They SPRAY PAINTED an 80's STUMPJUMPER! 😡🤬 But the parts are cool, so I'm gonna harvest them! ASMR

- I'm getting over COVID and feel about as good as this one looks! I don't feel like talking much, but I needed to do something with my hands. I've been tripping over this project for a week. I need to get the shifters and crank and maybe some other bits for a framebuilding project I have in mind, so, sit back and relax to the tunes as I take this one apart.
Check out the other videos all sorts of bicycle repair as we refurbish and restore used bicycles or tune up customer bikes from all major brands including (but not limited to) Trek, Fuji, Specialized, Giant, Raleigh, Mongoose, GT, Schwinn, Rivendell, Waterford, Cervelo, Felt, Kona, Cannondale, Bianchi, Marin, Canyon, Scott, Salsa, Surly, All-City, etc. We will fix skipping gears, noisy chains, flat tires, presta valves, bent rims, numbness in hands, sticky shifters, squeaky brakes, uncomfortable saddles, upright handlebars by adjusting derailleurs, brake adjustments, new cables, new chain and cassette, freewheels, shifter overhauls, changing brake pads, lubrication, adjusting hubs, headsets and bottom bracket replacements, etc. or even just the easy way to tuneup your road, hybrid, mountain, MTB, ATB gravel, comfort or ebike bicycle! Heck you might even see some randonneur bikes for randonneuring or bike packing or touring or camping or single track or rail to trail or bike path style tours with urban cycling mixed in!
What a peaceful video. I love watching you effortlessly disasemble things I remember struggling with as a kid. Hope you get to 100% as quick as possible.
I didn't realise that this was the video I absolutely needed for a dark and dreary Sunday night here in the UK... 🍂👍🏻🚲
Yup,same. I'm in Ontario Canada. Great RUclips channel !
It's very dark and dreary here in Brighton in the UK, but this video was indeed the just the tonic!
LOVE this! I told a customer a couple of months ago that I wanted to build an older bike, although I think you building an old Suntour bike will be incredible! I'll look forward to watching this!
I absolutely love your videos. You showed me just how fun it is to tinker with these simple machines. I picked up a rock hopper 29 not too long ago to enjoy the local trails in Tennessee. You're the Bob Ross of bicycles my man! Its great to see a skilled guy bring all types of perfectly good bikes back to life rather than insisting people buy the latest and greatest piece of carbon fiber like most of the bike channels on RUclips.
yep, loved those old suntour wrachet shifters!
Brings back memories!
Can’t believe the grips look so good
Like Bugs Bunny says, "She may not be pretty now, but she was somebody's baby once." Only the second time I've seen a bike with an 'adjustable' cup & lock ring on the drive-side. The COOF is no joke--healing vibes, my friend!
You have to bring back that 1980s bike! I'd love to see that frame stripped down and repainted. I think it could be a lovely bike. I'm watching from here in the UK actually, winter is very much here now on the south coast of England where I am so watching old bikes being revived is very pleasurable.
I had a 1984 (I believe) Stumpjumper Sport with Sugino AT cranks, Mafac brakes, bull moose handlebars, Suntour derailleurs and the really cool biplane fork. Specialized switched to the unicrown fork soon afterward, so your bike is likely from that era. Bummer that the rear derailleur tab was broken off. Maybe it’s a sign that this bike needs to be a single speed. I have had about seven bikes powder coated at a local shop in the past decade. Initially they charged $95, but the price has nearly doubled because of inflation. Even at that price it’s worth it to me. My past rattle-can efforts pretty much sucked, and stripping a bike frame is a lot of work. Thanks for your videos. I had dreamed of making supplemental income from bike flipping, although on a much smaller scale. I usually buy a junker, fix it it up, ride the hell out of it for a few years and send it down the road, sometimes at a profit.
I have a stumpy that was powdercoated today. Love those bikes. I had an 80s Trek 500 powdered Kennmore refrigerator white (with the fridge texture) back in college.
Yes I agree. Two media blast and powdercoat frames for me so far. the only way to go for sure.
feel better dude! your content is great! I love all the midwest/northwoods phrases and colloquialisms!
No you. Don't.
I LOVE THESE VIDEOS!! Thank you for making my day bearable behind this computer.
Strip the paint, give it a proper paint job and rebuild as a gravel monster. Would love to see that video!
Just the opposite! Hoping to drop this afternoon!
@@bkefrmr I hope "drop" doesn't mean "dump". There are still people who would want this frame and rebuild it.
I'm a bit far out (Germany), otherwise I would take it!
Cheers from Chicagoland. Fellow bike project junkie. Thanks for the video and I hope you feel better soon.
Hope you feel better soon
Great ATB history in the parts.Look forward to the new build.
I like your style! You might even be related to "The Dude" . How about a video tour of your shop?
That frame is a work of art. I'd clean it and then preserve it beneath clearcoat varnish.
I actually thought about this when I was doing the edit. It really has a great "patina". It would make a great single speed bomber bike...hmmm...why not!
Hey it's a lugged frame, better than this modern ugly lumpy welded rubbish. Folk restore frames in much worse condition than that although I readily admit it's a lot of work.
^^ Single speed rat bike fer sure!
I love to see you strip down that frame and repaint it chrome it or just clear coat it.
It's sometimes not worth saving everything but I'm amazed how much you saved.
There was a junk collection in my area, I found myself looking at bikes, most were meh, a couple were low end bike store stuff. I passed on them but they disappeared quick, I didn't expect that, the derailer was Shimano but mostly plastic.
Nice work, shinning like new. Love old bikes.
I had a 1979 Schwinn Sidewinder micro-flake brown with chrome forks, I found in my uncle's bike shop, I think it was 15-speed, it had the shift levers on the frame instead of handlebars like the vintage road bikes it had a seat with coil springs in it. I had it for a year before someone stole it. I got a Specialized mountain bike but I didn't want to fix it and started riding a Gary Fisher instead. I like riding the antique the best for coolness.
Relaxing and meditative watching and napping after pumpkin pie piece.
I have those same shifters on my apollo leopard 26 also an 80s beast that I love to ride
I like how you changed this video style from your other's. Ride Safe everybody ! Bikebag/bikecamping vids would be cool....
too bad we don't live closer. I could sandblast and powdercoat that frame for a followup video. I see a lot of vintage bike frames come through in the early spring, a lot of builds are for the fixie/single/track type conversion. One time it was kinda funny because i powdered a road frame during the week then i walk into a local bike shop on the weekend to buy something and that very frame is in the stand getting put together.
Get well soon and completely!🙏✌️
I want that frame and fork, they're beautiful
Gotta rescue my Suntour shifters from the rain!
I've never seen a drive-side cup that used the pin spanner versus and outside the ring tool. The way those can get stuck with the reverse threads, I bet it would be easy to shear off your pin spanner!
Those power ratchet shifters are the cats ass, man. I’d like to have one of those just to fidget with while I’m sitting around the house.
So satisfying
Hey, you use Simple Green in your ultrasonic, too! I don't feel like so much of a luddite anymore for using the same stuff.
Wow nice frame bro. For some it trash but for the bike lover it's a treasure... Hope I have that one ..
Looks like steel.. Strip and blue it🍻
Enjoy your videos. I much prefer dialogue over silence/music. Thank you.
Using a nail-set as a punch. Just like a carpenter.
def would love to see that frame cleaned up!
Love your videos and I pray you’ll get well soon.
Hope you feel better soon!
IMHO there have been no real advancements in shifters since the Suntour ratchets. Thumbies rock and these are the best thumbies . True Temper flat bars, too cool! Glad you're on the mend.
those forks definitely are not what are on my 84 Stumpie, nor is that stem/handlebar. brakes are different on mine (Deore cantis), the Sugino AT crankset looks right, the rear wheel hub doesn't look like the Specialized hub on mine (which was symmetric, with a 5 speed freewheel, so the spokes on the left and right matched, one of the strongest rear wheels I've ever had). Mine has a Specialized loose ball bottom bracket, not a Suntour cartridge insert like that.. same suntour shifters but diacompe brake levers. my rear derailleur was a Suntour Mountech (sadly long ago worn out), and I'm pretty sure it was mounted on a braze-on, not a separate derailleur mounting plate. I believe those early Specialized bike frames were made by Miyata
Looks like that frame provided years of dedicated service to someone. Top tube looks pretty hammered though.
Should be possible to identify the frame by the serial number. If it is an old specialized it’s worth it to strip and repaint it.
Get well soon! Very interesting!
Beautiful video man hope you kick Covid’s butt fast.
I recently farmed an 80's the raleigh for a sakae mts-101 that had similar vibes and a wicked lugged fork.. but too much damage and repaired areas.. also killed the threads on the drive side... wanted the crank
Good luck with the Covid. Hope you get over it soon. You have peaked my interest in a Rivendale touring bike. If you have any information where I might find one, please let me know.
I’ve never heard of a Rivendale
Rivendell all rounder
You should be able to check the serial number to see the frame year. I just restored an '85 Stumpy sport that was spray painted and rusty.
Fking loved it.
Suntour gave us the slant parallelogram.
I collect derailleurs.
1986 was a game changer.
Up untill then the patent hadn't run out, shimano and campagnolo were waiting.
Love your vids bikefarmer from Wisconsin.
I'm not from Wisconsin. I worded it wrong. 😮
Covidentially... cool video.
Thanks.
Comment on your de-rusting microwave sometime. What snake oil you use and cook time in the crockpot.
That may not be a stumpjumper. There's usually an S in the rear drop outs up near the seat clamp on the ones in the late 80s. Try to lightly get the spay paint off and see if any original decals show thru. Specialized sold parts before bikes so it's not uncommon to see a Specialized headset on a different brand bike. Love your work! Keep going!!
That bike needs to quarantine
Hey, that looks like my 80s diamondback paint job!
I got the idea from Sheldon Brown, if that makes a difference
Nice bicycle.
So, enjoy learning while watching your best-filmed videos!
Great video. It must take a lot of time to set up each shot and then edit the results. I really like the ultra close ups.
Great job sir💯👌
I'm working on a 1998 Trek 8000 SL. I need new chain rings. Should I just buy the crank arm set or just the 3 rings? I would need to purchase the socket with teeth to remove the 42 tooth ring.
those thumbies are worth more than the rest of the bike, lol
Maybe a Skunk Junker Sport? I had a Skunk Junker Pro and I don't remember the rear derailleur having a attached hanger like this bike. Nice lugged frame.
It’s a sport if it’s a stump
Love the videos... Do you ever use a tumbler to clean up any of those parts??
Very considerate of you to translate the waste receptacle for all the employees and patrons from other regions of the country. ;)
What did you use to get the rust off of the nooks and crannies of all those small parts? The sonic cleaner only removes dirt and grime right?
Just some rust remover gunk and some elbow grease
Who knows what you have there. It was a nice quality frame of one make or another at one point. Maybe the derailer hanger had broken off? (All the old Stump Jumpers had integrated hangers.) The fork was replaced. Nice shifters though!
So many cool parts. I think we’re the same age and have been doing this the same amount of time; I’ve got most of those in my collection too!
I’m not sure if it’s a stumpjumper, but I’d love to know what it is!! It’s the lugs mostly. My memory made me do a quick search and at least the first ones in pictures were tig welded. I wonder if it’s an early Ross(the rack mounts and the dropouts make me think this)? Maybe Bridgestone(because lugs, lol)? Maybe you can do some somewhat gentle paint removal and uncover some original decals, might be a cool video.
I’ve really been enjoying your channel, reminds me of all the bikes I used to work on, simpler times…thanks bike farmer! Hope you feel better soon.
I'm thinking 1984 Stumpjumper Sport based on a few googles. Nothing of any real value anyway. But enough to make an easy video and inspire some clicks!
@@bkefrmrdude! I learned about lugged stumpjumpers today! Thank you.
@@bkefrmrdude! I learned about lugged stumpjumpers today! Thank you.
That turned out to be quite cathartic to watch. What was the lock wrench/pliers you were using? I have not seen those before. Good luck with the new channel. Thanks and feel better!
Hozan
Strip the paint and redo it with some nice automotive paint. Stumpjumper frames are great.
Those pedals are worth some coin.
Found your channel a few months ago and really enjoy the content! My wife and I are moving to WI in 2 days if you can believe it and I look forward to riding in your neck of the woods. The wife has family in Baraboo, so I know we'll be out that way. Thats all assuming our drive from Montana goes well this weekend... Moving 7 bikes is a normal thing to do, right? Right?!
That is awesome! The Baraboo Hills are no joke! Best road cycling in the world!
@@bkefrmr Thanks for the reply and your videos! Feel better and we hope to see you at one of the Minnesota Randonneur rides someday, we'll be out that way and your videos made me aware of the group. Appreciate ya', have a good one!
Hey Bike Farmer. Love your content. Seems like you are sending a lot of good metal scrap to the landfill. Have you looked into selling your scrap?
I send mine to metal recyclers as some local bicycle charities do .
Selling your crap?
Could be a Corona 89 bike from.... Chinah!
Where I come from… a bike that’s been spray painted that haphazardly I would suspect to have been stolen at some point in it’s life.
I thought that all bikes get stolen at some point in their life. They do in my town!
very interesting
What is the tool you used to remove the lock-ring on the bottom bracket? My sanity and nuckles wanted me to ask. 😂
Please list the adjustable wrench you used to loosen the bottom bracket. Not the park tool adjustable green one.
Hozan
Thanks!
THANK YOU!
Hi, What solution do you use in your ultra sonic cleaner?
According to Park Tool one of the (joke) symptoms of COVID was the sudden desire to pull your cranks. Apparently this came out of them having 20,000 backordered crankpullers during COVID lockdown. Ahhh well, it made me laugh. I hope you feel better and your urge to pull cranks subsides.
Edited some nice dramatic slo-mo scenes ;) well done. Get well soon!
The problem with old bikes, sand blast the surface, add new paint, add new groupset, add new wheels then you don't want to ride the shiny bike.
Ope, dropped a comment
You win! 🥇
What kind of pliers are you using on the bottom bracket?
Hozan
Suntour is the best
What is the tool you were using to remove the BB rings? I want it!
Always amazes me how shiny the old parts come out of the ultrasonic cleaner. Which cleaners did you use? Get well soon!
Looks like a splash of Zep orange and a whole lot of Simple Green.
Anything that works but is not flammable .
I run those exact Suntour shifters on my 97 Trek 830. Chromoly bikes are king.
Polished aluminum is superior to black anodized. New bikes suck.
Agreed. I like the look so much I’ve replaced basically everything on my Trek. Even on a modern frame that polished aluminum just looks killer.
Remove cables, do not cut them, you may have a good cable which only needs oil. Hoping you feel better soon
lol, these are probably the first cables I’ve cut in a RUclips video. All
My others get comments that I should replace cables because they’re cheap. Good thing I LOVE being told what to do!
Hi
Are those MKS graphite pedals?
Yes they are! Grafight! 9/16”
Just how many washers is he gonna drop?
Is BKEFRMR short for Bike Faramir? I loved you in Lord of the Rings!
Where you gloves😮
What is the gel cleaner that you use for the shifters?
Rustoleum something or nother
🚲🚲
Ah, Suntour.
Hello= Please do NOT strip it just wash it with your dawn and clear coat it it spent it's whole life to look that good =Bye ps. Stop throwing good stuff in the trash
Hello= please stop telling people what to do nobody likes it =Bye ps. Stop bastardizing language which whatever you call this
Can you please make some videos where I don't think your wedding ring mean you married another man?
Sure thing! But I have no idea why my wedding ring would mean I'm married to another man. And I've never given you my pronouns, so shame on you for putting me in box, ma'am!
@@bkefrmr I had to be your first troll. Good luck with the channel. I'll stop now.
