I never liked Old-Timey songs before. Until I discovered these guys. They turned me on to a genre of music I always ignored, and now I listen to their songs all the time, and even ended up become something of a Civil War buff. Stumbling upon one song can literally change your life. These guys are the best.
Actually that's a flageolet, a sort of 19th century version of a pennywhistle (it's end-blown, whereas a fife is blown from the side like a regular flute (I play fife as well as stroke style and clawhammer banjo) A fact that tends to get glossed over a lot is that many "fifers" of the Civil War and much of the rest of the 19th century actually played flageolets (pennywhistles), but were still called "fifers" because that was what the person in that capacity was customarily called.
