    Thanks for the rubber cement tip. Still prepping. My 10yo daughter is joining me also, and she wants to shoot film too. Will try to share both of our notebooks soon.

    Also, the rubber cement smells, looks, and works very similar to the adhesive my father uses in his shoe shop. It brought back childhood memories of my time at my father's shoe shop. Also, it brought back a more recent memory of an accident that happened when the adhesive caught fire and nearly burned the shop down!

    I really needed this video today, thanks Ted! I've always made photo books with my work through out the year, but those are expensive and I have to wait 12 months to see it. Journals are a fantastic idea - they're so raw but useful.

    Started putting mine together and I found the problem with viewing on the computer screen as opposed to being on paper was that on paper the images seemed darker. I am going to have to brighten them more for printing. I also noticed the dangers of too much processing, as one HDR picture that looks great on my computer looks too "digital" (for lack of a better word) on paper, and just looks off. Overall pleased though.

    This may end up ultimately being a mistake, but I think for starting out I am going to write notes/ideas/thoughts in "Notes" in my iPad, I take the iPad with me everywhere especially with the camera and drone anyway, so the journal with be handy all the time. Plus all of my camera and drone videos/photos I place into the iPad also, convenient.

    Thanks for the examples of the journals. I'm doing it loose leaf so I can sort the images, insert additional images adjacent to images from earlier in the project. I guess that I'm going to try to post photos on F'book and see if they get any interest; rather than taking a photo of the journal pages to post -- viewers might not see the images in the photo very well. I'm doing portraits as the theme, and taking about 5-10 images from each portrait shoot. I see that's a little different from the approach others are taking; so would appreciate thoughts about how well I'm adhering to the assignment.

    This is a great idea. Touching/holding prints is such a different experience to any format on screen. Questions... Do you have any issues with your photos sticking to each other? Do you make prints at home with a printer or from a lab/photo center?

    Ted, I see you using a moleskin type notebook. I may be dumb but having tried this once only to see the book impossible to close with the extra thickness of glue and photo paper after only getting 1/3 of the way thru it... I don't know how it's done. I notice others using ring binder notebooks. Seems worth recommending because a fixed binding is impossible to see thru the process. Otherwise it's nice to see you setting an example. And the rubber cement is a great idea albeit extra thickness :-)

    Speaking of "seeing images on screen", do you have any episode about what computer (or monitor) to use when it comes to editing digital images? I see you have a Mac, which is pretty much straight forward what most illustrators use but is there an alternative? (especially a budget alternative)

    I've been meaning to get into the assignments but since I am working with film only these days I can't get myself to do it because somehow it feels like those frames could be used for something more worthwhile??? I know it's silly to think that way, but I can't really help it... I should really force myself to do it this week, load up a roll of the cheapest film I have and just shoot some variations on stuff.

  • @carlsalomone6932
    @carlsalomone6932 7 лет назад

    I guess there is no hard and fast rule but my question is:
    Should I include all 10 variations (including those that just didn't work) in the journal?
    Or just put the images I like.

    Am still confused on how to post to social media. Created a Tumblr Account. Have a Facebook account, but am not sure how to post my images onto either, even with hashtag #photoassignments without everybody in the world looking at stuff that might not mean anything to them.
    Can I suggest you post (in writing with your next Assignment Post) instructions on how to do that...just to make some of the non-social media folks more comfortable.
    Thanks.

    Try using a really old film camera with a fuzzy, filthy viewing screen, you get great compositions because you can't see enough to be distracted by the details.

    Hey Ted,
    Thanks for the videos. I like the idea of this assignment and will probably lurk along with the videos but havnt decided if ill be in on the social component.
    That aside do you have any tips for marking on images? A million years ago when I was doing my yearbook we worked with some kind of fat based marking crayon to set crop marks when making the layout. I can't find much info online and would like to be able to mark on my prints but ink is not really going to work well.

    This assignment was such a great Idea.I remember Ted telling in the last video about choosing the current scene where I was and shooting around it. So, that's what I did. I shot around my room with my phone.I couldn't manage to do the sketchbook,though so I made a tumblr with those photos.But I did try to keep the essence of the assignment,so I modified the theme to display images with smaller size and large white margin areas. By the way,this is the tumblr ubspov.tumblr.com/

    Thank you for your great channel! I got really excited about these assignments! Quick question: I was trying to achieve the assignment with still life, varying light, composition, etc. and I ended up with more than 200 photographs. It would be a little too exhaustive to print all of them and paste them into my notebook. Should I just pick the 10-15 best out of them and print them? In this case I feel it would defeat the purpose of making mistakes and noting them in a notebook. Please let me know your thoughts! :)

    • @majopgalli
      @majopgalli 7 лет назад

      Hi Jonathan, I hope it helps. On the last Photo Assignment Ted mention that the amount of photographs should be around 10 or 15 aprox. So part of our work would be also the selection process. Still, the pint here is to allow ourselves to make mistakes (seeing them visually) and learn from them =)

      @hillsudi5194 7 лет назад +1

      The assignment is to pick one subject and make a picture of it ten different ways or different variations. It maybe at different time of the day or different techniques or lighting. I believe it is aimed at taking you off your normal way of photographing a scene, kind of taking you off your comfort zone to thinking outside the box. At the end you may have some great photo and not so great but you will have to print your photos , get a journal and keep them for reference and to better understand what you could have done better or not to have done to give you a good picture.
