Perfect Strangers was my favorite in the lineup. Larry and Balki were just the perfect pairing, and Jennifer and Mary Ann were very appealing additions.

Two of a kind? On our own? Fresh off the boat? George Lopez? I do not remember these show
Muppets Tonight did what a Muppets show should do.
I also watched melissa Joan hart on Clarrisa explains it all.
I loved Perfect Strangers as a kid

"Two of a kind" was late in the original TGIF lineup when viewership began dropping off in the late 90's around the time when Family Matters and Step by Step was moved to CBS for their last seasons.
I guess only a few episodes of "On our own" was aired on the block before being cancelled
"George Lopez" came in the early 00's when they tried rebooting TGIF
They brought back TGIF for a 3rd time in the late 10's for few months and moved "Fresh off the Boat" from its original time slot.
George Lopez, and Fresh off the Boat are worth watching if you ever run into them and want to try them out. The other 2 feel more dated.

Why Family Matters & Step by Step moved to CBS?
In early 1997, CBS picked up Family Matters and Step by Step in a $40 million deal to acquire the rights to the programs from ABC. ABC then promised to pay Miller-Boyett Productions $1.5 million per episode for a ninth and tenth season of Family Matters. However, tensions had risen between Miller-Boyett Productions and ABC's corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company (which had bought ABC in 1996 as part of its merger with ABC's then-parent Capital Cities/ABC Inc.). Miller-Boyett thought that it would not be a big player on ABC after ABC's recent purchase by Disney.
Miller-Boyett Productions agreed to a $40 million offer from CBS for a 22-episode season for both Family Matters and Step By Step. CBS scheduled Family Matters along with Meego and Step By Step as a part of its new Friday lineup, branded as the CBS Block Party. The network scheduled the family-oriented block against ABC's TGIF lineup, where the two series originated. Jo Marie Payton's contract had just expired and she was reluctant to continue, feeling the show had jumped the shark years prior. She agreed to stay to keep continuity but left midseason shortly after nearly getting into a physical altercation with White in what would be her last regular episode; in that episode, White (playing a gangster instead of his usual Urkel) was attempting to insert material that violated Broadcast Standards and Practices. The resulting dispute between White and Payton escalated to the point where Darius McCrary had to separate the two. Payton would appear in only one more episode after that-a Christmas episode that also brought back several former characters from the ABC run who had been written out on CBS-before Judyann Elder took over as Harriette for the remainder of the season.
While Family Matters continued to lose viewership compared to previous years, it was initially a modest success on CBS, beating the show that replaced it, You Wish. Meego, however, was a ratings failure and was canceled after six weeks. After the holiday special season, CBS replaced Meego with Kids Say the Darndest Things, and with that show's child-centered focus, it was placed in Family Matters' 8/7c time slot. Family Matters was pushed an hour later and paired with Step by Step. The ratings for Family Matters fell even further in this later slot, and the entire block except for Kids Say the Darndest Things was canceled in spring 1998, with the remaining episodes burned off in the summer.

I believe “On Our Own” originally ran on Sundays, but was re-tooled and brought back on TGIF.
In the first run, Josh would dress in drag as a distant aunt to trick the social workers. When it was brought back for TGIF, he got full custody of his siblings and no longer donned his alter ego (my favorite part of that show).
I liked the show originally but only watched it once or twice after its Friday revival-and it probably only aired a handful of episodes since then.

Ok thanks for the info, that's probably why I don't remember seeing it on TGIF. I remember catching it on TVOne in the mid 2000's where I watched several episodes of it before they took it off their schedule.

The 90s was the real TGIF height. I loved Family matters more than these other shows. It was never about the black representation that made me watch the show, it was the stories and funny characters.

Really love Sabrina the teenage witch plus the animated series that follows. Sabrina the animated series and Secret life. Nick still voiced Salem and Emily Hart voiced Sabrina. There was an early Sabrina animated series that follows the comics more accurate and a new Sabrina series with a more horror element to it.

ABC's TGIF block (1989-2000) began to die in the fall of 1997: stemming from a combination of aging sitcoms like Family Matters and Step by Step moving to CBS (who started - and ended - their own family-friendly Friday night sitcom line-up in 1997-98 called "CBS Friday Night Block Party"), the over saturation of supernatural/magic type shows (Sabrina the Teenage Witch and new series You Wish and Teen Angel, the latter two both lasted only one season), the failure of Two of a Kind (which was the last sitcom produced by the previously reliable Miller-Boyett group) starring the Olsen twins the following year (1998-99). Ultimately, the ending of Boy Meets World after seven seasons and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch moving to The WB after the 1999-2000 season.
ABC would bring back the TGIF brand for the 2003-05 & 2018-19 seasons, but it never met the same success it had before.

I’d have to look through all of the shows myself and make a definitive Top 15 myself, but your list is very good. I’m happy to see Fresh Off the Boat and George Lopez made the cut, those are two I really liked. FOTB started off as a Tuesday show, I liked the TGIF alumni meeting new TGIF stars commercials but other than that I don’t think ABC was going all in on the revival. Child Support didn’t fit the block, they should have just found 2 more sitcoms to add then it could have been a true TGIF.
On Our Own of what I remember started as a Sunday night show then finished its run on TGIF. I remember catching it once or twice in TGIF, I actually enjoyed but it was gone when I was ready to tune in again.

Your list isn't bad. However, Full House at #7 is a crime. Family Matters is #1. Full House, Step by Step, Boy Meets World, & Hangin w/Mr Cooper & Sabrina( 5th place tie) is your tops. Longevity in the lineup needs to count for more. These shows were the staples & anchors for this whole programming block.

    • @2010theunit
      @2010theunit 6 дней назад

I also wanted to add this for those who feel I ranked Mr. Cooper too high. It was the show that stabilized the 9:30pm slot. They're were many 1 season shows that never found their footing there even pre TGIF. Cooper had 4 solid years. By far, the most successful run in that timeslot.
