Thanks! I also love that it is now possible to simply check-in and check-out using contactless payments on all Dutch public transport, making it easier (and still the same price) as using the anonymous ov-chipcard.
I got my OV-Chipkaart after a few days I arrived in the Netherlands, a very useful card for public travel throughout the Netherlands. Thanks for the additional info.
you can choose certain subscriptions which either let you travel with no credit and then you get charged at the end of the month or lower the minimum amount you need on the card, usually with some sort of discount and right now i’m pretty sure there’s no need to have €4 on the card for the buses, metro and trams, just as long as you’re not on a negative balance
You can also just buy separate tickets in a bus or at ticket machines for trains or just tap your credit card in the bus or on the train. You don’t need an OV-chipkaart if you are just staying briefly.
PIN was discontinued 10 years ago and replaced with Maestro and Vpay, since MasterCard hast announced to discontinue Maestro, it’s only a matter of time that all Dutch stores will accept MasterCard/Visa debit.
Could you please tell me how to transfer the bus? If you're transferring do you need to check out of the first bus? Or just exit without scanning your card and then scan when you're exiting the second bus?
Good question! You have to scan each time you enter and exit a bus. You get charged for each individual ride, not the whole trip. Hopefully that answers your question.
@@MyProjectWeekend Initial of first name is fine! Personal OV chipkaarts aren't ever checked against an ID, so really you could type in whatever you want. It's more incase it's lost it can be returned to its owner sort of thing!
Hi! Thank York for thi video! I'll visit netherlands next month and i'll buy an anonymous ov card at Amsterdam aereoport. But i heard that at the kiosk is not possibile to use some foreign cards to pay, is it true? Thank you!!
You can use foreign cards at the yellow NS machines at Schiphol Airport and at Amsterdam Centraal stations. You can buy an anonymous OV Chipkaart from these machines.
I've heard that some machines still support cash but not many. I didn't see any that accepted cash when I was there. If you buy a card from a service station from a live person you might be able to use cash there. I hope that helps!
@@MyProjectWeekend So as an American, there will be a lot of machines that I will not be able to use - they won't take my credit card and they won't take cash. Correct? What do you suggest?
@@ui9u9hh you cant add balance on ov chip card in major cities with cash at the public transport company desk ( different in every city) located always in major transport hubs ( a large train station or major bus hub etc) if you are stuck in a small city just ask a local to pin for you and give them cash.
yes and no for trains, the minimum balance is 20 euros so you need to have at least that on your card. This is done because the longest ride inside the Netherlands is a little more than 20 euros. So you're almost always paying for the whole trip if you don't check out and try to gain the system. for trams, buses and metro the minimum balance is 4 euros. same thinking there is almost no trip you can make inside a city that costs more than 4 euros. So with 17 euros on your card ( assuming it's not a personal ov card) you can take the bus, tram and metro but not the train
Hello, nice video, next month I will visit Netherlands and I want to buy Anonymous OV-chipkaart. What is the minimum to add money and can I buy 2 tickets, one for me and one to my girlfriend ?
I am not 100% sure. If you go to the website there is a place where you can apply for a credit refund. I linked to the website in the description of the video. Let me know if you try it and if it works! Thanks!
I have die OV Chipkaart but I think it is a ripp off. They charge every single ride. So it is more expansive when I have to go 2 station by bus and then 2 station by metro, then going just 4 stations by metro. I don't think that is fair. I know no other western country where it works that way. The other unfair thing is, that every ride gets charged. In London for example, when you take more rides at one day, it only charges as long, as the maximum ammount for a day ticket is reached. In the Netherlands it keeps charging, even if you pay much more then for a 24 hour ticket. So I don't see the benefit of this card anymore. So I can buy every single ticket and pay the same. All other major Cities like London, who do such a card make it cheaper to travel with this. But in the netherlands it costs the same or is more expansive.
I'm in Amsterdam now and kinda overwhelmed with their transportation system. This video is a life saver thank you!
Glad it helped! I hope you’re enjoying your trip!

Awesome, you're welcome!
How long did you wait before receiving it ?
Note that you need a minimum of €20 on an Ov Chipkaart to use the trains- you only need €4 on the card to use metros, buses and trams.
so can someone travel with a card with a balance of less than 20 euros? for example can you travel with 10 euros on the card?

Information: the Chipkaart also works on a few train stations in germany , like elten because these are very near to the Netherlands
…I love this and this card works In the entire country !!
It’s a great system! Thanks!

While applying for the personal OV chipkaart, What do you put in Initial? Initial of first name or first name and surname both?
I'm not sure to tell you the truth. Sorry. If anyone else knows please let us know!

Yes that is correct. I wasn’t able to add more to my card at just any kiosk. The only one I had luck with was at the Central Station.

Does it work from amsterdam to almere?
it does work everywere
Does it work to Frankturt?
If you dont spend all that is on your card by the end of your trip, can you get this money back?
