aircraft and sweeping defence/attacking forces. esta cancion me para los pelos esta cabrona y estod animate hace años ke no los veos!!!!!
the ending relay made me sad!
i was wondering, is the anime as good as the kickass game?
I don't recall seeing any F-15 eagles in there but I can certainly afferm your referance to the reluctance of the Swedish government to allow the sale of thier planes to any outside governments or organizations. all those japanesse cartoons have so much violence and killings...
htey have affected me so much since i was watching them
Whereas the manga was just all of the above in one package.
this manga is great, but there are not enough, russian fighters like the mig 25 or 31.
If I was chief at MiG, I wouldn't have built all the aircraft with such dodgy engines
Fantastic animation talent.I think I can C what UR trying 2do. @Scike elfen lied is way more brutal!!!
Spawn, Maxx, Betty Boop, Conan The Adventurer, X Men, Bugs Bunny all have adult content mixed in with the shows, they also have Violence, blood, and death.
