@movienerd202 they are still edible dehydrated meat mixed with a bit of it's tallow which is the oily substance when you cook fat can hold up for 50+ years it's called pemmican and it was used as a survival food mainly during our nomadic times

This is just Pemmican that is vacuum sealed. Pemmican has a shelf life of 25 years uncovered, who knows how many years vacuum sealed. It's essentially beef jerky dried until it's brittle, and then coated in beef tallow. Native Americans had been using it for thousands of years because it keeps for a long time and is high in calories, especially in the winter when food is scarce.

That stuff is called pemican. It really can last 50 years. Frontiersmen and colonials used to make this stuff all the time it was a protein and Calorie bar. I know how to make this stuff I usually use blueberries beef jerky and rendered fat. This along with hardtack helped people survive during times of famine. There are fallout shelters all over the place none of them are even remotely like you see on the video game called fallout. There are no giant gears all they are is concrete structures lined with water steel and or lead.

@@208flatheads3 It's actually probably perfectly fine- it's basically jerky (compare to a Slim Jim) that was sealed in a foil-type packet and then sealed *again* in a metal can, which didn't seem compromised in any way. It's not even slightly suspect.

I was stationed in Japan in the early 50s and because we operated a radar sight which was off base we were entitled to rations. The rations were from WWII ,and believe it or not the over whelming favorite was sphagetti . I liked too and I,m Italian !

When I see these videos I only remember in 2013 watching this NatGeo program called preparers, who had tons of canned food and seeds, water, etc. I just imagine How much of that food has been wasted or rotted to date?

@@thomgizziz Yes it is. It's a dry good (basically jerky) that's been sealed in a foil packet and then sealed again in a metal can. The can obviously wasn't compromised before being open (e.g. rust or puncture), so it's not even slightly suspect.

*Directions for use*
(1) eat as a bar.
(2) BROWNED MEAT - cover crumbled bar with water and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Brown over a low flame while stirring.
(3) GRUEL OR SOUP - Add water to crumbled bar to desired thickness. Heat, with occasional stirring, for 10 minutes.
I know this is a survival ration from the latter 60's, but let's think about how horrifying these survival rations are. Meat bar seems interesting, but am I the only one who wants to see it cooked 😂

Fun fact: The “MëtBar” was actually produced and sold to the public way back in 1920-1940’s in rural Germany, Poland and other European military locations in WW2. They were discontinued because they found traces of human flesh in it. I just made this all up but i think its true.

I love how that it came with three different forms of preparation on it. Eat as bar, brown it or turn it into soup. Basically you hurt your jaw eating It as a bar, decide to brown the next bar cause it might be easier to eat and after making two mistakes you finally make it as a soup.
It was made dehydrated, so it must be hydrated in soup, broth, or even hot water. I believe this is where “ shit on a shingle” began.
Shit on a shingle began way back in the Great Depression, at least. (I only know this because I was raised by a grandmother who lived through it.)

Every time I watch these videos I have a doubt... the food that appears canned, sealed, preserved, etc. is it really from many years ago or does it only appear to look that way, I mean, do they come packaged with that theme?
Some people make reproductions, but if it's been kept well it really can be suprising how well it looks. Best to compare the stuff with reliable sources
