I have one sitting here by my computer that my grandmother and I made over 40 years ago using a similar method. We used a soup can and filed the rough edge where the top lid had been removed. We used a knitting needle the same diameter as the vinyl clothesline to make tubes, attached them, and sprayed them with polyurethane. The clothesline insets are made like yours except there is only one in each. They're inserted to overlap every other one like yours does. Fun project! Thanks for sharing!
Awwwww thanks for the wonderful memory. My dad and I use to make these when I was a little girl back in the 70's for Senior Centers. Not that they are hard to make but they're much easier to make now. In the 70's we didn't have glue sticks or the hot glue gun we used bottles of Elmer's. What a great way to recycle my old Martha magazines. Thanks :o)
I made these for gifts when I was in nursing school back in the 70's. I made trashcans, The only mistake I made was not making one for myself. Glad I saw your video! Making one for me now, a few years late. lol Thanks for the great video!
I remember my grandmother, who was a consummate crafter, making the trash cans and teaching her grandkids -- much like your memory. They were identical to yours with the plastic clothes line, though not as fancy as yours. I never forgot how to make and recently making them again. I like to spray paint mine either with color or clear. I had one that lasted about 20 years and survived a couple moves.
At last! A well produced video! Good project, well explained, appropriately filmed, in an attractive environment, and NO distractions. A joy to watch. YAY!!
Thanks for the inspiration! I found a long and low cardboard box and used it to make a planter. I get so many compliments on it at work. So colorful and cheery. I lined it with a plastic bag and put a coat of mod podge on the outside to seal it. I watched a few movies while rolling all the pages. :0)
Thanks for sharing your wonderful crafts ideas. I always have magazines I throw away. Now, I can use some of them for cute projects. I like the idea too because I can make things after the holiday as well. Plus, using the magazines help me recycle and affordable.
I remember yearsssss ago using the 5 gallon ice cream container, they make wonderful containers for papers/dry goods. I also hve been making some using old nautical maps and rope for the cording, I also have anchor charms that I hot clue on the front, looks so great in a nautical room.
Elena, I'm so happy that you enjoyed making this craft. I love-love this craft too. I'd love to see a video response showing off your projects! Thanks again for the comment.
Love this idea! Always throwing out magazines and catalogs. Thanks for the inspiration, I am always looking for ways to re-purpose and recycle as I love to do lots of crafting myself.
Thanks for this really great tutorial. I'm going to create some of these things with my great neice next holidays, she just seven years old and I know she loves making crafty stuff.
very good I have been saving some container I did not know what to do with great idea, also I was thinking to use them for Christmas to put extra forks on the tables when using paper plates thanks for sharing
Absolutley stunning. My teenage cousin has absolutley fallen in love with this idea!!! Thank you so much for this innovative and inexpesive tutorial!!!! No doubt I will try this :)
Awesome! i watched this yesterday and made one today. so pretty perfect for my room but instead of cutting off the ends at the top i just leave it that way. kinda cute, looks like sun rays
My husband and I are working on an online craft program with our business partner. We plan on going live with the show in 2013. It will be a lot of fun and gobs of crafts. You just can't rely on the networks to stay with anything when it comes to craft shows. Gotta "Do It Yourself"! :) Thank you for the nice comment.
Thanks for sharing this video Pattie. I am starting to craft again. I got the bug during the holidays while I was recovering from bronchitis and I was going stair crazy in the house. Thanks again.
Rita, that is really fantastic for you to get the crafting bug. And they say it's a wonderful way to heal, mend and revigorate your creativity. Crafting is good for us!
Incredible what you can do with used magazines. Looks really cool and filmed so brilliantly and easy to follow clear instructions. The best video I have watched. Well done
Not a problem, it's just so hard to stay up with all the videos, my blog, facebook page, and life in general. Thanks again for being a watcher and crafter.
this was really helpful i actually kindoff hate craft but after seeig this iam inspired very easy ways and very very easy to grasp is it that people from Oklahoma are always inspiring
I did a few of these with the large juice cans. I made one this pass week with the coffee can to use as a remote container. there are so many of them. the paper I used on the coffee can is from calendars. they are stronger and very colorful. thanks.
Hola, que precioso quedó esa decoración con papel eso es extraordinario muy lindo, tiene bastante importancia que el papel tenga colores, le quedó muy lindoooooooooooooo. Saludos desde Chile.
Try rolling up the magazine pages with a long aluminum knitting needle. Unlike the pencil, the knitting needle shouldnt disappear, and the magazine easily slides off the metal. :-)
Thank you so much for this tutorial :) I mostly make crafts from Duct Tape and I love it, but I love to explore and try new things. This would make a great gift idea for the holidays!
I love things like this, might I suggest adding the words, upcycle/ recycle to your tags. T These would make great standby gift holders/ extra gift. for example, add stationary to a pencil holder or wastepaper sized one for a toddler, child or even teen. Add homemade easter goodies and a ribbon handle to make a reuseable basket, add samples of beauty products and homemade vouchers as a mothers day pamper pack... add baby products/ clothes for new arrivals, etc etc.
Hi ChaceBowz, Sorry I'm just getting back to you but I've been staying busy at the Craft & Hobby Association trade show in Chicago. If I remember correctly I used a coffee can from Trader Joes for the larger project. The can is actually made of the same light cardboard as those Pillsbury Poppin' Fresh dough biscuits and crescent rolls but only bigger. Take a look at the chip/snack isle at your local grocery store-cheese puffs or another chip/snack like Pringles but bigger. Or go to Trader Joes.

That edging is very clever! I think it gives it a more grown up look. Thanks!
