I am Maltese and remember my late Grandfather tell us the story of this event. He was one of many Maltese people who were enrolled by the British in the Royal Navy....he saw death many times and suffered a lot during WW2. Our generation neither know what war is nor have seen such suffering....it is a lesson that we should learn and never ever want this to happen again. Blessed be the people who suffered during this war and for their future generations, may the lord give them eternal peace in heaven and help us not to live such abysmal times.
Masterfully put. Nothing to add to that.
Amen, brother. I pray that your own grandchildren may never forget likewise (should The Lord tarry).
I was with my wife in the war rooms and we watched this on a tour, every school should be shown this video,it is about the courage of the people of Malta,RAF,Convoys,God bless you all.
God Bless the Maltese.
Forever in our memories. Are those brave men who gave their lives to save Malta from the enemy. Always in our prayers.
As an Englishman, I honour Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. of America who built the Ohio. That lady was superb, I'm awfully sorry she got so bashed about and had to be scuttled, her back was broken, but she saved the day along with the others.
Operation Pedestal, getting those vital supplies to Malta was the nail in the coffin for the Axis.
They knew that if the '' Ohio '' got through, they were finished, it did, and they were.
Although many Navy & Merchant ships were lost with many casualties, I believe this was their
finest hour, which makes me so proud to be British.
I don't think many people could imagine the bravery of those men. I certainly can't.
The whole story of Malta during WW2 is an unbelievable one. From the suffering and survival of its people, to this epic convoy that helped so much to make that survival possible. A great documentary that deserves far more viewings.
Thank you Eddie Smith for your courage in what had to be a total nightmare getting to the Grand Harbor. Your courage helped to save my mother who was only 17 at the time the Ohio was escorted into the Grand Harbor. thank you.
Eric Pinks , My father was a boy when you grandfather sail into Malta Harbour, I thank Mr Eddie Smith for his bravey ,May he rest in peace.i am proud of all the people that helped that small island ,
things would have been differant if they didn,t ,
My granddad Eddie Smith was on the Ohio and he is in the documentary. It seems very strange seeing him on TV in his strong Yorkshire accent, especially as he passed away a few years ago. It should be made into a film to celebrate all those brave soles that gave their lives and for those that survived.
Respects to your granddads memory R I P.
I read the book Malta Convoy by Peter Shackland as a kid. Since then I have tried to maintain the standards of those men.
I also think that the story could be a great movie as long as its historically correct with no unnecessary padding.
It was so intense I doubt any padding could find a place ;)
My sincerest respects to your Grandfather. I totally agree that a film should be made to recognise the bravery of these marvellous brave men who did us so proud. God bless Eddie and all who sailed with him.
God bless every one of them. They have my respect and admiration.
In 1977 I met a fellow Englishmen in North Bay, Ontario who had served on HMS Nigeria during Pedestal. His name was Bailey and so he was called Bill. He told me about being torpedoed amongst other stories and I asked him was he scared and he replied " Naaar, I was 19, we had a prayer...please god, get me to port so I can have one last leg over before I die.
What brave people of Malta who stood firm and the dedicated seamen and servicemen who defied the Axis attacks to bring the supplies through. We remember you god bless you all.
Malta's George Cross was hard-earned and very well deserved.
I read the book Malta Convoy by Peter Shackland as a kid. I've always tried to live up to the standards of those men.
Me too, and like you, it had a profound influence on me.
yep ...cant see a photo of Ohio coming into port without a tear coming into my eye ...THIS is where history happens ..these are the people who make history ...not just the men of the convoy but more ... the people of Matlta GC
Thank you too the Merchant navy the Royal Navy and all who gave everything without asking and for the people of Malta …..I’m a merchant seaman and want to Thank you ………
Wonderful.
God bless the RN, MN and the people of Malta.
After this Event the Maltese people were given the George Cross for such bravery and gallantry....it was on 15th of April 1942.....We endured a lot of suffering and lost many people due to the Stuka bombers. We were the most country bombed in the world per square mile and never lost heart. We must be thankful to the British soldiers and Grandfathers who served heroically although they were outnumbered, outgunned and most of all, low in fuel and ammunition.....
This will be a great movie for Mell Gibson and Russell Crow to make ,these documentaries must been shown to children at school so they know how hard it was it was for getting our freedom God Bless these men
Very moving documentary. Very well put together and all the more effective for the understated way in which so many brave men tell their story. My father was on HMS Victorious, one of the three aircraft carriers that escorted the convoy. It was the only one that survived more or less intact. HMS Eagle was sunk and the other carrier was so badly damaged it was sent to the USA for repairs which were barely completed by the end of the war. Its planes landed on the Victorious and were then pushed over board as there was no room for them. HMS Victorious had a direct hit on its flight deck but luckily the bomb failed to explode.
You may have been afraid, but you were all truly brave, and I thank you
True courage is being afraid but doing it anyway. Just like the Maltese did throughout the siege!
The merchant seamen are the unsung heroes of WW III; not glamorous, perhaps, but they saved the day.
JP VOGEL I didn’t know about world war threee
As for the Americans, merchant seaman had more fatalities per capita, than the American Army, Army Air Corps, Navy, Marine, or Coast Guard.
@devontodetroit No. Merchant seamen were not conscripts. They were not part of the military but did interact with them to work out the logistics and security of convoys.
In the United States, because their work was critical, they weren't subject to the draft in World War II.
Once a ship was sunk and the merchant seamen went into the lifeboats, their pay stopped that day - how hard was that for them to take.
@@2394Joseph true. When I was 20, I met an American who had served in the merchant marine in WW II and had been sunk 3 times in the Atlantic. He was poorly educated, but he was a true hero after my heart.
This is beautiful. Anyone who likes this, and also likes older movies. should watch the original black and white movie about malta (as in hollywood movie), showing the malta story, during ww2...there are also documentaries about the townspeople. - Beautiful...this shows immense courage in the face of adversity!
Makes me so emotional to see what my country had to go through during ww2 and it wasn't even our fault!! Thank God for the convoy , otherwise Malta would have never survived!!
My Dad ended the war on Malta. He always had very fond memories of the Maltese people. Took him a very long time, but he got back there before he passed away. Malta, was awarded the George Cross for their courage and fortitude, well deserved in my opinion. I don't think they'd have surrendered. Not the Maltese!
Thank you Percy, I really appreciate your comments. I am Maltese was born there and raised in Australia and I am very grateful for what the brave soldiers did for my country and the tenacity of my people, its true what you said the Maltese arent known to quit.
No the Maltese never surrendered, they were one week away from extinction, but she made it. Maltese are known to be tenacious and not quitters.
@Rita Zammit: The deprivation the Maltese suffered was horrendous! "Malta Dog" as it was known took away so many in such a unpleasant ways and yet the people remain generous lovely souls.
@Les Morley: Well said sir! Mind I think a couple of other folk helped too.
Any holder of the Most Highly Derogatory Order of the Irremovable Finger AND Bars is a MAN among Men... I am amazed Mr Prune (if I be so forward) that you haven't been knighted or very least made Air Chief Marshall. My Father took my mother to Valletta a few years before he passed. Had 3 ships sunk under him in the convoys to save Malta, and was first officer on "Pedestal but his version of events it delayed his getting own ship till 1943 cause he every time they sent him to Malta he had to find his own way back to Alexandria or Gibraltar...
Respect...
A great film and a truly Great achievement by the Royal and Merchant Navies and the convoy what was left of it to get through to Malta the Victoria Cross Island, one should not forget that too
Sorry,, it was the George Cross not the Victoria Cross that was awarded to Malta during World War Two
Excellent documentary-thanks for posting!
I remember my father , RMA gunner during the war, telling me of a workman unloading food from convoy ship, stealing a can of corned beef, getting caught and shot for doing that.
That’s rough... be in perspective.. that man was stealing straight from starving children.
Read the autobiography "Destroyer Captain" of Lt Cmd Roger Hill DSO DSC. It is one of the 4 outstanding reads of the war at sea during WWII (the other 3 being "Unbroken" - Alistair Mars, "U-Boat Killer - Doald MacIntyre, and "One of our submarines" - Edward Yound). Roger Hill was captain of the destroyer HMS Ledbury who along with the destroyers HMS Penn, Braham and the minesweeper HMS Rye, found the stricken Ohio. For 2 days, they protected the Ohio from constant air and sea attack to safely deliver her in to Malta Harbour.
Loved every bit , great,thanks
Why is it that this story is not better known? It's one of the most crucial stories of WW2 and still very few people know of these men's bravery and sacrifice. Why has no one made a feature film of this? I wonder if Mr. Speilberg knows this story?
The British naval actions in the Mediterranean Sea were excellent.
I sailed on the M.V. Port Chalmers in 1956 some time after the war, she run the Malta convoy and survived alongside the Ohio, and two others.
Brilliant documentary.. wonder how the people of today would fare.
The first word of attack and they'd scamper home, assuming they had the nerve to leave harbour in the first place
Snowflakes ❄️
My father Capt Tom Symons decd. served in 'Pedestal' ... in fact made three convoys to Malta... best story I heard was of the only plane he ever shot down as Gunnery officer before he got his Masters Ticket was of shooting down an Itie torpedo bomber... to which he swore was flying backwards and that was only reason his gun Hit it.. as he swore his crew and he were incompetent. But he got a gong for it and the crew mentioned in dispatches, but his version was, it was the Itie pilots fault for flying backwards.
God bless the heroes of the british navy
Brave men , would make an excellent film
Jesus, they so need to make a movie about this. FFS, epic.
They did.
I am not going to be as helpful as I would want here - sorry. San Demetrio London is about Convoy HX84 from NS, Canada to the UK and primarily about the trials of the tanker MV San Demetrio and her crew. HX84 was the convoy action where the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Jervis Bay (7x6"/2x3" unarmoured) engaged the pocket battle ship Admiral Scheer and was sunk is mentioned in the film. The subsequent action where the SS Beaverford (1x3"/1x4" unarmoured) engaged the Admiral Scheer (6x11"/8x5.9" armoured) for almost 5 hours before being lost with all souls was not mentioned. Regarding the film of the Malta convoy. I thought Pedestal was a significant part of the Malta Story but reading Wiki I am now not sure and I cannot seem to access the whole film on RUclips to check. However, I am sure there is a film as I remember the bit where they sound the Alert as Ohio makes Grand Harbour.
Well done to
Tudorhead,
great
share!
this would make for a box office killer if ridly scott and nolan would have a go at it
jawadad802 it would but people not knowing the history of pedestal would probably think that the damage done to the ohio and not sunk would be too far fetched.
Sad but true, it was a magnificent achievement and a truly well built ship
''The Gallant Tanker'' Period
At 1:21 you can see that a depth charge is being used against a cargo ship . I think this ship must be Japanese because using depth charges set to go off on their most shallow settings was used to great effect in the pacific . This one looks like the “K” rack ship launched variety . Many ships and barges were sunk by depth charges dropped from aircraft, videos often show the ships are attacked from the back at mast height dropping the depth charge just as they clear the ship right in front of it so the ship sails right over the explosion taking advantage of the mining effect and breaking the ships keel therefore sinking it . I only mention this because it is not widely known that ships were destroyed in this manner !
This is Operation Pedestal.
Mention the name in the title.
there I was thinking this is Spinal tap @@dudeonyoutube
Bravi lis- suldati li salvaw lil- Malta!! And even if they conquered us they would last long just let them take away our pastizzi
There was mention of Convoy PQ-17. David Irving wrote a book about it. I wonder if there was an accurate movie made about this disaster on the Murmansk run.
See Jeremy Clarkson's documentary.
He said accurate.
@@51WCDodge Clarkson's documentary is VERY accurate. As is his work on the St Nazaire raid, Victoria Crosses and Isambard Brunel.
The germans hit my right speaker
The great Maltese people were the best allies Britain ever had. And their wish to become an equal and integral overseas part of the United Kingdom under Dom Mintoff should have been welcomed with open arms. But wretched traitors in British government rejected Malta, which is now in the corrupt clutches of EU and the mafias of Sicily and Russia. While Britain has opted for islamification.
At 22.12 where did that Westland Lysander come from? I'm pretty sure the Axis didnt use any captured ones in the Med!!
41:55 ... I hate that. I fkn hate that someone at that point in time I don't know and can't reach is in that much unprovoked pain. Political rhetoric aside . If they should have been there or not and the moral prowess and choices the admiralty and govt made all to the side for a second... It's horrible. Knowing that a boy left and that day he was shoved violently into the manhood that would facilitate the nightmares and agony of daydreams he carried from when he died inside as a boy and was reborn with the scars of war already weighing him down ... And he carried it his whole life. And that moment he slipped. Just about dropped it... But he didn't ... He waved it away as he started to succumb to emotional bombardment that arguably we all would not shun him for if he did lose it all the way every damn day forward. I feel so fkn helpless. And im mad at my fkn gen and my tiers of service because we bs and whine never reflecting on what happened to the shoulders we stand on. Im a 6'4 240lbs athletic build and I've never wanted to wrap my arms around a complete stranger so bad in my life. I'm sorry. I'm sorry we didn't evolve. I'm sorry we didn't try harder. I'm sorry I am what you got for your troubles. I wish I could trade for whoever it is that left that whole. I know it sounds cheap or hollow but I swear I'm a nobody I'm dying from renal k failure no freinds no fam ...I try to just stay home because I camt be a POS if I don't go into society right ? I fkn can't stand the fact that people give US free meals. They give US respect and admiration. .. "thank you for your service"... No. Thank THEM for their service. Anything after Korea is pussyfooting compared to what these men did. I am so sorry sir. I hope that you can forgive us. I'm so glad you are not only sharing but bravely showcasing the war demons that plague you and so many others.
Love from a nameless lowife POS USELESS hairless ape who ain't so mighty
This seems to be an interesting, well-made documentary. Unfortunately, the recording levels are so low that I can't hear a word anyone says! I wish this could be fixed.
low audio; it's a strain to hear

Did HMS Argus go to Malta?
Yes but Roosevelt forgot to say Britain would have pay for them. The q ships were rubbish they would break in two. Don't know why but Malta returned the George cross and dropped it from it's title to plain Malta instead of Malta GC
The George Cross has not been returned , it is still on public display .
Please dont say rubbish....... we still carry the George Cross in our Flag
And thank us you are not speaking german today
May be Malta dropped it. But I still use it.
the answer if we Maltese droped the George cross or not comes out to you if you just look at our flag so think twice before you say any nonsence
It was Russia and England only fighting the Germans but USA entered because Japan hit Pearl Harbour thanks God for the mistake Japan did but sad for the lives lost God Bless them
If the USA had not supplied England and Russia, through the Lend/Lease program, the War would've been lost, before the USA ever entered it. ...Remember that, next time you think about bashing the USA, when it comes to World War II!
Audio fail. 😔
Can anyone understand a thing Eddie Smith says?
Raurke Goose yes very easily he is speaking English
No sound after 20 minutes
Almost no sound from the beginning now.
Buckeye ship! Beat them nazis' like the Buckeyes beat xichigan every damn year!
funny how they had 4 carriers but not a single one flew cap could have saved more of the ships as well if the escort had better anti-aircraft defence
the ship was pritty run down but as always the USA never gave fks and kept on sailing
With the greatest respect no U.S sailors were on it. The Brave Canadians sailed it there, even quoted my the captain" I am gona bring this ship in".
@@MyScubasteve The American crew was ordered off the Ohio. They did not want to leave and would have sailed the ship to hell if they had to.
